- How to Install BBK 90mm Throttle Body on your Mustang
Hey everybody, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my detailed look at BBK's 85 and 90mm Throttle Body options fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang GT. The BBK throttle body options are going to be for any S550 GT owner out there who is looking for every last bit of power out of their naturally aspirated or forced induction five liter setup. Let's face it guys, your motors are essentially glorified air pumps. Their job, to move air in and out as quickly and efficiently as possible, making you go faster in the process. Now certain parts will help your efficiency more than others. For instance, a set of long tube patterns will be a little bit more beneficial in the quest for big power than say an aftermarket axle back exhaust system for instance. But both are going to be critical when you start making some big power. That being said, a throttle body is going to be one of those parts that's not going to make a ton of power on its own, but will be beneficial when the quest for more power starts getting a little bit more real. The factory GT throttle body is 80mm, guys. So BBK is giving you the option of stepping up either five or ten additional millimeters in diameter, depending on your application. Now a quick rule of thumb, I always like to recommend the 85mm option for naturally aspirated setups. While the 90mm option would be a perfect addition to any forced induction setup, whether you're going centrifugal blower or turbo application.Breaking down the construction a little bit, guys, here's what you're going to be looking at. Now high quality, 356 grade CNCed aluminium for pretty much the entire body. We were lucky enough to take a tour of the BBK facilities down in southern California. We've seen how these things take shape, and let me just tell you, it's very impressive. The throttle body essentially starts out life as a hunk of aluminium and then it's CNCed down to the final product you see here. One thing I do want to point out, BBK utilizes Ford OEM electronics for their drive by wire stuff, everything is pre-wired, ready to go, plug and play application here. You're not going to have to worry about a third party electronics or anything goofy with that. Now this is a no tune required part, meaning guys you can plug this thing in and go without the use of a custom tune. That's never a bad idea, that's always going to maximize your potential. Comparing this price-wise to other options on the market right now is kind of tough, because honestly, there's not a lot available for the S550 GT. That being said, you're going to be dropping around 500 bones for the BBK throttle body option, which might seem a little steep for some of you guys at home. But when you're trying to squeeze every last bit of power out of your setup, you have to pay to play. Switching gears to the install here, guys. Very simple stuff. You're looking at a one out of three wrench job, on my overall difficulty meter. Maybe 30 minutes to an hour in the garage or driveway to get everything knocked out. Basically if you're a first time wrencher out there, don't be afraid of this one. Only four bolts holding the throttle body onto your intake manifold. So grab yourself a basic socket set, a few extensions, and a flathead screwdriver to remove your intake from the actual throttle body. You're not going to have to totally remove the intake from the car, but just enough so you can gain access to the four bolts here. BBK does include brand new hardware for the new throttle body. So again, remove that factory throttle body, reinstall the new BBK in reverse order, and you should be good to go. All right guys, to wrap this one up here. In my opinion, a throttle body shouldn't be the first place you go in looking for more power out of your ride, because honestly, there are more gains to be had using different modifications for around the same price point. That being said, once you tackle all those basic modifications and you are looking for more power, an aftermarket throttle body from BBK will help you achieve more power through your naturally aspirated or forced induction setup when compared to your factory throttle body. Bought the 1st one and it was bad straight out of the box after an hour on the phone I was sent another one and it worked fine about 9 months later more so than not I punch it from a good roll it falls flat on its face due to the throttle body being hung in wide open position and leaves me on the side of the road until I clear the codes reflash the tune and repeat until it does it again... wouldn’t waists your money or timeHelpful (2)

Bad out of the Box
I had heart failure and it took awhile before I could get it installed. It was bad out of the box. When you start the Stang it instantly goes to 3000 rpm and every start afterward too. Once it warm up, it idles at 1300 rpm. I tried to get help from BBK but they give me the run around after saying they would do a warranty repair on it. So now I have a $600 paperweight.Helpful (6)

Smoother Throttle Response!
Throttle response should have been like this from the factory. Moving from stop to go, or putting more pedal down has been smoother than before. Install was really easy, literally a bolt-on upgrade. I went with the 90mm for mods down the line but I don't see any difference in power gains other than response improvement.Helpful (5)

