      Video Review & Installation

The T-2 Torsen Differential from Ford Performance will be an awesome choice for any '11 to '14 V6 or '86 to '14 V8 owner looking for a diff that will really shine on those back roads or an autocross course as opposed to straight line abuse of a drag strip. Now the T-2 will be a direct fit in that solid rear 8.8 or even the IRS cars equipped with 31 spline axles and can be had for that mid-$500 price point. Diff and gear installs are not exactly fun and will not be for everyone, so therefore the site is going to kick this one up to a full three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter and at least four hours or so to get everything completed. So the name Torsion actually comes from two different words and that is torque and sensing, and basically, guys, that's going to sum up what the Torsen diff is all about. It's going to operate as an open diff when torque going to each wheel is equal. But as soon as one wheel starts to break loose, or lose grip, the diff or more specifically the internal gears within the differential bind together and at that point send up to two times the amount of torque possible to the tire with the most grip. Now compare that to the Boss 302 Laguna Seca T2 which can deliver up to 2.7 times the amount of total torque, and then finally the FR500S, the big boy, the T2R which can deliver a whopping 4 to1 torque bias which is by far and away the most aggressive of the pack here on the site and the price is certainly going to reflect that. Now again guys, these diffs really do shine on those road course cars as they are continuously responding to torque feedback which translates really to putting that power down coming out of turn. Now one big thing to keep in mind here, guys, is that the Torsen style diff is purely mechanical, meaning there's no internal clutches or preload springs like you'd find with a Trac-Lock, Detroit Locker or other more traditional limited slips. Now because of that the Torsen isn't again recommended for drag use as it never really locks both of those tires or wheels together. Of course that won't stop people from using these things on the strip, however you should just know that's not their sole purpose in life and doing so would not be taking full advantage of what the Torsen is all about.Again guys, big thing to point out, this thing will fit inside both your 8.8 solid rear axle, in addition to the IRS center section given that same year range but will again require the use of 31 splined axles and I'm looking directly at you '86 to '04 non-Cobra V8 owners out there. The T-2 is compatible with any of the 8.8 gear sets here on the site. Will take roughly three quarts of fluid, 75/90 will be good for most owners in addition to that four ounce bottle of friction modifier from Ford. Now colder temperature cars or heavy track day cars might want step that gear oil up to a 75/140 but that's totally your call at the end of the day. Regardless, don't forget that bottle of friction modifier. Install will not be for the novice mechanics out there as it usually correlates with a gear install or setup, so therefore expect a full three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter and at least four hours according to the site to get everything knocked out. Probably a little bit more if this is your first time doing it. And as always, never a bad idea to snag a new rear end install kit before tackling this job. But wrapping things up here guys, if you're really looking to help improve the handling in your Mustang and put that power down on your corner exit, be sure to check out the Torsen T-2 Differential right here at americanmuscle.com.
