Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Justin with AmericanMuscle.com here with my detailed review of the RTR Tactical Performance Competition Spec Axle-Back Exhaust, available for your 2015 and up Mustang GT, with your choice or either a black or polished tip. So, when talking directly with Vaughn about his exhaust and what his goals were with the RTR systems, he told me specifically he wanted to eliminate the robotic tones of the Coyote motor and the Coyote exhaust notes. So basically, RTR, Vaughn, and Magnaflow, who these mufflers are made by, all put their heads together and came up with a couple of systems; the street spec, which is available here on AM, and the competition spec, which I have with me here in this video. Now the street spec, as you might expect, a little bit more mild. Competition spec is going to be a little bit more aggressive. And as you guys heard at the top of this video, this thing definitely delivers some solid, low-end tone, a strong three out of five on my one to five, or "one to wake the neighbors" scale. It's not the loudest or most raspy kit, like the Corsa Extreme or the Borla Tac, for instance. Instead, it's going to deliver that low, thumping tone with the factory resonator still in place. Of course, remove that resonator and insert your favorite X or H-pipe, and of course that number and sound goes up dramatically. All right guys, with the sound out of the way, let's talk about some of the finer details and some of the guts here with the RTR Competition Spec. And let's start out with probably the most unique portion of this entire axle-back, this dual-inlet design. One portion is going to go through more of a straight through section of the muffler, whereas the other portion here is going to get directed through more of a chambered or tuned section of the muffler. And again, that's going to deliver that deeper tone while eliminating any rasp or any interior drone. And as someone who's driven this system here around town, I can tell you, this thing certainly delivers. Sounds great inside the cabin. Now this is a full stainless steel build here guys, so again gonna help the durability. Better quality, better materials overall. And it's finished off in a black ceramic coating. This is not paint. So basically this is not going to chip, it's not going to fade like a painted surface might. And that's going to increase the overall durability. What little piping there is on this system is all mandrel-bent. And it's all going to finish off with your choice again of either a black tip here, again a little bit more of a sleeker look. Or, for a few bucks more, you can opt for a polished tip. It's gonna give you more of a traditional look. No matter what tip option you go with, both will be emblazoned with that RTR logo. On the topic of price, the RTR cans are going to set you back roughly $600 to $700, depending on your tip choice. Which, I know might sound a little pricey. But when you weigh your options here at AmericanMuscle.com, I think you're going to find that to be the average price point for most of the premium aftermarket axle-back exhaust systems. Including, of course, Magnaflow, Borla, Kooks, Ford Racing, things like that. You can spend a little less and go with a pipe system. And of course, you can spend a little bit more and go with a Corsa system. But overall, you're going to find a lot in that $600 to $700 price range, and the RTR definitely fits in there nicely. As for the install here, guys, well again, by now you should be aware that you do have to cut with any aftermarket axle-back for your S550 GT. So just make sure you have your favorite cutting device on hand before getting started. It's really not all that hard. But because you do have to cut, we'll call it two out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. About an hour or two before you're making noise in the garage or driveway. So just to recap again, favorite cutting device. I prefer a Sawzall. A fresh metal blade will definitely be your friend here. Grab your eye protection, measure twice, cut once, and you should be good to go. So to wrap things up, in my opinion, the RTR Competition Spec Axle-Back really does deliver a pretty unique sound unlike really anything I've heard for the S550 GT. So, RTR, Magnaflow, mission accomplished. Guys, don't take my word for it. Feel free to read up on some customer reviews here on the site, just to help you make your own decision before buying. Thanks for watching, I'm Justin. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Ready To Rock! The RTR Tactical Performance Competition Spec Axle-Back Exhaust will not only add an aggressive beastly sound to your Coyote powered S550 GT Mustang, but it will also improve your pony's exhaust flow for an increase in rear wheel horse power and torque. These are the same exact premium mufflers that are included as original factory equipment on the Ford Mustang RTR designed and developed by Vaughn Gittin Jr. This RTR System was made in close collaboration with Magnaflow Exhaust.

Super Aggressive Sound. RTR worked closely with Magnaflow to achieve a very unique, very aggressive sound that gets rid of the robotic tones of the Coyotes variable cams, producing a clean and crisp consistent exhaust note with very minimal in cabin "drone."

Quality Construction. Manufactured from mandrel-bent 3" diameter stainless steel tubing to improve exhaust flow, this RTR Tactical Performance Competition Spec Axle-Back Exhaust System features two chambered mufflers with 4" polished tips that are etched with the "RTR" logo for truly aggressive styling.