Throttle Response Improved
Does what it does, fit perfectly with the Ingen Evolution CAI(the rubber coupling slipped right over perfectly with little to no effort). When I stepped on the throttle to drive out, I noticed immediately the response was smoother. I think the car should have came from the factory like this. I took a star off for Fit and Performance because I had trouble tightening one of the hex screws. I was afraid that I was going to over tighten or strip them but I knew that the gap between the body and screw shouldn't be there. Performance gain was non-existent with the mods I currently have but throttle response was what I wanted to change. Overall, I liked this product and have no issues what so ever. Install was pull this, snap back or tighten that once you're all done.Helpful (4)

Throughout the Install and Purchase process, both American Muscle and BBK Customer Service Reps were extremely helpful. The part however, was no good. I kept losing throttle power at lights before taking off. The dealership identified the problem as the throttle body. American Muscle Reps were EXTREMELY helpful and facilitated the return accordingly. Probably wont get another throttle body just yet and will rethink my build list after further research.Helpful (8)

Can the C L Racer Cold Air Intake fit the 90mm throttle body?
The BBK 90mm Throttle Body works with most aftermarket intakes and will work with the C&L Racer Cold Air Intake.
I watched the video and noticed that Justin from AM.com recommended an 85mm vs. the 90mm for naturally aspirated engines vs. the forced induction. My question is...if I plan to add a supercharger in the future would it be wise to purchase the 90mm, vs. a 85mm at this time when the car is purely stock? Thank you!
For naturally aspirated engines, I would recommend an 85mm throttle body as the air flow rate of the 85mm is the best setup for something that does not have a forced induction. To gain the most power out of a supercharger, you will need the biggest opening you can have which would be the 90mm as it will allow the flow rate to be compliant with the forced induction.
Does 90mm throttle body work with a supercharger?
The BBK 90mm Throttle Body can be used with a supercharger.
Will the bbk 90mm throttle body fit with a gt350 intake manifold? If not how could I go about fitting it. Also, would it cause issues if I was running N/A until I got a supercharger?
Unfortunately this will not fit with the GT350 intake manifold.
I have a 2015 GT, if I am going with a Roush CAI with VMP tuner, would a 90mm benefit me more than the 85? Or would you still only recommend the 85 over 90 for naturally aspirated engines. FYI, no forced induction in my future.
This throttle body is designed for the 15-17 Mustang GT models. Unfortunately fitment has not been confirmed for the 2018. We would recommend reaching out to Ford Performance.
This throttle body would be bigger than the OEM throttle body included on the Roush. Unfortunately, we have not tested this throttle body with the Roush Mustang and wouldnt be able to guarantee fitment with that model. We do not believe this would work with the Roush, however, you may be able to get it to work with modifications.
The BBK 90mm Throttle Body will not properly fit or mount to the GT350 Intake Manifold.
The 90mm throttle body would fit but would be designed to work best with a heavily modified car. If you car has the basic bolt on mods the 85mm throttle body would be better suited for you.
This will work on your intake yes.
Please contact our Customer Service department so we may best assist you with installing your BBK 90mm Throttle Body with your listed mods, as we may require additional information and pictures to provide the best assistance.
If your car is mostly stock running the BBK 90mm Throttle Body would be a little too excessive for your build. Either way with running a 90mm throttle body it would be highly recommended to get a custom tune so your car does not run to lean.
Either or BBK throttle bodies would work very well with your car. However, the BBK 90mm throttle body is more meant for heavily modified cars. With your set up the 85mm throttle body would be a good option!
Unfortunately due to the BBK 90mm Throttle Body being a direct fit item for the Mustang, we do not have any specific dimensions for the throttle body. We would recommend contacting BBK directly for specific measurements.
It would be difficult to diagnose the issue remotely, however, we would recommend clearing the check engine code, and performing the re-learn process on step 3 of the installation guide found in the PDF file on this webpage below: https://www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-90mm-throttlebody-1516gt-manu-install.html
