    Review & Install Video

Hey, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and I have with me BBK’s tuned length shorty headers, available in your choice of either chrome or ceramic, fitting all 96-04 Mustang GTs. These headers feature what BBK refer to as their tuned length runner design, which makes them a hybrid between a standard shorty setup and a set of long tubes. As you can see the headers aren’t nearly as long as a set of long tubes, but in the end BBK claims more horsepower and torque, versus your typical shorty setup. As for the constructions, we’re looking at 1 ¾” mandrel bent stainless steel tubing, as well as these laser cut flanges for an OEM quality fit. So why would you want to go with a shorty setup versus a set of long tubes? Well, simply put a shorty header is going to be less expensive and much easier to install, versus a set of long tubes. This is due to the fact that most shorty headers are a direct bolt on, meaning you wouldn’t have to modify your Mid Pipe like you would using a set of long tube headers. Will the shorty perform just as good or better than a set of long tubes? Most likely no, but it’s still a solid upgrade over those restrictive cast iron factory manifolds. As I mentioned earlier you do have the choice of picking these headers are in a chrome finish or a ceramic finish. So what are the differences between the two? Well for one, you can see the chrome finish is a little brighter initially but that’s going to change as these headers heat cycle, eventually turning that bright silver into a dark blue or purple color. On the other hand, we have the ceramic finish, which is going to remain that bright silver, for years down the road. Secondly that ceramic coating is going to be better at reducing under the hood temperatures, which is always good for performance. Those added benefits do come at a cost as those ceramic coatings are typically a little more expensive than a chrome plated or a stainless header. Doing the install on any set of headers can be a little intense so it’s best to leave yourself a full day to tackle the job just to be on the safe side, and as always if you’re not feeling confident about this one, don’t hesitate to give your local shop a call, they’ll be happy to help you out. So if you’re looking for a bolt on header with the installation and price benefits of a shorty, and the performance to back it all up, then be sure to check out BBK’s tuned length shorty headers available right here at AmericanMuscle.com

More Horsepower and Torque. Improve the performance of your Mustang with a set of BBK Shorty Tuned Length Headers. These BBK Shorty headers will greatly improve your mustangs exhaust flow over the factory manifolds increasing your Pony's horsepower and torque.

Quality Construction. BBK Shorty Exhaust headers are manufactured from 1-5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow and feature one piece, laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then finished with a bright chrome finish for good looks.

Application. These Chrome Shorty Tuned Length Headers are designed to fit the 1996 to 2004 GT and 2001 Bullitt Mustangs. BBK headers include high-quality mounting hardware, gaskets and instructions so they'll bolt right up to your Mustangs stock Mid Pipe.

I have a 98 GT 5 speed with stock exhaust. I’m about to add the SR performance 70 mm throttle body and a JLT. Performance CAI. I’m getting confused as to which route to go with the exhaust. The car is lowered 2 inches so I think I want to go with shorty headers. I want to keep it as legal as possible so I believe I need to keep the cats. What combo could/should I go with? These headers with an H pipe and then maybe flowmaster? I don’t want it too obnoxious as it’s just a driver car not for track. Any opinions? 1 answer

      Hindsight is 20/20

Unless you either plan on; A- removing the heads and or motor, B- dropping the k-member and lowering the motor. the instructions BBK provides are laughable, even called the company and they sent me a video link that just frustrated me even more because it was incredibly vague that they made it sound easy peasy. Good luck trying to install them with the motor still in the car. I ended up going with plan B, I invented new Cuss words and had cuts all over my hands/face. IT sounded nice after install w/ off-road H-pipe and flowmaster 40's, but ...... after all that trouble I should have just installed long tubes. Oh yeah, if you end up with an exhaust leak......good luck. If you have stock and are deciding to upgrade, go long tubes or stay stock in my opinion.

Wonderful product BUT..... make sure you know how to drop a k-member and spend many hours installing. if you don't have a lift, I recommend taking it to a shop.

Took the heads off to install these.. had to replace my egr valve as well...they bolted on fine.. getting the dip stick tube back in took forever had to bend it and hammer it in which took a couple hours. The gaskets that come with it don’t work well..

A pain to put in but worth it

Started this on a weekend, finished it in 3 days between work, bought some felpro gaskets because the ones that are provided are kind of thin so I didn't trust them. All in all it took me probably about 8 hours alone. You'll need stubby wrenches and a lot of patience. Broke my A/C line because I lost my patience. All in all if you're going to do it in the car make sure to jack the motor out of the mounts so you can kind of move the motor to where you need it. Great product, finally pulled my full exhaust together and they sound great all put together.

      BBK Headers

Headers look great. My motor was already out so installing was a breeze. Sounds great but can't say anything about HP because of all the upgrades done at same time. Would recommend to anyone if the motor is out of car.

      Things to know

The good: They sound nice. Deepened the tone of the exhaust, and made it smoother. No more sudden loud raspy sounds, and it is louder under WOT. The bad: Tight Fit! Save yourself some time and drop the K member. I tried to do it at first by simply jacking the engine. Now, I have big hands, but even without that disadvantage I don't see how the install is possible. Put new motor mounts in at the same time, and make note that the driver side rear motor mount bolt can't be installed with the header tightened down (maybe I got a bad set). The bolt is just a smidge too long. On the passenger side there is an AC hose touching the header! I caught this at the last minute. To avoid melting the ac hose here's what I did. I removed the clip from the frame rail down below the hose. I then carefully bent the line up in one place next to the canister near the firewall, and in three places coming off of the condenser. I spread the load out a little bit to avoid kinking the tube. I was able to get the hose an inch or so away from the header, and then I wrapped it to the hose above it with exhaust wrap. I've been running the car hot last night and this morning and it looks like my fix worked. The hose hasn't melted yet, but time will tell.

      Mustang headers

These headers were an incredible task to install without a lift! Took me 2 days for removing old manifolds and finish complete installing of the headers and everything else! You will need a strut braced engine lift to complete this job on a 2000 mustang GT and they don't tell you that. I am happy with the performance / horsepower increase

      Good product.

Fitment was good. I installed mine on an engine stand; I'm not sure how anyone could install these with the engine in the car. I fought bolts and had all the room in the world. They are rusting in tiny spots but overall durability is good. No leaks or any kind! I recommend these.

      BBK Shorties!

Installed these headers without a lift and with the engine still in the car I would not recommend doing it if you don't have a lift was extremely hard to install with just jack stands there is hardly any room to work once we got them in there to tighten them down we couldn't reach one of the bolts it wouldn't go through where it was supposed to had to grind into the spot the bolt goes through to make a slot for it and they didn't fit too great once in there but I will say besides the nightmare of the install it really gave my car a much more deeper exhaust note and added a noticeable horsepower gain when I got it tuned sounds deep and clean now and I love the sound!

      Great

At first I couldn't get the darn things to fit so I figured something was wrong looked around sure enough my motor mounts where all woren down. I replaced them and they fit perfectly as iv seen some reviews saying they are a pain in the neck. There only a pain if something else is wrong so check them motor mounts.
