      Review & Installation Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of BBK’s long tube headers, available in your choice of either ceramic, or chrome, fitting the 1996-2004 manual Mustang GT. Long tube headers are one of those mods on the long list of basic bolt ons, that aim to make more power than the factory part they’re replacing. In this case, these long tube headers from BBK are going to replace the ultra restrictive cast iron factory manifolds, which are notorious for choking out the flow of exhaust. Taking a closer look at the headers themselves, you’ll see BBK went with mandrel bent 1-5/8” tubing which should definitely help your flow of exhaust. In addition we’re also looking at laser cut flanges, as well as pre-welded bungs for your O2 sensor as well as your EGR. One thing I did want to point out with these headers that I noticed right away, was that BBK included a notch for the steering shaft, to prevent any rubbing or any interference. This is huge because some other header companies do not offer this, and therefore you might run into some fitment issues. Finally BBK gives you the option of picking these long tubes up in a chrome finish, or for a few bucks more you can opt for the ceramic coating. That ceramic coating is going to offer a couple of different benefits, first, performance, ceramic dissipates heat a little better than a stainless header, so it’s going to be slightly better performance wise and it’s going to be slightly better at reducing under hood temperatures, which is always a good thing. In addition that ceramic coating is also going to be better at reducing corrosion, which is only going to increase the longevity of the header itself. The final difference is appearance, both of these header options will offer their own unique look as they age. First up, we have the ceramics, they’re going to stay this bright silver color pretty much their entire life, on the other hand we have the chrome version, which as they heat cycle, tend to turn a dark blue/purple color which some people might like, others may not. Installing any set of long tubes can be a little intense, so if you don’t think you have the mechanical skill, or the tools to get this one done, I’d leave this job in the hands of the professionals. However if you are going to do the install yourself, just leave a full day to get everything bolted up properly, just to be safe. Keep in mind, whenever you install a set of long tubes, you will need to address your Mid Pipe. In this case in order to run these long tubes from BBK, you will need to run a flanged and shorty Mid Pipe. BBK recommends their shorty H-Pipe just for the best fitment and gains. So if you’re looking for a set of long tubes for your 96-04 GT, with the option of going for a ceramic or chrome finish, then be sure to check out these long tubes from BBK right here at AmericanMuscle.com

      Description

More Horsepower and Torque. Improve the performance of your SOHC 4.6L Mustang GT with a set of BBK Long Tube Headers. These BBK ceramic coated headers will greatly improve your Mustangs exhaust flow over the restrictive stock cast iron manifolds and increase your Pony's horsepower and torque. Increases of up to 22 RWHP have been seen when installed with a BBK shorty H-pipe.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduce under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

      Quality BBK Construction.
BBK Long Tube Exhaust headers are manufactured from 1 5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. And feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished silver ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

      Application.
These Ceramic Long Tube Headers are designed to fit the coupe and convertible, manual transmission 1996 to 2004 GT Mustangs. BBK long tube headers require a flanged end shorty midpipe in order to function properly. BBK recommends using a BBK shorty Mid-Pipe for the best performance gains (see drop down option above).

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only. An O2 Sensor Extension Kit and BBK shorty Mid Pipe are required for installation.

        Fitment issues

The headers themselves fit well if you drop your K member rather then lift your motor. Fitment issues would be 1. Bolt holes on the manifold are covered up by header tubes so sliding a bolt in after you put the exhuast up to your head is impossible. You have to put the bolt in first the put it up to your head. Tightening that then bolt is super tricky and time consuming 1/4 inch every turn. 2. Would be the pre drilled holes for the bolts going into your head are not at perfect angles. So lining up your bolt with the proper angle of your head is almost impossible. 3. EGR thread angle to line up to new headers is also off you will have to re bend your ERG tube to get it to thread properly. Besides that they are super nice look at cant tell gains or true sound as I broke two head studs and had to get my car off the lift so I have an exhaust leak and that is all I can hear.

        Headers

Was probably the hardest install I've ever done I wouldn't do it again on a new Edge ever but it looks good and sounds decent. And yes there's no way getting around it you're going to have to drop the K member.

        Great add

This was absolutely a expensive time consuming pain, but I am happy with the results, the sound of the exhaust is so clean now and the air flow is huge, I can hear the air flow through the motor!! Also my car feels so much different in terms of preformance it absolutely romps now! Went with an h-pipe and magma flow exhaust

        BBK long tube headers

The BBK long tube headers installed beautifully. Due to some of the bends in the tubes a stud and bolt combo had to be used. That hardware was provided by BBK so there was no panicked run to the hardware store.

clearance issue ? Will i have a clearance issue if i used H&R Spring and it dropped about 2 inches in the front and 1.5 in the back? Will the headers be hitting the ground everytime there is a pot hole ???

      • I have H&R Race Springs on my '01 Cobra with the BBK long tube headers and do not have any unusual issues with clearance under normal driving. Speed bumps will slow you down but hat is about the extent of it.

hi i want to buy these headers and a matching catted x pipe.. are the o2 extenders necessary? and what if i cant get my car tuned right away will it hurt it in any way?.

      • Hey Chuck, The o2 sensor extensions are necessary to complete the installation, as well as the tune. Your car will run rich/lean with out a tune which does harm the vehicle and must get it properly tuned to adjust for the power and flow of pressure.

will i have issue if my car is automatic? any issue on the passenger side rubbing with the transmission?

      • The BBK 1-5/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers will not fit the automatic transmission equipped Mustangs due to the passenger side hitting the transmission. These Ceramic Long Tube Headers are designed to fit the coupe and convertible, manual transmission 1996 to 2004 GT Mustangs.

Hi I just bought these headers along with a shorty H-midpipe and the loudmouth exhaust they are currently being installed and the mechanic said I may have to get it tuned cause the rear end may throw codes? I have it on a diablo tune with 4:10 gears CAI and I also of the 02 sensor extensions, why would it still throw codes? He says it may need to be put on a dyno to be properly tuned also so it doesn't backfire when I down shift would this be true?

      • Anytime you buy long tube headers you will need to retune your vehicle to accommodate the new air flow rates of the long tubes as they change compared to shorty headers and downpipes.

Can the x pipe for shortie headers be cut down to fit these long tubes? I really dont want to have to buy a whole new mid pipe

      • Yes, you can make modifications to your existing mid-pipe to pair up with the long tube headers.
