Hey, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and I have with me BBK’s tuned length shorty headers, available in your choice of either chrome or ceramic, fitting all 96-04 Mustang GTs. These headers feature what BBK refer to as their tuned length runner design, which makes them a hybrid between a standard shorty setup and a set of long tubes. As you can see the headers aren’t nearly as long as a set of long tubes, but in the end BBK claims more horsepower and torque, versus your typical shorty setup. As for the constructions, we’re looking at 1 ¾” mandrel bent stainless steel tubing, as well as these laser cut flanges for an OEM quality fit. So why would you want to go with a shorty setup versus a set of long tubes? Well, simply put a shorty header is going to be less expensive and much easier to install, versus a set of long tubes. This is due to the fact that most shorty headers are a direct bolt on, meaning you wouldn’t have to modify your Mid Pipe like you would using a set of long tube headers. Will the shorty perform just as good or better than a set of long tubes? Most likely no, but it’s still a solid upgrade over those restrictive cast iron factory manifolds. As I mentioned earlier you do have the choice of picking these headers are in a chrome finish or a ceramic finish. So what are the differences between the two? Well for one, you can see the chrome finish is a little brighter initially but that’s going to change as these headers heat cycle, eventually turning that bright silver into a dark blue or purple color. On the other hand, we have the ceramic finish, which is going to remain that bright silver, for years down the road. Secondly that ceramic coating is going to be better at reducing under the hood temperatures, which is always good for performance. Those added benefits do come at a cost as those ceramic coatings are typically a little more expensive than a chrome plated or a stainless header. Doing the install on any set of headers can be a little intense so it’s best to leave yourself a full day to tackle the job just to be on the safe side, and as always if you’re not feeling confident about this one, don’t hesitate to give your local shop a call, they’ll be happy to help you out. Are these headers smog legal in California? Also how much louder will the car get or made put a different sent of mufflers on, but would the mufflers effect the performance of the headers?

  • The BBK 1-5/8 in. Chrome Tuned Length Shorty Headers are CARB legal, and will have a minimal increase in sound. Changing the mufflers will not affect the performance of the headers.

    Headers

    These headers are awesome! They add so much sound and power! I have a straight pipe setup and it sounds loud and clean! I would recommend to get this product installed professionaly, unless you have a lot of time on your hands. This was a huge pain to install. There is very little room to work with and had to buy some new tools. But I learned a lot. Noticable HP gain!

    Not Over 350HP

    I have had these headers on my car (99 GT 4.6L PI) for about 5 years now and when it was non force inducted, the worst thing about them was the installation. Now that I am pushing almost 15PSI through my heads with a T-Trim, I noticed on the dyno that that AF readings were off between passenger and driver side. Passenger was .7:1 less then drivers (11.9:1 vs 11.2:1). After all else checked out fine, the suspicion came down to the passenger side header being more restrictive than the drivers side due that crimped neck right above the exit flange. Several calls to BBK confirmed that these headers should not be used in applications over 350HP, which I assume means 350RWHP. I am making 480RWHP. They said that that neck can get restrictive at higher power levels. Just FYI Also, they are VERY tough to install with the engine in the car. I did mine on a stand, and they were still tough!

    Best headers for the buck!

    For just under $300 these headers kick serious a**! Noticed a little bit of torque and hp gain plus if you have previous exhaust it really makes it rumble now

    BBK shorty headers

    I wasn\'t sure on what headers I wanted to go with but I was very impressed with my BBK cold-air intake so I decided to stick with BBK and buy these headers. I was not disappointed, not only do I feel the increase in HP but along with my Flowmaster exhaust and cold air intake my car sounds very mean. These headers are a must have.

    Nice Headers

    Like the other reviews the headers added a nice sound and HP gains were pretty good for the money. Save yourself some time and install these using a lift. Remove the K-member and the starter and the install is a breeze. K-member comes off in 30-40 minutes, manifolds off and headers on in 40 minutes and k-member back on in 30 minutes if you have a lift, trans jack, pole jack and simple tools. Driveway job would be very difficult as you cant get to half the header bolts with the k-member in the way. Whole job took 3 hours once car was cool.

