Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my detailed review of the Pypes Catback Exhaust system with X-Box, available for your 2015 and newer Fastback GT with your choice of either polished or black tips. You should be checking out the Pypes Catback option for your S550 GT if you're looking for a super affordable system that's gonna fall well beneath that $1000 price point, one that's gonna offer a unique design and sound thanks to the mid-muffler design here, and finally one that's gonna offer some quality materials despite that low price point thanks to the 304 grade stainless. But since this is an exhaust, after all, let's talk quickly about what kind of sound you can expect when using the X-Box version of the Pypes Catback. Now, again, guys, Pypes has essentially created one of the only mid-muffler style exhaust systems here for the S550 GT. Very unique and it should produce a slightly different tone compared to a majority of the other aftermarket catbacks out there that will place the mufflers closer to the rear of the car. Now as you guys heard with the sound clips earlier in this video, this thing's gonna deliver some very solid tone, maybe a little bit more rasp than their H-Box system from Pypes, which is also available here on the site. Overall, guys, a healthy four out of five on my one to five or one to wake the neighbors scale. You're definitely getting some good volume with this system, so if that's what you're after, the Pypes will not disappoint you there. In fact, guys, I'm even willing to take that a step further and say this might be one of the loudest catbacks available at this price point. And speaking of that price point, guys, the price is definitely going to be one of the big pros when checking out a Pypes catback for your new S550 GT. If you're a little bit more familiar with the Pypes brand, you probably know they're more of an entry-level system and they're going to be one of your more affordable options when it comes to your Mustang, and that certainly hasn't changed here with their S550 offerings. In fact, the Pypes system will come in right around the $800 price point, which will make it one of the most affordable currently on the site at this time, with only the Gibson systems and the MBRP being slightly less. But you have to keep in mind what you are getting here, guys. You're getting that quality 304 grade stainless steel and, in fact, nobody's giving you that 304 stainless at this price point. The closest option you have is the Stainless Works's catback and that's still gonna cost you a couple hundred more bucks than the Pypes. So, overall, keep in mind, this is the big plus with this Pypes catback. You're getting these premium materials but for a very budget-friendly price. So why is this such a big deal? Well, that 304 grade stainless is the benchmark when it comes to materials for aftermarket catback systems for your new Mustang. Now, it's gonna be the best at reducing corrosion and besides tone, this is what you really should be shopping for when looking for that new catback. Especially, guys, if you live in the North and see a lot of salt during the winter months or maybe if you live close to a coast and see a lot of salt off the ocean. This is the kind of stuff that would otherwise rust an aluminized steel version or maybe even 409 to a lesser extent. All right, materials aside, let's dive a little deeper here with the Pypes catback. Overall guys, again, 304 grade stainless steel throughout, three-inch mandrel bent tubing pretty much from tip to tip here, including the X-Box style crossover pipe. You will find twin M-80 bullet style mufflers, a Pypes' trademark, they are straight through by design here, very free flowing, all exiting out the large four-inch polished tips, etched with the Pypes logo. Again, guys, Pypes does offer the same catback with a black tip instead. You can grab on the site. Gonna cost you a few bucks more, but not by much. Now even though it's really hard to tell from the outside, but this system and its sound are going to be shaped by the included X-Box here, which is very similar to what you would find with a traditional X-Pipe. Basically, if we were to cut the top off of this thing, you'd see an x-style crossover right in here and that's going to attribute to slightly bigger top-end gains, maybe raise the pitch of the exhaust slightly, and give you just a small touch of rasp. As far as the install is concerned here, guys, well nothing too crazy as is the case usually when talking about S550 catback installs. Using nothing more than a basic socket set or impact, you're gonna want to remove the two clamps securing the factory exhaust system and drop it from the car. Now keep in mind, guys, this factory catback is all one piece, can be a little tough to muscle around by yourself so if you do have an extra set of hands, this would be a great time to use them. Getting that new Pypes system in place is very straightforward and requires the use of the same tools we just talked about. I would recommend starting closest to the engine and then work your way back from there. Basically getting each section in place as you go but save your final tighten up to the very end because you wanna make sure those tips are perfectly aligned and you wanna make sure everything is looking good underneath the car. Overall, guys, again, nothing crazy here. One out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter, maybe an hour or two in the garage or driveway before you're making some noise. Wrapping this one up, guys, there's a lot to like about the Pypes catback system for your S550 GT. The overall sound and volume are pretty killer, but you have to keep in mind you're getting a premium build here for an entry level price. So that's my review of the Pypes Catback Exhaust System with X-Box, which you can find right here, at AmericanMuscle.com.

Rich Muscle Car Sound. A Pypes Cat-Back Exhaust System will add a deep rich muscle car sound to your 2015-2017 5.0L GT Mustang with absolutely no resonance or drone. This powerful sound is achieved with the help of a pair of M80 bullet mufflers and Pypes X-Box Mid Pipe that replaces the factory resonator.

