Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my complete breakdown and dyno test of the KNN Series 63 air charger intake, available for your 11'-14' Coyote powered GT. KNN is without a doubt one of the largest names in the automotive after market industry, and for good reason. They pretty much invented the modern day cotton reusable air filter back in the 60s, and have been innovating the market ever since. Now, if you guys want to check out more stuff from KNN for your Mustang, and you're not already watching this video on our site, well then just click the link below to head back to AmericanMuscle.com. Now, right off the bat, I can tell you that the KNN Series 63 intake is gonna be one of the more visually pleasing intakes available for your GT, just judging by this all black stealthy construction which looks very tough. Now my favorite part is definitely the carbon fiber intake cover here. Nothing too flashy, just a really tough looking intake, and it's gonna look even better under the hood. Now don't take my word for it, you can always check out some of the customers submitted images located on the product page. But of course looks aside, the main purpose of a cold air intake like the KNN here is to make power. Just how much power can you expect? Well, we're gonna find out in a minute, but first let's break down some of the finer details. The KNN is a no tune required intake, thanks to the size of the map housing, which does give you the luxury of running the Series 63 either with or without an aftermarket custom tune, and still pick up some power. Now the intake does include the molded plastic intake tube itself, the plastic air-box here, that rather attractive carbon fiber cover I mentioned a little earlier, which you can run with or without the intake, the oiled high flow filter, and then finally all the couplers and hardware needed for the installation. Speaking of the installation, getting the KNN bolted up to your Coyote is a very straight forward task that should take you no more than an hour in the driveway using basic hand tools. Now of course we always try to include detailed instructions on the product page in addition to the manufacturers included installation instructions. But by now guys, you should know the deal. You should get a little jammed up, do not hesitate to reach out to our award winning team of Mustang experts. They're always standing by, ready to help a fellow Mustang owner in need. We already grabbed our base line run using our 6-speed GT behind me, so now with the KNN installed, it's time to get down to business. Now even though this intake is a no tune required intake, we're still gonna take this opportunity to upload the custom Bama V2 tune, to really maximize our gains. In addition to optimizing out cam and spark timing, the tune is also gonna make adjustments to our rev and speed limiters, our drive by wire calibrations, and ultimately perfect those air / fuel ratios to maximize our power. So with everything installed, let's see how the KNN performs. Our baseline run using our manual 2012 GT gave us 370 horse power, and 357 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels. With a KNN Bama combination, the car is now making 380 horse power, and 362 pound feet of torque, giving us a peak gain of 10 horse power over those base line numbers, and gains of as much as 10 horse power, and 5 pound feet of torque throughout the curve. The KNN Series 63 intake is one of those intakes that will perform great and look good while doing so. With a name like KNN, you know the quality will go unquestioned. So if you want to check out a KNN intake for your ride, be sure to find it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Improves Horsepower And Torque. The K&N Series 63 AirCharger High Performance Cold Air Intake completely replaces your Coyote powered GT Mustangs restrictive factory air box and paper filter element with a high flow K&N filter assembly and a free-flowing polyethylene intake tube for a noticeable increase in horsepower and acceleration all while still providing excellent filtration. Power gains of 10 horsepower and 5 torque have been seen at the rear wheels.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Cold Air Intakes on the market for the 5.0L V8 Mustangs this K&N Series 63 CAI does not require a computer re-tune. The engineers at K&N really did their homework to improve your pony's power using the factory tune.

Filters out harmful contaminants. The supplied K&N Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with it's unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Washable, Reusable Filter. K&N designed their high flow air filters to be reusable. That means there is no need to buy a new filter every few thousand miles, you can just clean the filter, re-oil it, and save money with a K&N Filter Recharge Kit.

Straight Forward Installation. The K&N Series 63 Aircharger Cold Air Intake Kit is designed to install easily with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for proper installation. All necessary parts and instructions are included.

Application. This K&N Series 63 Aircharger Cold Air Intake kit is specially designed to fit the 2011 to 2014 GT Mustang's equipped with the Coyote 5.0L DOHC V8 engine. No computer retuning required.

Technical Note. This K&N Cold Air Intake is not legal for use in California or other states adopting California emission standards.

it seems that the engine cover cant be put back on with this CAI option (2013 mustang GT) ??? total deal breaker, why would this not be mentioned in the video (which I missed showing no engine cover for some reason) or by anyone else who bought this ???

MPUKR9DJSOCR

  • Actually I have an Automatic, and the engine cover fit just fine. 2013 GT. Seems that all those who have said this will not fit with the engine cover on a 2013 are mistaken.

Will this work with the Boss 302 intake manifold?

Corey

  • No you must purchase two items from the Boss 302 category in order for the Boss 302 intake manifold to be sufficient: 1. Boss 302 Throttle Body 2. Boss 302 Cold Air Kit

I have heard from a few different people that the oil from the k n filter will through a check engine code has anyone had this happen?

Austin

  • I just installed this on my 14' and have not had any issues. I have always installed K N on my Mustangs, I believe the person who told you that is telling tall tales.

Heat shield question Would there be any significant difference in running with the top cover on versus running with it off?

JoePerryIV

  • Sometimes heavy rain will get into the engine bay via the heat extractors on the hood, the air intake is right underneath so it's a good idea to leave it on IMO.

Must have for 13' 14' GT owners!

*** If you own a 13' or 14' GT you need to purchase this but only if you plan on keeping the stock hood. The vents on the side allow water to run off directly into the filter of most cold air kits creating problems for your motor. *** First thing's first. I opened the box to find all of the hardware loose in the box and I was missing quite a few washers. Luckily I had some spare parts around the house. Other than the missing hardware the install was a breeze. And very straightforward. I definitely noticed an increase in throttle response. As far as a noticeable boost to HP I did not feel a difference in power. I am going to add Borla S-type, JBA ORHP and a few personal tune's from one of AM's original tuners (Mike).