    Amazing

    We had these headers installed on our 2003 GT, and what a difference! Definately recommed BBK o/r xpipe, the car is soooo loud, beastly/scary sounding, but the power is there to back it up---expect to shave off near .5-1sec off your 1/4 mile time. you can hear the setup at: http://www.youtube.com/user/LyricalButterfly

    GREAT HEADERS

    They look great, well built and nice finish, not to mention it got here in 2 days for the price of one dollar. I love this sites shipping policies. When coupled with off road x-pipe and flowmasters out the back, it was a sick nascar sounding rumble. A+

    Amazing!

    Just got these installed on my 98 GT. If you already have a exhaust installed, it will make it quieter but the rumble will be deeper. I noticed a amazing difference in the way my car breathes and picks up and also makes a great difference with 4.10 gears in the rear. I feel as if the headers where the key to unleashing the beast. I also highly recommend getting your car tuned after installation!

    Great headers

    Glad to see finally changed the photo. Make a huge difference. With the SLP X-pipes, 373 rear end, at all speeds now has a tight roar. Definite power gain. Engine idles smoother, and revs so much happier. Very happy!

    sounds great

    put in my self...needless to say took us over 12 hours had to use car jacks and lay on the creeper. would recommend paying someone. and i believe i have a leak put it in 5th and give it a little gas big time noise coming from the exhaust from around the headers=(

    Chrome = Blue

    Install was painful, time consuming, bolts cut, etc...recommend you let a professional suffer thru it. Drive home after install & headers turned blue as a smurf so if this will bother you I recommend you spend a little more for ceramic.

    A must buy!

    I had these installed while having my engine rebuilt, almost impossible to install unless you have alot of time and a lift. Deep growl and considerable HP gain. A definite buy.

    CARB NUMBER?

    yes they do sound very good and give you more HP. I have these BBK headers with a MRT mid pipe and Magnaflow Magnapacks. But they do not have a CARB number yet. BBK say they are working on getting one in 6 months around FEB-MAR 2010. A real pain to take out and put back on..........

    Easy weekend install? No.

    NO SPACE IN THIS ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I don't know how some of you said it was a easy weekend install. When we finally get the headers in, it was so cramped that it was right up against my A/C Freon line and when it got hot enough, it busted. This costed me $900 in repairs and installation for the headers. Maybe it was just my mustang, but be careful. Installing long tube headers would have been more cost efficient and even a better fit. Ridiculous. I would recommend LT headers, or at least a different brand. Don't break your hands over these like I did.

    Great headers, tough install

    I work full time as a mechanic. I picked these up last year for my 03 GT convertible and installed them myself. They are a great bang for your buck and a must have if you plan on going with a full exhaust on a reasonable budget. The install was definitely a pain (more so on the passenger side) but that should be expected with any aftermarket headers. Also the headers need to be re-torqued after about 500 miles to ensure the heat hasnt caused the bolts to wiggle loose. This can easily be done from the top of the engine yourself, though. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the these shorty headers from BBK and American Muscle. My stang sounds better than ever and can finally breathe when you stomp the throttle. These headers (along with my o/r BBK X pipe and magnapacks) really make my car turn heads and people take notice to the rest of my hard work. Worth. Every. Penny. =]

    Buy your own gaskets.

    Putting these on was a lot of fun. I have never dropped a k member to do headers before. We got the car together and it sounded great for 2 days until the cheap fiber gasket ripped. I would really recomend buying a better gasket before installing these. I called bbk and they understand this is an issue and offered me the upgraded gasket and they have not made an attempt to get a hold of me again. These will be a great addition to my car if I can get the leak fixed.

    Expect 4 things from these headers.

    1. These are NOT a backyard project,get a good shop to install them. 2. These are NOT loud, but a good low rumble. 3. These are NOT for show, they can hardle be seen looking down on the engine. 4. These will make a diference in take off power. I suggest you also add the cool air intake to complement them.

    great product

    i really like the headers. i have a o/r x pipe and it gave it a smoother, less raspy sound. the welds are really nice and clean. i had no fitment issues. took about 10 hrs to install since it was my first time on a 4.6. wasn't too hard to install. all you really need to do is: Jack up the car disconnect the mid pipe remove starter remove motor mounts undo the steering shaft bolt and move out of the way install and put it back together easy as that.