Better Flow for More Power. Pypes designed their Cat-Back to significantly improve the exhaust flow of your 2015-2017 5.0L Mustang. By replacing the factory 2.5" piping with larger diameter 3” mandrel bent piping, a pair of straight-through bullet mufflers and Pypes unique X-Box Mid Pipe you will see a noticeable increase in rear wheel horsepower and torque.

M80 Bullet Mufflers. Pypes M80 Bullet Mufflers feature a high-flow straight-through design. Engineered with a layer of stainless mesh around a unique internally louvered core and a lining of basalt insulation, these M80 Mufflers will improve exhaust flow for more power and sound.

X-Box Mid-Pipe. Designed to eliminate the restrictive factory resonator the X-Box Mid-Pipe improves exhaust flow when compared to traditional H and X Mid Pipes. The combination of the X-Box and the mid-muffler design helps accelerate the exiting exhaust to create significant rear wheel power gains.

Quality Construction. Pypes Cat-Back Exhausts are manufactured from high quality 304 stainless steel piping for strength and excellent corrosion resistance. All Pypes Exhaust Systems feature smooth mandrel bent tubing to eliminate any power robbing kinks. Complete with a set of brightly polished 304 stainless steel 4" tips, this Cat-Back also adds bold muscle car styling to your Mustang.

Direct Fit Upgrade. Pypes Mustang Cat-Back with X-Box Mid Pipe bolts straight up to the stock OEM location with no modifications required for installation. Making this Cat-Back a direct fit bolt-on replacement upgrade.

Application. This Pypes Cat-Back Exhaust System with X-Box Mid-Pipe and Polished Tips is designed to fit the 2015-2017 GT Fastback Mustangs equipped with either aftermarket shorty headers or the stock manifolds reusing the factory catalytic converters. Not compatible with convertible models.

Fantastic Muscle Car Tone but High Resonance

I have a 2016 Deep Impact Blue Automatic GT. This is the first mod I have made to my car. The exhaust system looks really good. Very solid and light especially compared to the stock exhaust system. The pipes look great and the stainless steel tips look amazing and they're big for being 4 inches. Installation was cumbersome though. It took 2 and half hours to do. I had a friend help me out with the installation and we were lucky enough to get a lift so we didn't have to use jack stands. We tried to align the system the best we could after removing the stock system but in the end the passenger over-axle and axle-back pipes are raised a little higher than the driver's side. We were able to align the tips to be in the middle of the cut outs and centered. There's no parts of the exhaust touching the gas tank or the IRS. It sound so fantastic when you turn it on. That deep rumble when the engine fires up compared to the stock exhaust. It's the perfect exhaust note I was looking for especially when you start cruising...only if you can start cruising. There's a large drone and resonance issue when I reach up the 1750 to 2000 RPM range where it starts to get really bad. It's bad that it causes the cabin to vibrate especially on 6th gear when you're cruising at 2000 RPM. You can hit that drone on any gear at a specific RPM but its most obvious then. If you want that great deep muscle car tone then this cat-back delivers exceptionally but expect to deal with drone and resonance.

Fantastic Muscle Car Tone but High Resonance

I have a 2016 Deep Impact Blue Automatic Mustang GT and this was the first mod I performed on my car. The exhaust system looks great. It feels really light compared to the stock exhaust and really solid. That being said installing the exhaust system was more cumbersome than imagined. A friend of mine and I worked to get this exhaust installed on my GT. We were lucky to borrow a lift from another friend in order to make it easy for us. We ran into issues trying to adjust the exhaust system and straighten it out. At the end the passenger side over-axle pipe and axle-back pipe is a little higher than the driver's side. I was able to get the axle-back pipe adjusted so the exhaust tip would be in the middle. It looks fantastic especially with the Pypes logo etched to the sides. Also nothing is touching the gas tank or the IRS axle so there is plenty of clearance. Oh the exhaust note when you hear the car turn on. It's exactly the muscle car tone I was looking for compared to the other exhaust systems I heard. It felt perfect and complimented the Mustang. It's loud but not obnoxious compared to other exhaust systems. It will get loud when you push it but low and deep when cruising...that is if I could stay at a cruising speed. Turns out that this system resonates at a high tone around 1750 RPM to 2100 RPM. You hit that high pitch vibration and noise at 2000 RPM and it drones below it like a low helicopter hum. I would need to drive below 1750 RPM or go over 2200 RPMs in order to get past it but I can't drive like that all the time. I live in a big city so driving fast isn't always the recommended action so don't be like "Oh I'll just drive past that RPM or put the music up." No. You can't make excuses for that especially when in the description they state no drone or resonance. Is it the same for other GTs (or Ecoboost as one person used the system on)? I'm not sure but for me it drones and it resonates loud. I can't be on my normal cruising speed when I had my stock exhaust system on. The drone and resonance seems to be coming from the trunk so it can be the over-axle and axle back pipes but the resonance is noticeable outside when you rev to that point. If you can deal with a high pitch resonance sound and drone then this system is fantastic especially if you want that rich deep classic muscle car tone. I recommend it for that but be aware of what you gotta do to bare with it. I'm rather disappointed with that and I guess I'm gonna have to find another exhaust system that I can live with.
