    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with americanmuscle.com, here with an overview and install of the Roush Heat Extractors for the 2015 and newer GT Mustang. In this video we're gonna be talking about a few different things with these heat extractors. We'll talk about the materials and construction [00:00:15] and the install. I'll get more into the install later, but there is a little bit of drilling that you have to do, but I'm still gonna call this one a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. The Roush Heat Extractors are gonna be something that you're gonna wanna check out if you're looking for a small way to change the stock [00:00:30] look of the car. You don't always have to completely change or swap parts to create a different type of look, especially if you're looking to do something subtle, and the Roush Heat Extractors are a perfect example of that. These hood vents are designed to be fully functional, but I can tell you that aren't gonna be seeing or noticing [00:00:45] big differences here. I'd say that these are more for styling than anything else, but that isn't a bad thing. These do come with the raw black that you see here, and they're made from ABS plastic. That means that you can paint-match them if you want, or if you like the contrasting look, you can always just [00:01:00] install them as is. The finish is nice enough that you can just unbox them and install, and they are a clean matte black. A lot of exterior parts are made from ABS plastic and that's because it's lightweight, strong, and durable. It's gonna hold up over time against heat and cold and the sun. So, don't be [00:01:15] thrown off by the materials and the fact that these are lightweight. ABS also has impact resistance and when it's prepped properly, it paints really well. These are gonna come with everything you'll need to complete the install. So, you'll get the heat extractors, themselves, some hardware, just a few screws, [00:01:30] a piece of foam, and templates for your drilling to make the install easier. And don't worry, we'll go over the install more in a second. When it comes to price, you can expect to spend between $150 and $200 for a set of these. Now, you do have a few options when it comes to other hood vent options. [00:01:45] Or you could always go the route of a new hood or a hood scoop if you're looking to differentiate your car, but I will say that these are one of the least expensive options that are currently out there right now. As for the install, you're looking at a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, even though you do have to do a little bit of drilling for these. [00:02:00] You're gonna expect to have this finished in an hour or two tops and if you're planning on getting these painted, I'd just make sure that you test fit them first. You're gonna need a few basic tools and a drill, of course. The hood blanket will need to come off and there are a few pieces of hardware to get the stock vents out of the way. [00:02:15] You use the drill template to drill two holes on each side of the hood. I would just seal these holes after you drill them, so you don't have any rust issues. Then your foam's gonna go right into place. The Roush Heat Extractors clip into the factory slots and then screw into place. Next you can reinstall the [00:02:30] factory plastic piece and the factory hood blanket too. And that's all it's gonna take to get these installed. Wrapping things up here with the Roush Heat Extractors, these are hood vents that are gonna give your Mustang a subtle change in appearance. They're made from ABS plastic. They ship to you matte black, but they are [00:02:45] paintable and they have a great fit. You can check them out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

I have an open (no top cover) Ford Performance air intake. If I install these, will water when it rains or I wash my car drip down through the heat extractor openings and get water in my intake, thus potentially hurting my engine? Thanks for your time!

    • Hello! Under most circumstances you shouldn't encounter any issues with water entering the heat extractors. At least not a significant enough amount to cause any harm under the hood. However, If it is a torrential downpour, or you hit a large puddle of water on the roadway, then I can see how it could be cause for some concern. With that said, there aren't any accessory devices to block off the heat extractors. Ford did use heat extractors as a factory option on some mustang models, and these did not have a block off function either. Therefore, I feel it is safe to say that any cause for concern is minimal. Lastly, factory models did come equipped with an enclosed air-box which will keep the filter completely safe from any moister. If switching to an enclosed filter is not a feasible option, I would recommend finding an alternative way to block off (at least the driver side) heat exactor in adverse weather conditions.

Can you retain the turn signals using these heat extractors?

    • With the amount of modification that will be done for the installation of the Roush Heat Extractors the factory turn signals that are mounted in the factory scoops will not be a direct fit. You will either not be able to use them anymore or you will have to slightly modify the Roush Heat Extractors to make it work.

Will these heat extractors fit on a 2017 Ecobost? Or Just the Gt? If not, what’s the difference causing them not too?

    • The heat extractors are designed to replace the vents already equipped on the 15-17 GT models. Unfortunately the EcoBoost models do not come with the vents from the factory.

