    Review & Installation Video

Hey everyone. Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my review of the Ford Racing by Borla Touring axle-back exhaust system, fitting your 2015 and up Fastback GT. This is one of the two offerings from Ford Racing by Borla for your S550 GT, and this is going to be the milder option of the two, with the Ford Racing by Borla Sport being a little bit louder. While this is one of the milder options that's on the market for the 2015 and up, what I really like about this axle-back is the deepness of the tone. This axle-back doesn't get raspy in the higher RPMs, like some of the other options tend to, and that's a really good thing, in my opinion. But it really all depends on what you're looking for. This system gives more of that classic muscle car sound, and it will still no doubt turn heads. So on a scale of one to five, with five being your neighbors are constantly complaining every time you drive by, I would give the Ford Racing by Borla Touring a strong two in terms of overall loudness, and especially since, with the axle-back, you're keeping your factory resonator. This is definitely not the loudest system out there, but it is one of the best sounding in my opinion. It has a really nice pitch to it, making it sound more aggressive and powerful to me, and it's not as obnoxious from the inside of the car, either. If you're going for straight up volume, then American Muscle does have all other options on the site for you, such as the Borla ATAK. This system does feature two and a half inch stainless steel tubing, which is perfect for daily drivers and lightly modified street cars. Obviously, Ford Racing and Borla are legendary for their quality, and as such, they're at a premium with their price point. Now, they're not the highest priced out there, but we all know that if you want a quality product, you have to pay for it. And with the sound of your Mustang being one of the most important aspects of the car, I tend to lean towards buying quality here, personally. When it comes to the install, I'm going to call this a two out of three wrenches on the scale, solely due to the cutting that we all know is required with the install of a 2015 axle-back. But don't let this scare you away from this system. You just need to have a fresh Sawzall blade and some eye protection, and the patience to measure what it will be cutting. The axle-back should bolt up in an hour or two, tops. I really like the Ford Racing by Borla Touring axle-back, and while it has a higher price point, it's totally worth it, especially when you remember that you're getting the build and quality that comes along with names like Borla and Ford Racing. Be sure to check out a system for your S550 right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

is there any increase in horsepower with axel back or cat back systems?

I just purchased a 2016 GT and I would like a little rumble but not a loud exhaust as I'm getting older and plan to travel with this car. Would this be very loud if I keep the rest of the system stock. Thanks for your input.

    • Due to the touring style mufflers that come with this Ford Performance by Borla Touring Axle-Back Exhaust system, it will definitely give your '16 GT a powerful exhaust tone, without being too much louder than the stock exhaust.

Hi guys!! In the exhaust loudness meter you said that is a 2-3, my question is, if i install an X pipe how hight in the scale will it go? Thank you in advance.

    Armandito

    • If installing a catted X-Pipe with the M-4204-F318C, the exhaust note will increase slightly in volume, but with a much more aggressive tone. If installing an off road X-Pipe, the exhaust will be significantly louder. Unfortunately the scale is a bit subjective, but with the off road x this would be a solid 4/5 and with the catted x or a cut and clamp x, this would be a nice solid 3/5

      Not impressed

Turned out not much different from the stock exhaust. Was easy to install but the end result was somewhat disappointing.

      Nice exhaust

Very impressed with the fit and finish! I wish it had a little more rumble at idle but very happy with the sound going through the gears and I like the fact that it’s not much loader than stock at 65 mph. No drone at all. I’m very happy with my choice buying this axle back exhaust.

      Ford Performance Touring Axle Back

Well I originally had the Corsa Sport cat back system, the system was just to raspy and loud, so I purchased the Ford Performance Touring Axle Back and paired it with Corsa's 3 inch X Pipe and it tamed the system down, no more raspy and loud exhaust. It now has a tame start up, and awesome classic car rumble, but when you hit the gas, that Corsa X Pipe takes over, love it.

      Just loud enough

I really like the Ford Performance Touring Axle Backs. I wanted a growl you don't get from the stock set up. I did a lot of research online and decided on these. They fit what I wanted perfectly. As a senior, who is almost 70, I am able to choose which neighbours I wake up. Not just everyone. Overall I am completely happy with the sound and the quality.

      Awesome Sound

I've tried a few other exhaust systems on my 2015 Mustang GT but this Borla Ford Racing Touring exhaust has the best sound without being overpowering. I usually have satellite radio cranked up but for the last 2 weeks it's all about the exhaust notes. What can I say about American Muscle...they have great detailed videos, they had the product in stock and even though I live in Canada I still had my new Borla delivered in a few days. Thanks guys.

