    Review & Installation Video

Hey, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my brief look into the SR Performance cold air intake kit fitting the 3.6 and 3.9L motor found in all 99-04 V6 Mustangs. This budget friendly intake sports a very popular design when it comes to the Ne

Improves Horsepower. This SR Performance V6 Mustang Cold Air Intake kit completely replaces the restrictive factory air box and paper filter element in your 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustang with a high flow filter assembly for a noticeable increase in horsepower and throttle response while filtering out harmful power robbing dust particles. This V6 CAI pulls cooler denser air from inside the inner fender well to make more power that you can feel.

Reusable Filter. Included in this kit is a SR Performance High Flow reusable air filter. So there is no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles. Just clean the filter, re-oil it, save money and go!

Powder Coated Finish. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake will not only improve horsepower and acceleration, but it will also improve your Mustang's under hood appearance with a flat black powder coated finish. Now you can have the best of both worlds - performance and style.

Simple Install. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake is relatively easy to install with only basic hand tools needed. No extra modifications are required for the installation. See the video below for an overview of the installation process.

Application. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake is designed to fit the 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustangs.

Technical Note. The Mass Airflow Housing and Sensor are not included. This kit is designed to reuse the factory unit.

Do I have to tune a new air intake? Or is it just recommended?

    • This SR CAI does not require a tune for installation. However, with any Cold Air Intake, it's recommended to get a custom tune as it will give you maximum performance from the upgrade. Hope this helps!

I see the other SR performance intake is made of aluminum with a chrome finish. Is this one aluminum with the black finish, or is it plastic? Of course my concern here is the temperature difference.

    • The SR Performance Black Cold Air Intake (99-04 V6) will be a plastic construction.

Does this include a CARB sticker for Californians?

    • Unfortunately this intake is not CARB legal at this time. It will not include a CARB sticker.

How much HP does it add if you don’t use the tuner

    • With the SR cold air intake, you'll see roughly 5-10 HP and TQ without a tune.

How much hp would I expect combined with bama tuner and catted x pipe

    • Hello! SR Performance reports an increase of 14 HP and 15 TQ. Unfortunately for an accurate assessment of how much power you would gain with the x pipe, we would need to know which one you were interested in.

      2004 Installation Challenge

I read some of the previous mixed reviews for this product and decided to take a chance. There is no way it would fit without modification. After following the directions and struggling with it for about an hour, I decided to cut 2 inches off the tube between the motor and the mass air flow piece. It still took me about 30 minutes to complete the install after shortening the pipe because it was such a tight fit. After these efforts everything seems to be good. This is not a project for a beginner.

      Great value

Everything fits in nice and tight, no need to mod anything except a longer vacuum line, about a foot and a half should do it

      Great Item. Horrible install.

I have a 1999 v6. At first i was extremely dissappointed when it was apparent that there was no way the throttle body could marry the unit for assembly. I was very frustrated since I spent 3 hours fitting the rubbers with pipes. Very sore finger and hands. I did not give up. I made it fit. It was hard. Since I forced it to fit, I sacrificied the mount to the side panel cuz it was impossible to fit with that hardware. I used old shoelaces to tie it up in the mean time, yes, shoelaces. After a week, a buddy helped me cut off some pipe, weld it back, and got rid of the shoelaces. Regarding the item, the first thing I noticed upon start up is the sound. I detected some notes specific to the v8 I adore, a sort of howl if you will. Note: no cats and resonator instead of muffler. Upon applying gas: definitely more volume and revs up quicker without any lag that I used to have. I have yet to confirm if mpg efficiency increased but definitely feel the gas pedal response instantly now. I have yet to hear the turbo like whistle many claim to have. If it is evident in WOT, I have yet to try out WOT. I applied a bit of KN filter oiler since it wasnt specified if it came oiled up. Dont want my 20 year old engine sucking up extra particles. Oh yea forgot one detail, the vaccum line is too short. I cut off a garden house in the mean time. Feels great having this thing in your car. Beware it is an installation nightmare (1999 v6). I give the item 1 star cause AM should do a better job with the fitment statements. Now I simply wont trust their statements from the beginning and might even search elsewhere for other brands.

Quality product for a great price -

Overall this SR performance cold air intake is a great product for a great price and cleans up the engine compartment significantly, but the installation was very tight against the throttle body and shock tower. The intake air suction can now be heard from the passenger front fender giving the car a more modified sound. It makes a high-velocity woosh/whistle sound at 1/4 throttle.

      Good value

Had to replace rubber coupler - would not fit over maf sensor housing. Also, hose from valve cover vent was too small. Other than those issues, unit appears well made and works great. Great deal compared to a more expensive CAI.

      No Complaints

It was a tight fit on my mustang. Took a little over an hour to squeeze it all in but I managed. Had to go to the parts store to get a plug for one of the sensors my car doesn't have but other than that a good purchase. Can feel and hear the extra power.

      V6'S BEWARE

If you have a V6 BEWARE!! Very hard to get on the rubber sleeves took about 2 hours for me to fit around Had to use a heat gun to help stretch over the pipe. also your engine has a hose connecting to it, which they Dont provide for you so I had to rig it up to make it kinda work anyways if you gonna spend money on it I wouldn't!! Save up get the bbk intake

      Super annoying but it works

First off I want to start to warn any 2004 v6 owners that you probably don't have one of the sensors for this intake and will have to find a plug. Also if you have a all stock hose on your intake, you will have to go buy a longer one because the stock one isn't long enough to reach from the engine to the intake. Overall these are the only two things that made my installation take so long due to not having everything i needed to fully install it. It did scare me at first because it didn't look like it was gonna fit, but I had to angle everything just right in order for it all to fit. So it was a bit annoying and frustrating but overall it looks good and serves its purpose.