How would you go about painting these? Since they are textured plastic I'm not sure a cost of glossy paint would show up well.

    • The Roush Heat Extractors will require prep work including minor sanding before being primed and painted. These will have a smoother finish, and will not be textured.

Do I really need to drill the holes in the hood because listening to a couple of your reviews they thought that the screws weren't needed and really hindered the progress of the project, because if I don't need to drill in my hood that would be good.

    • You will need to drill into the hood in order to have a proper installation of the heat extractors. The template and hardware you will need are supplied in this kit. if you follow the link below, it will take you to the installation guide. http://1.cdn.lib.americanmuscle.com/files/387049-manu.pdf

      Very Good Addition

The fit and finish of the Extractors is great. The template for drilling the two screw mounting holes is a joke, however. Either create a better, more foolproof method of hole location or completely redesign the mounting method for the rear of the product. A steel strap across the rear underside of the hood vent hole and retained by screws or friction would be far better. Other than that, the Extractors look far better than the stock vents.

Easy to install, looks great! Template for drilling isn’t great, recommend using nail polish on the Roush part for guide.

Very simple to install and looks more aggressive than the stick heat extractors. Definitely worth it.

      defected

upon opening the package, I noticed one of the heat extractors having 3 blemishes on them. When I looked at the other one, I noticed the same marks in the exact same spot as the other one. I figured it was a factory defect in the paint/mold. I called AM and sent them back in exchange for another set. Same thing, the blemishes were in the same spots as the last set. Sent them back as well. These were very noticeable defects in the matte finish. I would have kept them if I was going to have them painted, but I was going to install them as is. Both sets had a sticker on them that said 6/18/18.

Roush hood vents for 15-17 GT

Love these things, so much better looking than the boring stock ones, a great look that's more aggressive but looks factory, not tacked on. My car has the factory blackout package so they look like they belong even more. I haven't driven in a torrential downpour yet so can't speak to its water resistance but in normal rain everything stays dry. Install was a breeze, took about 20 minutes per side. I didn't bother with the additional 2 screws and drilling Roush recommends, the 2 bolts and snap in tabs they provide hold them in place just like Ford holds in their factory ones, they're not going anywhere. I did have to double side tape part of the driver's side one, one corner raised up slightly above the hood for some reason, that cured it and both sides sit totally flush now. Passenger side fit perfectly from the start. I think the factory metal snap in bracket on the drivers side may have bent slightly when I pulled the stock ones off, I don't think its an engineering/fit problem on Roush's end. All in all, a great, relatively inexpensive mod that's easy to install and will help your GT stand out from the crowd a bit more.

      BAD@$$!!!

These definitely add that aggressive look to the hood. I am not sure they work better than stock since the escape opening is much smaller but they look bad@$$!!! When installing put the two screw in place for the drill holes. Place nail polish at the end around the head of the screws. Position in placement cavity as you would installing and let them sit for a minute to allow the mail polish to transfer to hood. Remove and clean the nail polish from the screw and for the hood now you have accurate alignment to drill with 1/8 bit. No need to seal drill holes as I seen some people do on videos; the hood is aluminum :-)

The roush heat extractors really changed the look of the car. Install wasn’t to bad. The instructions that are on the roush website are really good at explaining what to do. I would highly recommend this product.

      Roush Heat Extractors

They look really good but have no practical value. The vent for the heat to escape is about the size of my little finger so it is of no real value other than looks. Also, if you put these on your Mustang, drape a sheet over the ENTIRE engine compartment before you start to prevent a nut or push pin from bouncing (somewhere) into the engine compartment.

      Best accent

These are great, the ugly factory vents were always a pet peeve of mine. These are one of my favorite additions, it says to drill you don’t have to I didn’t, Sita perfectly with just the clips. Great product.

      decent product

drilling template is not accurate, and not very clear on how to place it. I find roush does not have accurate templates on any of their products I've purchased so far. BUT... with that said, I'm happy with the overall results. i got the look i wanted. it won't remove any more heat compared to the OEM stuff, but i was in for style on this purchase. no regrets. took about an hour from start to finish.

      Looks good from 20 feet.

They look great from 20 feet away however, up close you can see imperfections in the mold. Also, the small strip on adhesive on the front tip does not stick very well. I'm going to have to remove them and put some 3m double sided tape to keep the tips from sticking up. Kinda surprised coming from Roush.
