Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey everyone, Dave from AmericanMuscle, and today I have the K&N cold air intake kit, designed to fit the 99-04 Mustang V6. Now this kit fits both the 3.8 and the 3.9L and from K&N, you’re going to get a high flow reusable filter, surrounded by a heat shield to help keep out engine heat and exhaust heat making the air cooler and more dense to make you more power. After it flows through the filter you’re then going to notice the sleek black plastic tube, that comes with all the accessories and hardware you need for a quick at home installation. This kit is going to flow a ton more air and with the reusable filter actually save you money over time. So what we’re going to do today before we install it, is take our automatic V6 on the dyno, and get some baseline numbers, so when we install this kit, we can see what sort of performance gains we pick up. Our 2000 automatic V6 made 145 horse power and 170 ft/lbs of torque. Now our stock dyno runs are out of the way, we’re going to go ahead and uninstall the factory unit and reinstall the K&N cold air intake kit. It comes with all the supplied hardware you need and should take us about an hour. Now that our K&N cold air intake kit is installed we’re going to load up our 93 octane bama performance tune so when we run it back on the dyno again, we can see what kind of gains we picked up. A custom tune from bama performance adjusts engine parameters to maximize performance, through optimized air/fuel ratio, spark advance, enhanced throttle response ,and for automatics, increased shift firmness and adjustable shift points. Our car produced 155 horse power and 183 ft/lbs of torque with our K&N intake and our bama tune installed, that’s a gain of 10 horse power, and 15 ft/lbs of torque throughout our curve. It took us less than an hour with all the supplied couplers and hardware that K&N supplied to install the new cold air intake kit, the way it mounts under the hood allows you to hear, and see a lot of benefits from installing the kit. When we re-ran it on the dyno after we installed it and we used our bama tune, we produced 10 more horse power and 15 more ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve.

Improves Horsepower. The K&N "Fuel Injection Performance Kit" (FIPK for short) Air Intake Kit completely replaces your stock 1999-2004 3.8L & 3.9L V6 Mustang's restrictive factory air box and paper filter. This FIPK Cold Air Intake features a high flow K&N filter assembly and intake tube for a noticeable increase in horsepower and acceleration, all while still providing excellent filtration.

Filters Harmful Contaminants. The supplied K&N Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with its unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Straight Forward Installation. With commonly available basic hand tools, the K&N FIPK CAI requires no extra modifications for a simple, straight forward installation.

Application. This K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake is specifically designed for use on 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustangs.

  • This K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake (MPN 57-2532) is specific to 1999-2004 V6 Mustangs. The K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake (MPN 57-2550) is designed for the 1997-2003 V6 F150's, so the intake that you currently have for your Mustang will not be compatible with the F150's.

Will this CAI accommodate the Poweraid Torque Spacer? I have had issues clearing the strut mount with my current intake.

  • The K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake (99-04 3.8L & 3.9L V6) will accommodate the Airaid Poweraid Throttle Body Spacer (99-01 V6) part number 52215. As long as you have a factory throttle body this spacer will match up with any intake.

I have a 03-04 cobra hood on my mustang. Should have to worry about water getting onto the filter in the rain?

  • The 03-04 heat exchange hood will have functional vents which will allow some water to go through them. I would recommend keeping an eye on the filter during heavy rain.

    Well Worth It

I have a 40th Aniv. Mustang V6, so naturally I wanted a V8 and figured this would help me on my way to getting close. It deff added a big increase of horsepower and my car sounds much deeper. The whistle of course is always a nice touch too. Only problem i have with it is that it makes the car really jumpy at times when you let off the gas and stay at an inbetween speed. But overall well worth it and a great part to choose. Thanks AM.

    K&N CAI for 99-04 V6

I've had the CAI on my 2004 3.9L V6 since Sept 2009. I noticed an immediant difference in response, sound, and efficency. I went from 27mpg to 29mpg.

    worth the money

i took a while to decide on and intake, but ended up going for the K&N. so glad i did, when you make quick shifts and floor it at high revs you can really hear it suck in the cold air in and whistle. Install was relatively easy, took me 2 hours but i didn't want to mess anything up. Don't waste your time with the others, just go for the best.

    It works

Bought this for my 04 Mustang. I run the 3.9L/238, not the 3.8L you comminly see. Took bout an hour and ahalf. Definately see a difference. Enigine sounds more like a v-8 and will get up and go. The only thing is this is built with tight tollerances.

    High quality intake

Wow, how cool! Fits my 2001 V6 like a glove. I noticed a slight gain in power, nothing too big. You can hear a sucking sound inside the car when you step on the gas, but the sound is nothing to rave about. BUT, hard revs in neutral produce a very cool sound, similar to a turbo. A little expensive, but you pay for a good product. K&N says it's a 6.something HP gain. So four stars for price/HP ratio.

    Not CARB Legal for 3.9L

I had to remove mine after trying to get it to pass CA smog. The guy insisted that even though the 3.8L and 3.9L are almost identical, and they have the same part number stock exhaust manifold part numbers, that because K&N did not certify it for the 3.9L it was not legal. CA Stangs BE FOREWARNED. Other than that, it fit well, was easy to install and produced descent gains.

    Great intake

I've had this intake on my '01 V6 for a while now and it is an awesome intake. My first drive after installation I could hear a very different, almost sucking type of sound when I got on the throttle, very deep and loud. The extra power was noticeable as well, not a gigantic amount, but noticeable. I also agree with Dakota's review: at times the car will act herky jerky when I cruise along at certain low speeds. It seems to happen the most in 4th gear (manual) around 30 to 38 mph. It doesn't seem to happen all the time, but enough that it can get annoying. That is my only drawback to this intake. Other than that, I highly recommend the K&N system.

    in the trash

ill admit this kit has made the car run so much better but i had to modify it alot to fit like it should. the intake tube hit the shock tower i had to bend the air compressor bracket and the air filter sheild. after a year of use the rubber seal on the filter sheild fell off and i had to glue it back on. this thing is going in the trash

    great addition

With so many CAIs to choose from I asked my mechanic buddy and he said go with the K&N. The video instruction is for the BBK CAI, so follow the instructions that come with the kit. Easy enough to follow. The CAI gave a notable increase with my magnaflow set up and of course the aggressive hiss noise.

    Great product!

First off let me just say wow! I bought this along with the 65mm throttle body and installed them at the same time. Together it took me about 2 hours to intsall. Getting the k&n pipe in was a bit diffucult for me, i had to use some strength to get in on right! i was afraid i was going to break it from pushing it so hard. It seem as if one of the pipes were directly in the way. The pipe went along next to the strut tower and i feel that if that pipe wasnt there it would have been a 5 star fit. I noticed the difference right away! When i get the rpm's around 2k theres a whistle then over that you can just hear it sucking in the air feircely! First mods for me, Worth it!
