Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with, and this is my breakdown of BBK’s long tube headers, available in your choice of either ceramic, or chrome, fitting the 1996-2004 manual Mustang GT. Long tube headers are one of those mods on the long list of basic bolt ons, that aim to make more power than the factory part they’re replacing. In this case, these long tube headers from BBK are going to replace the ultra restrictive cast iron factory manifolds, which are notorious for choking out the flow of exhaust. Taking a closer look at the headers themselves, you’ll see BBK went with mandrel bent 1-5/8” tubing which should definitely help your flow of exhaust. In addition we’re also looking at laser cut flanges, as well as pre-welded bungs for your O2 sensor as well as your EGR. One thing I did want to point out with these headers that I noticed right away, was that BBK included a notch for the steering shaft, to prevent any rubbing or any interference. This is huge because some other header companies do not offer this, and therefore you might run into some fitment issues. Finally BBK gives you the option of picking these long tubes up in a chrome finish, or for a few bucks more you can opt for the ceramic coating. That ceramic coating is going to offer a couple of different benefits, first, performance, ceramic dissipates heat a little better than a stainless header, so it’s going to be slightly better performance wise and it’s going to be slightly better at reducing under hood temperatures, which is always a good thing. In addition that ceramic coating is also going to be better at reducing corrosion, which is only going to increase the longevity of the header itself. The final difference is appearance, both of these header options will offer their own unique look as they age. First up, we have the ceramics, they’re going to stay this bright silver color pretty much their entire life, on the other hand we have the chrome version, which as they heat cycle, tend to turn a dark blue/purple color which some people might like, others may not. Installing any set of long tubes can be a little intense, so if you don’t think you have the mechanical skill, or the tools to get this one done, I’d leave this job in the hands of the professionals. However if you are going to do the install yourself, just leave a full day to get everything bolted up properly, just to be safe. Keep in mind, whenever you install a set of long tubes, you will need to address your Mid Pipe. In this case in order to run these long tubes from BBK, you will need to run a flanged and shorty Mid Pipe. BBK recommends their shorty H-Pipe just for the best fitment and gains. So if you’re looking for a set of long tubes for your 96-04 GT, with the option of going for a ceramic or chrome finish, then be sure to check out these long tubes from BBK right here at

More Horsepower and Torque. Improve the performance of your SOHC 4.6L Mustang GT with a set of BBK Long Tube Headers. These BBK ceramic coated headers will greatly improve your Mustangs exhaust flow over the restrictive stock cast iron manifolds and increase your Pony's horsepower and torque. Increases of up to 22 RWHP have been seen when installed with a BBK shorty H-pipe.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduce under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

Quality BBK Construction. BBK Long Tube Exhaust headers are manufactured from 1 5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. And feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished silver ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a Bama custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Application. These Ceramic Long Tube Headers are designed to fit the coupe and convertible, manual transmission 1996 to 2004 GT Mustangs. BBK long tube headers require a flanged end shorty midpipe in order to function properly. BBK recommends using a BBK shorty Mid-Pipe for the best performance gains (see drop down option above).

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only. An O2 Sensor Extension Kit and BBK shorty Mid Pipe are required for installation.

clearance issue ? Will i have a clearance issue if i used H&R Spring and it dropped about 2 inches in the front and 1.5 in the back? Will the headers be hitting the ground everytime there is a pot hole ???

  • I have H&R Race Springs on my '01 Cobra with the BBK long tube headers and do not have any unusual issues with clearance under normal driving. Speed bumps will slow you down but hat is about the extent of it.

I seen all the headers y'all offer and i didnt see any saying it fits the 2004 mach 1. Does it fit the 2004 mach 1? With manual transmission. And thanks

  • Unfortunately, these BBK 1-5/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers will not fit a 2004 Mach 1. To see our selection of long tube headers that fit an 04 Mach 1, please follow the link below!

I have a 2003 GT that was an auto, but I put the motor and manual transmission in it from my 2002 GT, do you think these headers would work?

  • If your Mustang is using a manual transmission then the BBK 1-5/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers will have no issues fitting.

I know it says manual but could you make them work for a automatic?

  • These will not work for an automatic as the headers will interfere with the steering shaft.

hi i want to buy these headers and a matching catted x pipe.. are the o2 extenders necessary? and what if i cant get my car tuned right away will it hurt it in any way?.

  • Hey Chuck, The o2 sensor extensions are necessary to complete the installation, as well as the tune. Your car will run rich/lean with out a tune which does harm the vehicle and must get it properly tuned to adjust for the power and flow of pressure.

