Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with americanmuscle.com, here with an overview and install of the Roush Heat Extractors for the 2015 and newer GT Mustang. In this video we're gonna be talking about a few different things with these heat extractors. We'll talk about the materials and construction [00:00:15] and the install. I'll get more into the install later, but there is a little bit of drilling that you have to do, but I'm still gonna call this one a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. The Roush Heat Extractors are gonna be something that you're gonna wanna check out if you're looking for a small way to change the stock [00:00:30] look of the car. You don't always have to completely change or swap parts to create a different type of look, especially if you're looking to do something subtle, and the Roush Heat Extractors are a perfect example of that. These hood vents are designed to be fully functional, but I can tell you that aren't gonna be seeing or noticing [00:00:45] big differences here. I'd say that these are more for styling than anything else, but that isn't a bad thing. These do come with the raw black that you see here, and they're made from ABS plastic. That means that you can paint-match them if you want, or if you like the contrasting look, you can always just [00:01:00] install them as is. The finish is nice enough that you can just unbox them and install, and they are a clean matte black. A lot of exterior parts are made from ABS plastic and that's because it's lightweight, strong, and durable. It's gonna hold up over time against heat and cold and the sun. So, don't be [00:01:15] thrown off by the materials and the fact that these are lightweight. ABS also has impact resistance and when it's prepped properly, it paints really well. These are gonna come with everything you'll need to complete the install. So, you'll get the heat extractors, themselves, some hardware, just a few screws, [00:01:30] a piece of foam, and templates for your drilling to make the install easier. And don't worry, we'll go over the install more in a second. When it comes to price, you can expect to spend between $150 and $200 for a set of these. Now, you do have a few options when it comes to other hood vent options. [00:01:45] Or you could always go the route of a new hood or a hood scoop if you're looking to differentiate your car, but I will say that these are one of the least expensive options that are currently out there right now. As for the install, you're looking at a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, even though you do have to do a little bit of drilling for these. [00:02:00] You're gonna expect to have this finished in an hour or two tops and if you're planning on getting these painted, I'd just make sure that you test fit them first. You're gonna need a few basic tools and a drill, of course. The hood blanket will need to come off and there are a few pieces of hardware to get the stock vents out of the way. [00:02:15] You use the drill template to drill two holes on each side of the hood. I would just seal these holes after you drill them, so you don't have any rust issues. Then your foam's gonna go right into place. The Roush Heat Extractors clip into the factory slots and then screw into place. Next you can reinstall the [00:02:30] factory plastic piece and the factory hood blanket too. And that's all it's gonna take to get these installed. Wrapping things up here with the Roush Heat Extractors, these are hood vents that are gonna give your Mustang a subtle change in appearance. They're made from ABS plastic. They ship to you matte black, but they are [00:02:45] paintable and they have a great fit. You can check them out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

I have an open (no top cover) Ford Performance air intake. If I install these, will water when it rains or I wash my car drip down through the heat extractor openings and get water in my intake, thus potentially hurting my engine? Thanks for your time!

MRyno58

  • Hello! Under most circumstances you shouldn't encounter any issues with water entering the heat extractors. At least not a significant enough amount to cause any harm under the hood. However, If it is a torrential downpour, or you hit a large puddle of water on the roadway, then I can see how it could be cause for some concern. With that said, there aren't any accessory devices to block off the heat extractors. Ford did use heat extractors as a factory option on some mustang models, and these did not have a block off function either. Therefore, I feel it is safe to say that any cause for concern is minimal. Lastly, factory models did come equipped with an enclosed air-box which will keep the filter completely safe from any moister. If switching to an enclosed filter is not a feasible option, I would recommend finding an alternative way to block off (at least the driver side) heat exactor in adverse weather conditions.

Do I really need to drill the holes in the hood because listening to a couple of your reviews they thought that the screws weren't needed and really hindered the progress of the project, because if I don't need to drill in my hood that would be good.