Black Ceramic Coating. This RTR Tactical Performance Competition Spec Axle-Back has been finished with a Black Ceramic protective coating, that not only gives this exhaust a dark and intimidating appeal, but it also provides a high temperature thermal barrier for additional protection from the elements.

Cut & Clamp Installation. The installation of this Axle-Back Exhaust will require cutting and removing the stock muffler assemblies and clamping the new muffler assemblies in place. Clamps and instructions are provided.

Application. This RTR Tactical Performance Competition Spec Axle-Back Exhaust with Polished Tips is specifically designed to fit both fastback and convertible 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the Coyote 5.0L DOHC V8 engine.

I have a 2016 Gt Mustang in the UK. Can you confirm that this exhaust system with the rest of the system as factory stock will be street legal in the UK? Just a bit concerned as these are referred to as "competition spec"? Many thanks

  • Hello! You will have to check with your local ordinances to see if this exhaust system would be legal in the UK

Hey I was wondering if they offer just the tips and the clamps for them because I bought the axle backs from someone and they didn't have the tips

BillySAW951

  • Unfortunately, at this time we do not offer just the tips that are included with the RTR Tactical Performance Competition Spec Axle-Back Exhaust.

is it true that the rtf tactical performance has show approximately 10hp gain?

Fred

  • Probably not, that seems a little high for hp gains for an axleback. Honestly, the only time you are really going to see true/noticeable gains is when you are talking about long tube headers. Otherwise, you're looking at single digit numbers usually.

Ricky36 mentioned there was a video with the H-pipe setup. Is he refering to the only video visible here? Meaning that the orange car in the beggining has an H-pipe? or is there another video? And if it has an H-pipe setup, how would it compare to the Magnaflow Comp setup? I have the Magnaflow comp. with an H-pipe and my car drones harder than the US gov. I want headers but neither me, my neighbours or my house (Walls shake) can afford for my exhaust to get any lowder... This seem like they are a better option than the Magnaflow comp. or maybe pair the headrs with the street version... Any input is appreciated.

Verdomix

  • The video on these page with the Competition Orange Mustang is the video that he was referring to. The RTR Tactial's will not have very much drone to them. The RTR's have a very loud, aggressive tone that does not have as much drone as other Axle-Backs.

I have a little problem with these exhousts. I own a '16 Mustang V8 5,0 in manual transmission. Seams that after changing from the original exhaust to this one, the car had lost a lot of power on the sixth gear. Are there any dB killers that need to be removed prior instalation due to the the noise reduction or anything ? What could be the couse of this? All other gears are working as well as before the instalation, the last gear doesn't. Will be very glad for some help. thanx!

Arczi

  • Changing your rear mufflers will not have any affect on your performance in any gear. There is not enough back pressure built up at the mufflers to cause a difference by removing them or leaving the stock ones on. I would recommend taking your car to a shop to have this issue diagnosed and looked at.

With the Ford Racing X-Pipe these are LOUD

I purchased these with the Ford Racing X-Pipe and WOW are they loud. I wasnt expecting that at all but very happy with them. If I were to do this again, I would probably keep the factory resonator installed first to see if I am not getting the sound I was looking for. Then maybe install the X-Pipe at a later date. The backflow with this setup though is really really good. Sounds awesome pulling up to a light and decelerating just to hear the exhaust pop a little. My only complaint is that in 6th gear doing about 70mph the drone is pretty significant. I am thinking the RPM is just right to make the maximum amount of exhaust noise in the car because it isn't near as bad at 60 or 80 or 120 : ). Overall, these along with the X-Pipe have completely transformed my GT and I am extremely happy with the purchase. Of note, I live in Virginia and the company is in Pennsylvania so I received the parts the day after I ordered them even with the standard shipping which is OUTSTANDING. I would not purchase any aftermarket Mustang parts from anyone else.

    Amazing sound.

This exhaust makes your mustang sound exactly like a mustang should. I spent a lot of time searching for the perfect exhaust note, and I couldn't be happier. I installed them myself and as long as you can read a tape measure and use a sawzall, safely, you'll be fine. The driver side was on in less than 10 minutes but I had to fight with the passenger side a little. I ended up cutting a piece of tube off the factory muffler and using a hammer to push it in the inlet on the new muffler causing the inlet to spread. Pulled the tube out and it slid right on the exhaust. Overall, about a 30-45 minute install, but definitely worth the little bit of hassle.

    Replaced my GT's stock exhaust

One of the first mods that I wanted to do to my new '16 GT was upgrade the look and sound of the exhaust. I've had the RTR Performance exhaust on my car for about 2 weeks now and could not be happier. The matte black finish and RTR logo on the side look absolutely great and the sound is perfect. There's always rumble, with the occasional backfire. If you're not looking for a cat-back, this is your pick.