    Great part, Easy install

I bought this intake because the the Great reputation KandN has through out the automotive industry. instructions were very detailed and the removal of the old intake and installation of the new cold air took about an hour total. I installed it with a Bama 91 octane tune. went for a test drive after and you can feel the power gain and the car sounds great. they get rid of the factory sound tube but you don't need it, you can still hear the intake with this.

Won't tune on SCT X4 tuner.

There is a big difference between "doesn't require a tune" and "can't be tune period". There is no parameters for this particular model of cold air intake(CAI). If you want to tune your car then don't get this model of CAI at all. You'll end up with a really nice engine accent. It looks nice, it fits but it will not give you the performance or race HP/Torque it boasts cause you can't tune it. The modular tube is the same size as the stock CAI and the air volumes are the same. Meaning the air sensors "senses" the same amount of air being drawn. The computer doesn't know the difference between the two. So the only way it works is to keep the CAI at stock. Which doesn't do anything. If I would have known this from the start I wouldn't have bought this CAI. I highly recommend something else if you want give your pony more power.

    Looks good

It looks great, but as far as the "estimated" HP gains, I don't think it even gives you 5 RWHP. But it looks sweet, and it sounds great. Although I did notice it shakes quite a bit at WOT. And it ended up shaking out 3 of the bolts that hold down the carbon fiber lid. That's about the only negatives I can say about it.

    my recent purchase.

I'm very pleased with my filter along with other things I purchased from American muscle. This filter looks good and matches the look I'm after. When my hood is open it screams performance and great air flow. Mashing the throttle gives my mustang a happy sound.

    Looks Great!

This is a great CAI for the 2014 gt cause the hood vents, after reading a lot and doing homework apparently other CAIs with open houses aren't good for that style hood cause when it rains it will get your filter wet and stall you out. But with this one it's all enclosed with a carbon fiber top which I think looks great! I would recommend this CAI with a vented hood!

Very good product for price, easy to install

This shipped quickly as always, and free of course thanks to AM's great policy. The instructions included were EXTREMELY good, with pictures and proper explanation for each step. Took longer to get the old intake out than to get this one in. Two hours total, and I never even do stuff like this. As for performance gain.. nothing massive if I'm really honest. But considering I have a stock TB, and (at the time) didn't have a tune, it actually wasn't too bad. Definitely gave a little boost, just don't expect it to make your car a different animal. I took the cover off (since I have a 2012 and don't have to worry as much about water getting on the filter) and unleashed this angry hissing sound that I absolutely LOVE. Now that I have a tune, I may eventually switch, HOWEVER, this product is GREAT for those who do not have a tuner/cannot get tunes. Plus, its from KandN, so quality is excellent. Looks great under the hood, especially if you leave the cover on. It also helped me gain 1-2 MPG with daily driving, so in the long run this would theoretically pay for itself! Don't hesitate, unless you're planning on getting a tune, this is probably the best CAI all things considered, ESPECIALLY if you have a 13-14 with the heat extractors, since this will definitely keep out any water.

    Naomi got an upgrade

This is not my first rodeo but it is the biggest single gain I have ever bolted on. Fit and finish were great and the instructions were so clear even my kids could have gotten it right. The crank case vent hose was a little snug but that was easy to remedy. During the first test drive my wife said that the car is now dangerous. My Black Beauty is now a Crusher.

Overall good product, just be careful of the plastic plugs when you are installing it onto the intake tube. I gained 15RWHP and 16 Torque overall in low to high end rpms.

Looks great, adds sound, not much HP gain though

The CAI came in exactly when it was quoted so big plus to AM for that. The install would have only taken 20 mins (Had 3 people working on it) but where you plug the sensor into the new slot... the holes for the screws didn't match up exactly so I had to cut it slightly wider (about 1/16 of an inch, left no gap between the sensor and housing though) so I could actually screw it in, wasn't thrilled with having to do that to something that was designed to fit. I have noticed a sound increase with my engine, you can hear the air getting sucked through the filter which is awesome, my MPG dropped some, probably because of my lead foot. As far as horse power.. if there is any gain it is barely noticeable, if I ran a tune with it I'm sure it would help but the point of getting this was to not have to tune it right now. I've had this for a month so this isnt a "knee - jerk" reaction. I'm not upset that I bought this, I just think there are better options out there for what you're going to spend.

    The Only Way to Go

I bought the KandN unit because of the reputation and longevity of the company. I have been thoroughly impressed by the performance gains with and without a BAMA tune. There was a small issue that was resolved but the pvc outlet to the crank is plastic and when installing it, it broke in two. AM sent me a whole new unit and the next one went on with no trouble.

    Cold air install

It took me and a friend about a half hour to install. I notice the major power increase after 2800 RPM. I have the Roush axle backs and I thought it sounded good before this intake........now it's just nasty! Noticeable power increase between 3 and 6 RPM. WELL worth the money. I have the Cervini ram air hood so this is perfect. I don't have to worry about driving in the rain since the filter is covered.

    Runs great; poor install

This cold air intake live up to all expectations for performance gain and throttle response. Installation became a little frustrating. K & N supplied a 1/2 inch hose to replace the factory crankcase vent line which did not work. Both ends were 5/8 inch (after you removed the factory line and got to the stub connector).. I called K & N and they air freighted a 5/8 inch hose that arrived the next day and I was able to complete the install. The Customer Service person promised to do a "fitment test" on my car and correct the parts/instruction issues. Lesson learned is not to be the first purchaser if there are no other reviewers.