Chitown

  • You will need to drill into the hood in order to have a proper installation of the heat extractors. The template and hardware you will need are supplied in this kit. if you follow the link below, it will take you to the installation guide. http://1.cdn.lib.americanmuscle.com/files/387049-manu.pdf

Can you retain the turn signals using these heat extractors?

KEGT

  • With the amount of modification that will be done for the installation of the Roush Heat Extractors the factory turn signals that are mounted in the factory scoops will not be a direct fit. You will either not be able to use them anymore or you will have to slightly modify the Roush Heat Extractors to make it work.

Do you have instrucctions available? Does it require cutting the hood...? If so is the template provided?

Barricade

  • You do have drill holes in the hood and there is a template available online on where to drill the holes

    Fits poorly

I'm disappointed with the way these fit, they don't fit tightly to the hood leaving a gap. From a few feet back they look good and I like the look, but up close not very good.

    Great looks, questionable install

I installed these myself with little to no experience, took me about 45 min. While I really like the appearance the install leaves a lot to be desired, and the fit could be better. As another person mentioned DO NOT bother with the screws or drilling. The included screws are TINY and will do almost nothing to retain the heat extractors. I had to pry the clips off with a screwdriver to get them out, there's no way air is going to knock them loose. Also the factory retaining plate doesn't fit well with the foam blocks, for as much as this costs they could just throw in a correctly sized part. The overall fit is good, but leaves a small gap around the edges where water will come in. Again, for the price they could have put a rubber gasket around the edge for a better fit. Overall it's a good look, but not quite worth the money for what you get.

Installed these on my car in less than an hour. The instructions must be downloaded from the Roush website but they are well written. One thing to note if you have a 2016 with the hood mounted turn signals you must remove them as they will not fit. To me this wasnt a big deal because you can barely see them from in the car anyway.

    Look Awesome! Mickey Mouse Install!!!

Love how they look, but DO NOT bother with those idiotic screws...then you don't have to drill or print and cut out a worthless paper template. Really need to come up with a better way to locate the holes!!! Somewhat regretting my purchase!

    Roush hood extractors

The install was pretty simple and it looks awesome, the only problem I had was after you drill the 1/8 holes under hood the screws don't axactly match up so make sure you position the cut out pamphlets right on and take your time to do it right ,other than that it was real easy, it took me about a half hour.

These went on easily and fit was perfect. I wrapped mine in black carbon fiber vinyl which gives them a more exotic look. Pricey but still worth it for the looks.

    great item

They give the car a more aggressive look and there not hard to install. You will have to print out the diagram and tape it up so you can drill the 4 holes for the new mounting screws in the right places.

    Awesome aggressive look

These extractors set your hood apart. At first I thought about taking them to a paint and body shop to have them painted, but I'm glad I didn't because the matte black (molded black) looks amazing with the shadow black and the matte black chin spoiler, side skirt, and rear valance. The hardest part of the install was lining up the template which was below par in my opinion. Also, when you're spending $189 on a product you shouldn't have to download the installation manual and print it off.

    Roush Heat Extractors

As usual American Muscle delivered a great product in a very reasonable time frame. I actually received it a day sooner then expected. Install was fast and painless and added a great deal of head turning appeal to my GT. Well worth the price for a simple install that added to an already great looking car. As far as functionality goes, it should remove much more heat from the engine compartment then the stock heat extractor. You won't be disappointed if you purchase a set for your car.

Considering my car is all black, in my opinion these really added a better appearance to the stock hood, compared to what came with it stock as the matte black stands out from the shiny black paint. Best part is they're "functional" or I would not have done it just for a change of appearance. Note: when removing the stock heat extractors, they both have a wire connected to a bolt on the underside as a safety precaution to keep it from flying into the windshield. It's not necessary to reconnect it since these Roush heat extractors are bolted down in several locations instead so that's extra reassurance.
