    Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of BBK’s long tube headers, available in your choice of either ceramic, or chrome, fitting the 1996-2004 manual Mustang GT. Long tube headers are one of those mods on the long list of basic bolt ons, that aim to make more power than the factory part they’re replacing. In this case, these long tube headers from BBK are going to replace the ultra restrictive cast iron factory manifolds, which are notorious for choking out the flow of exhaust. Taking a closer look at the headers themselves, you’ll see BBK went with mandrel bent 1-5/8” tubing which should definitely help your flow of exhaust. In addition we’re also looking at laser cut flanges, as well as pre-welded bungs for your O2 sensor as well as your EGR. One thing I did want to point out with these headers that I noticed right away, was that BBK included a notch for the steering shaft, to prevent any rubbing or any interference. This is huge because some other header companies do not offer this, and therefore you might run into some fitment issues. Finally BBK gives you the option of picking these long tubes up in a chrome finish, or for a few bucks more you can opt for the ceramic coating. That ceramic coating is going to offer a couple of different benefits, first, performance, ceramic dissipates heat a little better than a stainless header, so it’s going to be slightly better performance wise and it’s going to be slightly better at reducing under hood temperatures, which is always a good thing. In addition that ceramic coating is also going to be better at reducing corrosion, which is only going to increase the longevity of the header itself. The final difference is appearance, both of these header options will offer their own unique look as they age. First up, we have the ceramics, they’re going to stay this bright silver color pretty much their entire life, on the other hand we have the chrome version, which as they heat cycle, tend to turn a dark blue/purple color which some people might like, others may not. Installing any set of long tubes can be a little intense, so if you don’t think you have the mechanical skill, or the tools to get this one done, I’d leave this job in the hands of the professionals. However if you are going to do the install yourself, just leave a full day to get everything bolted up properly, just to be safe. Keep in mind, whenever you install a set of long tubes, you will need to address your Mid Pipe. In this case in order to run these long tubes from BBK, you will need to run a flanged and shorty Mid Pipe. BBK recommends their shorty H-Pipe just for the best fitment and gains. So if you’re looking for a set of long tubes for your 96-04 GT, with the option of going for a ceramic or chrome finish, then be sure to check out these long tubes from BBK right here at AmericanMuscle.com

More Horsepower and Torque. Improve the performance of your SOHC 4.6L Mustang GT with a set of BBK Long Tube Headers. These BBK ceramic coated headers will greatly improve your Mustangs exhaust flow over the restrictive stock cast iron manifolds and increase your Pony's horsepower and torque. Increases of up to 22 RWHP have been seen when installed with a BBK shorty H-pipe.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduce under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

Quality BBK Construction. BBK Long Tube Exhaust headers are manufactured from 1 5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. And feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished silver ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Application. These Ceramic Long Tube Headers are designed to fit the coupe and convertible, manual transmission 1996 to 2004 GT Mustangs. BBK long tube headers require a flanged end shorty midpipe in order to function properly. BBK recommends using a BBK shorty Mid-Pipe for the best performance gains (see drop down option above).

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only. An O2 Sensor Extension Kit and BBK shorty Mid Pipe are required for installation.

clearance issue ? Will i have a clearance issue if i used H&R Spring and it dropped about 2 inches in the front and 1.5 in the back? Will the headers be hitting the ground everytime there is a pot hole ???

    • I have H&R Race Springs on my '01 Cobra with the BBK long tube headers and do not have any unusual issues with clearance under normal driving. Speed bumps will slow you down but hat is about the extent of it.

hi i want to buy these headers and a matching catted x pipe.. are the o2 extenders necessary? and what if i cant get my car tuned right away will it hurt it in any way?.

    • Hey Chuck, The o2 sensor extensions are necessary to complete the installation, as well as the tune. Your car will run rich/lean with out a tune which does harm the vehicle and must get it properly tuned to adjust for the power and flow of pressure.

Hi I just bought these headers along with a shorty H-midpipe and the loudmouth exhaust they are currently being installed and the mechanic said I may have to get it tuned cause the rear end may throw codes? I have it on a diablo tune with 4:10 gears CAI and I also of the 02 sensor extensions, why would it still throw codes? He says it may need to be put on a dyno to be properly tuned also so it doesn't backfire when I down shift would this be true?

