    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey everyone, Dave from AmericanMuscle, and today I have the K&N cold air intake kit, designed to fit the 99-04 Mustang V6. Now this kit fits both the 3.8 and the 3.9L and from K&N, you’re going to get a high flow reusable filter, surrounded by a heat shield to help keep out engine heat and exhaust heat making the air cooler and more dense to make you more power. After it flows through the filter you’re then going to notice the sleek black plastic tube, that comes with all the accessories and hardware you need for a quick at home installation. This kit is going to flow a ton more air and with the reusable filter actually save you money over time. So what we’re going to do today before we install it, is take our automatic V6 on the dyno, and get some baseline numbers, so when we install this kit, we can see what sort of performance gains we pick up. Our 2000 automatic V6 made 145 horse power and 170 ft/lbs of torque. Now our stock dyno runs are out of the way, we’re going to go ahead and uninstall the factory unit and reinstall the K&N cold air intake kit. It comes with all the supplied hardware you need and should take us about an hour. Now that our K&N cold air intake kit is installed we’re going to load up our 93 octane bama performance tune so when we run it back on the dyno again, we can see what kind of gains we picked up. A custom tune from bama performance adjusts engine parameters to maximize performance, through optimized air/fuel ratio, spark advance, enhanced throttle response ,and for automatics, increased shift firmness and adjustable shift points. Our car produced 155 horse power and 183 ft/lbs of torque with our K&N intake and our bama tune installed, that’s a gain of 10 horse power, and 15 ft/lbs of torque throughout our curve. It took us less than an hour with all the supplied couplers and hardware that K&N supplied to install the new cold air intake kit, the way it mounts under the hood allows you to hear, and see a lot of benefits from installing the kit. When we re-ran it on the dyno after we installed it and we used our bama tune, we produced 10 more horse power and 15 more ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve.

Improves Horsepower. The K&N "Fuel Injection Performance Kit" (FIPK for short) Air Intake Kit completely replaces your stock 1999-2004 3.8L & 3.9L V6 Mustang's restrictive factory air box and paper filter. This FIPK Cold Air Intake features a high flow K&N filter assembly and intake tube for a noticeable increase in horsepower and acceleration, all while still providing excellent filtration.

Filters Harmful Contaminants. The supplied K&N Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with its unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Straight Forward Installation. With commonly available basic hand tools, the K&N FIPK CAI requires no extra modifications for a simple, straight forward installation.

Application. This K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake is specifically designed for use on 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustangs.

does this cai give more horsepower than the BBK Cold Air Intake when they are both tuned? also will it fit on a v8 engine

    JrTroopa006

    • The K&N Series 57 FIPK Cold Air Intake will not fit V8 Cars, as it is specifically designed for the V6. Power gains between this and the BBK Cold Air Intake will be similar, however the K&N will make slightly more power when the engine is hot.

    JrTroopa006

    • The K&N Series 57 FIPK Cold Air Intake and BBK Cold Air Intake will perform nearly identically, however the K&N will produce slightly more hp when the engine is hot, due to its plastic construction.

Not really a cold air intake

Not sure why everybody’s stressing how worth the money this thing is. Its just a short cheap feeling plastic tube, and honestly is it even a cold air intake? Its sucking air from the engine bay. Our stock intakes suck from outside, so if anything think of it as a hot air intake. That being said, its got monster air flow. Fatty cone, and good luck ever replacing the couplings, the diameter is insane. You can hear the suck from punching the gas inside the car with the windows up. I wouldnt even care if it made no performance gains, the sucking noice alone would be worth the time to install. Idk if I would’ve paid that price, I got mine for free. I’d rather spend the money towards a tuner and pick up a cheap intake that pulls air from outside the engine bay. Fatty cone though, this filters big.

      Awesome

First mod under the hood and it was a success. I immediately hear the difference in sound and throttle response. She sounds a lot closer to a v8 comparing with the Mac dual exhaust kit from AM. Happy with my order.

      Great intake

Noticeable gain in power, I love the sound at high RPMS. It even sounds good while the car is parked, you can hear the intake sucking in air! The only problem I ran into was attaching the bracket to the A/C compressor, other than that, great intake!

All and all very happy with the purchase and would recommend this intake to anyone looking for an upgrade.

      Pricey, but worth it

I had originally purchased the SR Performance intake sold here, and it worked fine up until I purchased a Torque Spacer. This KandN intake is shaped in such a way that it will accommodate the extra space needed for that spacer, and still fit in the engine bay with no modification. The construction quality is second to none, and you cant beat the sound it makes when your driving the car. It really helped open up the engine over the factory and SR Performance air boxes. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good starting point in the performance world.

      Reduced nosedive on acceleration

Before this intake I was on the stock air intake and I noticed the car would give me a nosedive before taking off after getting this under the hood, when I step on it it's a much more smooth take off almost got rid of the nose dive. I also noticed I get better gas mileage. !

This was a good after market air intake, the only thing I would say that it did to my car is make it sound tougher, it does give me better gas mileage which I was looking for.. If you are looking for more horsepower, I would get the SR. Other than that the KandN automaker is awesome.

      I LOVE IT

Installed this the other night on my 2002 v6 3.8L, and from the get-go I was impressed with the size of filter and how great it looked. Literally largest air filter I've seen. In addition with the slightest pull of the throttle it gives a nice whistle. Overall performance is acceptable and noticeable without a tune (but I do plan on getting it tuned) What more can I say, I love this intake totally worth the few extra bucks for KandN quality. P.S. I installed with bbk 65mm throttle body, much better power gains