    Awesome sound!!!

I was kinda skeptical on how the RTR axlebacks would sound with the corsa double x mid pipe but it sounds fantastic. It gives you a low deep tone at idle and low rpm and when crusing theres a little drone but turn on the radio and it cancels out the lil drone you hear but once you get around four thousand rpm the corsa mid pipe really wakes it up and gives you a loud aggressive tone. Glad I purchased this combination it is a head turner I LOVE IT!!!

Sleeper until you wake it up!!!

I listened to many different exhaust videos trying to figure out what brand I wanted ( almost impossible to tell BTW ) I finally broke down and chose one. I must say I'm very impressed on the sound that it makes. At first, at idle I was a little disappointed thinking wow this didn't change much beside the slight rumble. On my road test after i opened the throttle a little it woke up and blew me away. Now after driving with it for a week I have 0 regrets. This exhaust sounds amazing. I'm almost afraid to install the H pipe delete systems cause I really love the sleeper part about it. I would most definitely recommend this exhaust for any new Mustang.

    RTR System

The RTR competition axle back was a little quiter than i had originally thought. Mostly due to the stock resonator. It has a great starting growl, and sounds aggressive at full throttle. Adding a resonator delete x or h pype will make this system really stand out. Overall its a great system for daily drivers.

Scare the competition, without waking the neighbors!

I have a 2001 GT with the SLP Loudmouth and Pypes H-pype. It screams, growls, and pops like the aggressiveness of my youth. For my 2015 GT I wanted something more "mature" sounding that still turns heads when you smash the 'Go' pedal. This exhaust does exactly that. The exhaust breaks off into 2 different sections of the muffler. One goes into a large resonance chamber, the other is a straight pipe out the back. This setup tunes the sound of the car perfectly. It produces an awesome deep base on startup and idle that is not obnoxiously loud. When you punch it the exhaust takes the straight pipe path that really gets the adrenaline pumping. Couldn't ask for a better addition to my stang.

    LOUD!!!!

Love the RTR tactical comp spec axle-back! I already had a heartthrob x-pipe installed and knew it was time to get a axle-back. I enjoy the RTR for the unique exhaust note it has but you must be warned there is drone when you hit 70 MPH when on 5th gear. If you don't mind the drone this system delivers a loud but enjoyable tune.

    best axle back for 2016!!

I use to own the sport spec version of this for my prev car( 2012 mustang gt) and I loved it . my only complaint was it wasn't really loud enough when on WOT. This one has fixed that issue , I am very pleased with the growl it gives the car and has just enough at throttle but not too much .if your looking for something to make your gt sound like it should from the factory then this is for you! installation wasn't to bad other than having to cut on my new 2016 lol which took a little nerve but went on fine after I cut the pipes as instructed. if you aren't sure about the cutting have a shop put it on, better safe than sorry.

    Sounds perfect

I was hesitant to put a aftermarket exhaust on my brand new car. Didn't want to chop up the factory exhaust and be unhappy with the sound. I went with these from the reviews being that they are not obnoxiously loud. First time I heard them when I started my car it was instantly known I loved it. It has a very throaty V8 sound, with the crackle you get from a DOHC like the 5.0. IMO it's the PERFECT way a V8 should sound. Very happy. Videos on YouTube of this exhaust note does not do it justice or sound even close. You won't be disappointed.

    Unique exhaust note

Really wanted something different from the rest and also something that could appear stock and blend into the vehicle that would compliment my exterior color options. Not only does it look awesome it sounds even better. I would say it's a more refined sound compared to some axle backs I've heard around, not the loudest but it sure does turn heads. If your looking for great sound and not overly loud it's great! Drone is minimal to non.

I was scared to try something different but I knew I would be good with these from magnaflows reputation. I highly recommend these !

    Loud!!!

Added this with H pipe and my GT is loud...very loud! I actually hope that it mellows a little after a few hundred miles, because at full throttle this thing is louder than my big block C10 with 3" super 44s and turn downs. The fit and finish was great and it has a very distinct sound when compared to the other axle backs I have heard. I would recommend this as a first buy to see if you like the sound with the resonator prior to adding an H/X pipe. Awesome running through downtown Daegu and hearing the echo off of the high rises, but I can see it being too loud for road trips. I will return to update the review after a few hundred miles.

This RTR axelbacks and an SR performance x-pipe will make your car turn heads, you'll get some drone at 2000 rpms but that's only when you are cruising on the highways. A couple of friends helped me put it on and we didn't know we needed to do some cutting because of the newer body styles, so it took us about 3 hours to install.