    Not that Hard

These are a great addition to the mustang and sound great. A lot of people will tell you they are hard as crap to install and they can be difficult. The easiest way to install without using a lift is to jack the car up, take the wheels off, brake caliber and roders, and then take the springs out. After this undo the 8 bolts that hold the K member in and drop the K. Once you drop the K installing the headers is a breeze except for like 3 bolts that you are going to need a swivel to get to.

    BBK Longtube Headers

These headers sounds amazing. I currently have these installed with a bbk o/r h pipe and bassani catback. I couldnt be happier with the way it turned out. I will say the instructions for these are terrible.. they dont tell you that you will need O2 extension wires, you need to remove and bend the dipstick around the headers and 2 of the header bolts dont fit so u will need to buy shorter bolts.. but the product is awesome and completely worth it in the end.

    Great looks and performance

The pipes look great in the car. They stand out as soon as you open the hood, and are easily seen from the front wheel well. Looks awesome! Performance wise, it definitely pulls much harder up top than it used to. These headers with a BBK catted H & Borla (non-stinger) catback is not loud. I am going to probably opt for a Pypes ORH...

    Long Tube headers

A bit tricky to put in, but they look awesome and sound great plus gives noticeable power improvement. Easier when installed with a flexible oil dipstick as the stock one is not able to fit between header tubes.

    Awesome sound

I got these installed with an off road bbk h-pipe and slp loudmouth 2 catback. The sound changing from the catted x-pipe and stock headers is amazing. After around 2.5k rpm the car opens up alot and has a very loud and deep growl. Best investment yet!!!

    Sounds awesome

I matched these with a BBK off-road X-pipe in my 96 GT and I feel a major difference in power. Its also very loud, even with my stock catback. It will cost a pretty penny to get these installed, but it was totally worth it!!!! People tell me they can hear my car from blocks away now!

These things look awesome under the hood/under the car. Really gives the car a nice sound as well, not to mention the nice HP boost you get to the wheels. Worth every penny if you are going to go with full length headers. Won\'t be disappointed.

    Long Tubes & H-Pipe on \'99

I recently ordered these Long Tubes for my \'99 35th Anniversary Edition GT. They were extremely hard to put in (took 8 hours), because the \'99 & \'00 engines are much wider than the \'01-04 models. Once I got them in though It was fully worth it. 100% better sound, better boost! Don\'t miss out!

    Good headers

LoL, 04 ecoboost..... These headers are good, work well for me. I have them on this and my 96 supercharged GT. Hard to say how long it takes because I ripped the engine out to rebuild and add boost, but easier to take k-member down a bit.

    This One Counts !!!

There are a pile of "bolt on" parts out there. Of course, all of them come with the manufacture's estimate of all the extra horses, torque and or gas mileage you are going to get. I have done a pile of upgrades on my 2001 4.6 GT including the obligatory cold air kit, top of the line suspension package, strut tower brace, fat 315’s in the rear, platinum plugs, coil overs, etc... Thus far, there have been only two upgrades that actually turned my Mustang into a *different car*. The first being full length welded on sub frame connectors. The second was this set of BBK long tube headers. Not only does it sound magnificent, but there is a REAL noticeable increase in horses and torque. Who knows what the real gain is, but for once, it is a gain you can feel. You'll sped a nice buck having long tube headers put on a 2001 4.6, but if you have the $$$ and want a bolt on upgrade that will give you a REAL gain at no compromise to anything but your wallet, this is the one to go for.

Pain to Install but Worth It!!

I decided to install these with a friend's help since he had a lift. If I had to do it again I would pay a shop to install these since they are a pain to install! No issues with fitment, these bolted on without any problems. Once I got these on and added the BBK shorty h-pipe-WOW!! Not only a nice sound but you really notice a difference in performance. One of the most rewarding mods I have done.

    Beasty Sound!!

These headers are a great addition to ur mustang. Although they are really hard to install they are really worth it. After i installed them i made a sound test without the x pipe and it sounded great, it also sounds really beasty with the offroad x pipe. so if you are going to buy some headers go with the BBK LT Headers totally recomend it!!

    Great Addition

These headers are a mixed blessing. They are a GREAT performance addition and add a LOT to the deep throaty sound, but are miserable to install. I honestly don't recommend this installation to a novice. If you aren't a mechanic and don't have access to a hoist, pay to have someone install them for you. But, do install them!! They're awesome!!

    BUY THESE NOW!!!!!!

I cant believe the power i have gained with the long tube headers!!!!!!! Not only in take off but the highway responce is amazing!!! It was a pain to install....i would recomend anyone to just suspend the engine and drop the much easier that way.... shaves 4-5 hours off of messing around with everything. I love the sound of the bbk header. the H-pipe was slightly off center but a easy fix. If you are trying to get all the hp out of your mustang go straight for these BBk long tube header!!
