    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with americanmuscle.com, here with an overview and install of the Roush Heat Extractors for the 2015 and newer GT Mustang. In this video we're gonna be talking about a few different things with these heat extractors. We'll talk about the materials and construction [00:00:15] and the install. I'll get more into the install later, but there is a little bit of drilling that you have to do, but I'm still gonna call this one a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. The Roush Heat Extractors are gonna be something that you're gonna wanna check out if you're looking for a small way to change the stock [00:00:30] look of the car. You don't always have to completely change or swap parts to create a different type of look, especially if you're looking to do something subtle, and the Roush Heat Extractors are a perfect example of that. These hood vents are designed to be fully functional, but I can tell you that aren't gonna be seeing or noticing [00:00:45] big differences here. I'd say that these are more for styling than anything else, but that isn't a bad thing. These do come with the raw black that you see here, and they're made from ABS plastic. That means that you can paint-match them if you want, or if you like the contrasting look, you can always just [00:01:00] install them as is. The finish is nice enough that you can just unbox them and install, and they are a clean matte black. A lot of exterior parts are made from ABS plastic and that's because it's lightweight, strong, and durable. It's gonna hold up over time against heat and cold and the sun. So, don't be [00:01:15] thrown off by the materials and the fact that these are lightweight. ABS also has impact resistance and when it's prepped properly, it paints really well. These are gonna come with everything you'll need to complete the install. So, you'll get the heat extractors, themselves, some hardware, just a few screws, [00:01:30] a piece of foam, and templates for your drilling to make the install easier. And don't worry, we'll go over the install more in a second. When it comes to price, you can expect to spend between $150 and $200 for a set of these. Now, you do have a few options when it comes to other hood vent options. [00:01:45] Or you could always go the route of a new hood or a hood scoop if you're looking to differentiate your car, but I will say that these are one of the least expensive options that are currently out there right now. As for the install, you're looking at a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, even though you do have to do a little bit of drilling for these. [00:02:00] You're gonna expect to have this finished in an hour or two tops and if you're planning on getting these painted, I'd just make sure that you test fit them first. You're gonna need a few basic tools and a drill, of course. The hood blanket will need to come off and there are a few pieces of hardware to get the stock vents out of the way. [00:02:15] You use the drill template to drill two holes on each side of the hood. I would just seal these holes after you drill them, so you don't have any rust issues. Then your foam's gonna go right into place. The Roush Heat Extractors clip into the factory slots and then screw into place. Next you can reinstall the [00:02:30] factory plastic piece and the factory hood blanket too. And that's all it's gonna take to get these installed. Wrapping things up here with the Roush Heat Extractors, these are hood vents that are gonna give your Mustang a subtle change in appearance. They're made from ABS plastic. They ship to you matte black, but they are [00:02:45] paintable and they have a great fit. You can check them out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

    Ask a Question

I have an open (no top cover) Ford Performance air intake. If I install these, will water when it rains or I wash my car drip down through the heat extractor openings and get water in my intake, thus potentially hurting my engine? Thanks for your time!

    MRyno58

    • Hello! Under most circumstances you shouldn't encounter any issues with water entering the heat extractors. At least not a significant enough amount to cause any harm under the hood. However, If it is a torrential downpour, or you hit a large puddle of water on the roadway, then I can see how it could be cause for some concern. With that said, there aren't any accessory devices to block off the heat extractors. Ford did use heat extractors as a factory option on some mustang models, and these did not have a block off function either. Therefore, I feel it is safe to say that any cause for concern is minimal. Lastly, factory models did come equipped with an enclosed air-box which will keep the filter completely safe from any moister. If switching to an enclosed filter is not a feasible option, I would recommend finding an alternative way to block off (at least the driver side) heat exactor in adverse weather conditions.

Can you retain the turn signals using these heat extractors?

    KEGT

    • With the amount of modification that will be done for the installation of the Roush Heat Extractors the factory turn signals that are mounted in the factory scoops will not be a direct fit. You will either not be able to use them anymore or you will have to slightly modify the Roush Heat Extractors to make it work.

How would you go about painting these? Since they are textured plastic I'm not sure a cost of glossy paint would show up well.

Do I really need to drill the holes in the hood because listening to a couple of your reviews they thought that the screws weren't needed and really hindered the progress of the project, because if I don't need to drill in my hood that would be good.

    Chitown

    • You will need to drill into the hood in order to have a proper installation of the heat extractors. The template and hardware you will need are supplied in this kit. if you follow the link below, it will take you to the installation guide. http://1.cdn.lib.americanmuscle.com/files/387049-manu.pdf

Do you have instrucctions available? Does it require cutting the hood...? If so is the template provided?

    Barricade

    • You do have drill holes in the hood and there is a template available online on where to drill the holes

      Roush Heat Extractors

They look really good but have no practical value. The vent for the heat to escape is about the size of my little finger so it is of no real value other than looks. Also, if you put these on your Mustang, drape a sheet over the ENTIRE engine compartment before you start to prevent a nut or push pin from bouncing (somewhere) into the engine compartment.

      Best accent

These are great, the ugly factory vents were always a pet peeve of mine. These are one of my favorite additions, it says to drill you don’t have to I didn’t, Sita perfectly with just the clips. Great product.

      decent product

drilling template is not accurate, and not very clear on how to place it. I find roush does not have accurate templates on any of their products I've purchased so far. BUT... with that said, I'm happy with the overall results. i got the look i wanted. it won't remove any more heat compared to the OEM stuff, but i was in for style on this purchase. no regrets. took about an hour from start to finish.

      Look good!

Love the look. Should be more functional than the stock. Hate the templates too much room for error; what is wrong with these manufacturers, give us good, complete instructions! AM should tell their suppliers this, its too common :(

      Looks good from 20 feet.

They look great from 20 feet away however, up close you can see imperfections in the mold. Also, the small strip on adhesive on the front tip does not stick very well. I'm going to have to remove them and put some 3m double sided tape to keep the tips from sticking up. Kinda surprised coming from Roush.

      Roush Heat Extractors

Nice modification that any individual with a little wrench experience could install. Though I am not convinced they truly extract more heat, they do look nicer than the stock single-vent extractors. I did skip the install step that requires the drilling of additional holes on the underside of the hood, because I feel the retaining clips and use of the original nuts and bolts secure the extractors just fine (though I don't necessarily advise this, as I'm sure there is a logical reason the supplies and instructions were provided). The black plastic used to make these is much like that of Ford's black plastic used on the chin spoiler and side skirts. One of my extractors did have a small blemish, but not noticeable enough unless you are very close up. Nice product, fits well, and looks good!

      Cheaply made

These pieces do make the hood stand out, but the definetly could be of better quality for the Price charged. They also should come painted if desired. The cheap double back tape used to hold the front of the extractor down came loose on both sides the next morning. I ended up drilling two holes in each one and installing flathead sheet metal screws to hold them down. Not something that should have to be done on $200.00 items.

They make the car look much more aggressive. The only problem was one of the corners that has the doble sided tape was not as wide as it should have been so it didn’t stick down as it should have.

      Looks great, fitment is horrible.

Love the way these look, they seem to be made well, but the fitment on my set is horrible. Followed instructions to a t. These things creak when the hood is opened or closed, the template didn't line up with the holes. The extractors leave gaps in the inside and back of the hood. My set came in with weird spots and swirls in the plastic along with two cuts and gouges, so I had them color matched to my hood. Make sure to prep these extremely well or you will have bumps showing through, as this is textured plastic. Overall the looks are awesome if you can deal with the horrible QC.