      Muffler Swap Dilemma

Replacing the mufflers on a brand new Mustang seemed a bit foolish. The factory sound was okay but it just didn't match the looks of the car. For me, as a child of the '60s, I wanted that rumble I remembered and the Ford Performance by Borla exhaust was, for me, the perfect choice. A deep, classic note through all of the gears but not so loud as to upset the neighbors. Another plus is that there is no interior drone in fifth or sixth gear so I can still enloy my tunes. To tell the truth, I rarely have the windows up since the install. I was not equipped to do the install myself but my Ford dealer had it done in less than 1 1/2 hours and the fit was perfect. As to the finish, the more flared exhaust tips of these mufflers look more aggressive than the factory tips and have a bright chrome finish. For me, these Touring mufflers were the right choice.

      Just Right....

I have a 50th Anniversary Convertible. I didn't want something obnoxiously loud with the top down, and the reviews pointed me to this exhaust. I didn't delete the resonator; figured I could later if I wanted. This exhaust does not make the car stupid loud. The rumble at idle is deeper, and when you stomp on it it growls. At normal speed, this is barely louder than factory. I'm happy with it- while I could've tolerated a bit more volume, it sounds good. I've also noticed a bit more pep, especially in sport mode. Pretty amazed at the difference made by this one simple change. I had it installed at my local dealer- thanks Champion Ford Reo. They knocked it out in under an hour and only charged me $65. Can't beat it.

      amazing quality

Ive run a many exhaust systems on various applications and this one is by far the most impressive to me. Very easy straight forward install and an amazing exhaust note with zero drone, won't irritate anybody, but still has that deep tone your looking for. Cops won't bother you and when you step on the throttle it really opens her up. Only slightly louder than stock. The biggest pro is you won't lose any torque.

      Perrrrrrrfect

Was worried that they would be too loud or have too much drone in a rag top, but no ,not the case. Makes it sounds just right when it's time to use that long pedal on the right. Combined with a tune kit and IMHO you have a perfect everydayrunner/toy. Couldn't be happier and I'm from the era when the true muscle cars were built . Brings back the wild child in me and forces me to leave my cane at home. Tee Hee!!!

Great choice for a convertible GT

Wanted more 'muscle car' growl than the stock GT exhaust. Installed on a 2016 GT convertible / California Special. Was concerned about getting too much sound for a convertible, and based upon reviews, this seemed to be a good choice. Now that it is installed, it was a great call. Slightly more beef and growl on start-up; definitely more muscle WOT. Would recommend to anyone wanting more than stock, but not wanting to wake the neighbors. I have a ROUSH supercharger and intercooler installed, and now I have sound that is better aligned with a car that dynos at 700 HP. Better appearance than stock as well.

      Nice and Deep

A lot deeper tone than stock. Very musclecar sounding with no drone at all. Also, not very much louder than stock, but then again its 50-state legal so you can't complain too much. Easy install, make sure you have a sawzall with a metal blade and a ratchet with a 15mm socket. 15-20 minutes, max. Happy with the purchase, although if it was just a touch louder I wouldn't complain.

      Wanted a little more sound

These add a good tone, but from in the car is about the same sound level as stock noise wise. Barely a noticeable change. I didn't want roudy, but I wanted a little more. Probably will add x-pipe to eliminate stock resonator for more sound.

Upgraded to these mufflers on my 2016 GT. Great sound while keeping the interior noise level roughly the same as stock. The car should really come with these from the factory. Love the sound at WOT.

      Quality

The quality is top shelf. Love the tips. Sounds great just a little louder than I had hoped for. At normal throttle they are bearly louder than stock. Idle has a muscle car sound. The engine revs easy now . Would do it again but leave the resonator on.

Touring Axle-Back Ford Racing by Borla

This exhaust really should be the factory stock equipped mufflers. The sound is lower/throatier/deeper and I estimate 25 louder over stock. No drone. They look much nicer and the 4" tips fill out the back muffler openings better. Excellent chrome finish. Very pleased. Kept the stock resonator.

      Ford racing touring axle back

I had the same system on my '13 GTCS and was looking for the same sound for my new '16 GT Conv. I saw information that Borla mufflers would not fit a convertible but this was not the case. There is a bend in the factory pipe near where you need to cut that prevents the exhaust tips from being perfectly centered in the bumper cut outs but it hardly noticeable. They have a mellow sound which I prefer. Install was about an hour with most of that time making sure the cut was in the correct spot. Unfortunately after I did the install a person with a medical issue smashed into the back of my car so I don't have any long term reviews. The car only has around 600 miles on it.