    • Anytime you buy long tube headers you will need to retune your vehicle to accommodate the new air flow rates of the long tubes as they change compared to shorty headers and downpipes.

I have an 02 GT with stock headers, stock mid pipe, and SLP LM1 and wanted to make it louder but I am on a budget but don't want to go near Pacesetter. I like the sound of X pipes and the price of the BBK Ceramic Long tubes. However I don't like how people said that how the BBK X pipe doesn't fit well with the LT's and how they had to do some extra bending. But I do not want to do that after spending $800 on an exhaust that was supposed to fit with each other. My question is will the BBK LT's fit with the BBK offroad X pipe without any issues what so ever? Headers

Was probably the hardest install I've ever done I wouldn't do it again on a new Edge ever but it looks good and sounds decent. And yes there's no way getting around it you're going to have to drop the K member.

      Great add

This was absolutely a expensive time consuming pain, but I am happy with the results, the sound of the exhaust is so clean now and the air flow is huge, I can hear the air flow through the motor!! Also my car feels so much different in terms of preformance it absolutely romps now! Went with an h-pipe and magma flow exhaust

      BBK long tube headers

The BBK long tube headers installed beautifully. Due to some of the bends in the tubes a stud and bolt combo had to be used. That hardware was provided by BBK so there was no panicked run to the hardware store.

This is a great product you will instantly feel the difference on your ponie not only on the power but just also on how strong it will sound this is a new level for that American bad boy I’ll recommended the only thing I was very desapointed is because not many mufflers shop or mechanic are willing to do this kind of job because the complexity but once the job is done all the wait was totally worthed

      Must Have!!!

Just had this installed and wow. They are not easy to see under the hood the way it is positioned but if someone is looking close enough they look good. Opens the exhaust and lets it all flow easier. Didn't really feel much of a performance gain.

Power, sound, all thats promised is there.

Took it to the shop to install out of fear of making it a weekend long project, at the time winter was an impending doom and I was afraid that the engine had to be lifted and or k member dropped for room to install. The shop guys had it done with in 2 days. I made the decision of pairing these bad boys with the SLP loud mouth 1 cat back exhaust and BBK X pipe with high flo cats. Sound and power is incredible, much more noticeable after tune. Bama tunes should work perfectly fine with this bolt on. Major changes to idle too. Overall entirely satisfied. 5 out of 5.

      Long tube header

The BBK long tube headers are a great fit. Installation took the better part of a day but went on without problems. After you drop the k member you have access to all the bolts. Like any header install there are some on the bolt that are difficult to get to but nothing that requires special tools. Well worth the price. Great sound, performance and look.

      BBK long tube headers

Installed on 2001mustang bullet gt. Perfect fit paired with mid H pipe off road. And finally Flowmaster American thunder cat back system. Perfect fit front to back. Hangers and all. Stainless steel tips perfectly centered and flush at bumper. Note. Bolts are extremely hard to get in Passenger side closes to firewall with starter out and motor lifted inch or two. Nice looking product.

A bad muffler shop and I'm sick to my stomach.

I honestly can't tell you anything. The shop that I took it to installation. Had it almost two weeks.by the everything was said and done my mustang as beautiful as she us , is currently sitting up on blocks waiting for the owner of the shop to do the right thing and replace my now blown motor. So I can't give you a review. I really wish I could . I can tell you that they were a beutiful in the box.

      1996 Mustang GT

Shipping was timely. I installed these headers solo. It took me 19 hours start to finish. You're going to need rust penetrating WD40. Had some problems with the stock manifold bolts breaking and my oil dipstick tube, which I broke and local part stores do not sell them. Ratchet wrenches and crows feet are needed and also you'll need to cut a few of the bolts. They won't fit in the holes because the pipes are too close. You can either lower the K member and then the engine or unbolt the engine and jack it up from the K member. You will need 3 jacks if this is a solo job and 4 jacks stands. I recommend a professional install. Sounds like a boss with these headers on though.

      Best Bang for your Buck

This was so far the best mod for my car. I spent days reviewing long tube headers had my mind set on Kooks but changed it at the last minute. Mainly because I wanted the catted H-Pipe. Along with a Bama tune this combo brought my GT to life, I also have super 44's and I 100 satisfied. If I started over this would be my first mod. I had it professionally installed, the shop said it was extremely big job.
