Review & Install Video
Justin: The Roush Axle-Back Exhaust with the black tips here is an exclusive system to americanmuscle.com that should appeal to the 2015 through '17 GT owners who want one of the loudest and most popular axle-backs available for their ride. Now, interested S550 owners can look forward to a mix of both 409 and 304 grade stainless, complete with those black tips for right around that high $500 price point. Install on the other hand, is gonna get a soft two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter according to the site and about an hour or so to complete. Small amount of cutting involved here but if you hang with me for a little bit, guys, we'll show you how it's done a little later in the video. So the original Roush Axle-Back, guys, is easily one of the most popular systems for the Coyote powered GT with well over 100 five-star reviews from a lot of happy customers. Now, a big reason for the popularity here at the Roush system in particular is the combination of the loud and unique tone, of course, but with that relatively affordable price tag when compared to a majority of your other offerings here in the category. And now that same recipe is also available for owners who prefer a black tip as opposed to a more traditional polished option. Let's not waste any more time.
Let's just jump right into that signature Roush tone you guys heard at the very top of this video and listen, if you'll want plenty of volume, the Roush will certainly not disappoint. So, going to my patented in official wake the neighbors scale, I have the Roush coming in at a very healthy four out of five here which is pretty much as loud as you're gonna get or at least as high as you're gonna get on that scale with an axle-back. You have to keep in mind here, guys, that this is still with that factory resonator in place. Remove that in favor of an aftermarket X or H-pipe or Lord help you, throw in some long tubes and you will officially reach the wake the dead scale. I mean this thing is extraordinarily loud, guys, once you start factoring in some supporting modifications. Let's switch inside the car because, yes, there is some volume there. Not terribly boomy per se but it's certainly not gonna be one of the most quiet exhausts out there from an interior standpoint. So, if you're bothered by some interior noise, this one might, kinda, get on your nerves after a few hours in the car on a long road trip but if you want loud, you don't care about any interior noise, well, this is certainly going to be one of the best bets out there. So just how does Roush achieve this very unique and earth-shattering tone?
Well, the start of the system, no doubt, guys, will be the unique hollow chambered mufflers as Roush calls them that will allow for all of that volume but without the use of any internal packing. So, you're not gonna have to worry about that sound changing on you over the years. Construction-wise, again, you are getting that mix of 409 grade stainless, I'd say, for a majority of the system here. While Roush does incorporate a very small amount of 304 grade stainless for those tips themselves which, again, have been finished in the unique high temp flat black coating. But switching gears, let's talk about the install briefly and again, if you're not familiar, axle-backs on the S550 do involve a small amount of cutting. So, just be prepared with your Sawzall or cutting tool of choice. However, to give you a better idea, here's a detailed walkthrough we promised you a little bit earlier along with the quick little tool breakdown.
Man: Tools required with this installation: a 3/8 drive with an extension, 15-millimeter socket, a 13-millimeter socket if you are taking your exhaust off, a Sawzall to cut your mufflers off. Always wear your eye protection and optional Z impact. So to get your Roush axle-back exhaust installed, you actually do not have to remove your whole exhaust. You are gonna have to make a couple of cuts right here and right here. However, we have to return our vehicle back to stock. So, I'm actually going to drop this down and put up a pre-cut exhaust. All right. So, as you can see, we have our cut exhaust up. We are going to slide our clamp on first. Bring that up. We're going to bring our muffler into place, put it through the hanger first and then slide our pipe over just like that and then our clamp and then that's a 15-millimeter, so let me go get my impact. So we're just gonna tighten this up. Let's go ahead and get the driver side on clamped first. [inaudible 00:05:37] slide down. Hanger up here. Slide it onto our tailpipe section. There we go. Get my impact again. Tighten this down. All right. Now we're gonna put on our tips. We're gonna slide our clamp on first. Get it over our muffler. Make sure it's nice and even level. Now, I'm gonna clock this up and away so you can't see it through the bumper. All right. Now repeat those steps on the other side to get the driver's side tip in. That's gonna wrap up my install of this Roush Axle-Back with black tips for your Mustang S550. For all things Mustang, keep it here to americanmuscle.com.
