Review & Installation Video

Hey, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my brief look into the SR Performance cold air intake kit fitting the 3.6 and 3.9L motor found in all 99-04 V6 Mustangs. This budget friendly intake sports a very popular design when it comes to the Ne

Improves Horsepower. This SR Performance V6 Mustang Cold Air Intake kit completely replaces the restrictive factory air box and paper filter element in your 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustang with a high flow filter assembly for a noticeable increase in horsepower and throttle response while filtering out harmful power robbing dust particles. This V6 CAI pulls cooler denser air from inside the inner fender well to make more power that you can feel.

Reusable Filter. Included in this kit is a SR Performance High Flow reusable air filter. So there is no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles. Just clean the filter, re-oil it, save money and go!

Powder Coated Finish. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake will not only improve horsepower and acceleration, but it will also improve your Mustang's under hood appearance with a flat black powder coated finish. Now you can have the best of both worlds - performance and style.

Simple Install. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake is relatively easy to install with only basic hand tools needed. No extra modifications are required for the installation. See the video below for an overview of the installation process.

Application. The SR Performance Cold Air Intake is designed to fit the 1999-2004 3.8L and 3.9L V6 Mustangs.

Technical Note. The Mass Airflow Housing and Sensor are not included. This kit is designed to reuse the factory unit.

Do I have to tune a new air intake? Or is it just recommended?

mynickname

  • This SR CAI does not require a tune for installation. However, with any Cold Air Intake, it's recommended to get a custom tune as it will give you maximum performance from the upgrade. Hope this helps!

How much hp would I expect combined with bama tuner and catted x pipe

Alfredo

  • Hello! SR Performance reports an increase of 14 HP and 15 TQ. Unfortunately for an accurate assessment of how much power you would gain with the x pipe, we would need to know which one you were interested in.

    Wow

Well what can i say this is an awsome intake but there's a couple things you'll need, k well the clamps they send are good but so stiff you can barley tighten them and the cuffling for the top of the intake is to small i barely got it to fit i had to heat it up and stretch it, but once its on there it's amazing you'll feel the difference and here it it sounds awsome just regular driving.

    Cold Air Intake

Got these in June and had some issues with shipping. But American Muscle worked with the shipping company they used and sped up the process of getting me my cold air intake. Once I got it, it only took about an hour to put on (45 minutes trying to put on the filter, which was smaller than the tube). Once together, I immediately felt and heard a difference in performance. I love the new sound! I'm thrilled with this product! Just take your time and use pictures online to piece it together rather than taking a stab in the dark.

    great product

install was easy i did however had to stretch out the larger cup to fit properly, not a difficult thing to do, just heat it up with a heat gun. the performance gain is very noticeable. my acceleration is much quicker then with the stock air intake and i love the whistle it makes. overall i would highly recommend this product for you mustang.

Boy o boy, this intake man!...

Before anything else i just have to say that this intake is such a beast, the power is felt instantly and the noise that the intake makes when i switch gears sound like i have a supercharger. It took a week to get here and when i try to install it i was disappointed that the pipe that goes bolted on the mass air sensor was bend on the part were the bolt goes, i was able to bend it by overtightened the bolt but since my mass air sensor is made out of plastic i hope it doesn't crack. Also American Muscle, you might want to make the plastic couplers a little bit bigger, at least the one that connects the mass air sensor to the other pipe that goes to the engine. I wish i could have time to return it but since i had to work over the weekend i just cut the larger coupler, some people said their put their couplers in hot water but it didn't work for me, the clamps were a pain too but over all a great intake that looks good when you open the hood but too much hassle to install it.

    • Response from AmericanMuscle

I'm sorry the piping you received was defective. It definitely shouldn't have been bent and over-tightening could possibly cause a problem down the road. Please give us a call and we can get a replacement out to you right away.

    You need this

If your thinking about getting this, get it. It will make your V6 faster. Anybody can install this, just follow the instructions and take your time. Once your done, you will already hear the diffrence and feel the gained hp. I feel in love with it the first day. You can hear the air go into the engine when you start her up, sounds very nice. My check engine light came on when I installed it so I thought I did something wrong. After taking it apart 3 times, I just left it alone. Took about a week for the light to come off so I'm guessing it was getting used to the new intake. This is one of the best aftermarket part I brought from AM. Keep up the great work guys.

    Sounds freaking amazing

I put this on about three months ago and I have to say it might be the best performance part I've ordered so far. In the car at around 3000 rpms, the engine sounds like a 2012 V8 exhaust. It's definitely, louder, faster, and younger again. I swear I've saved at least $300 on gas since I put this on. Although, it doesn't quite fit the way it should to the fender. Order it now. You won't regret it.

    Great Product!

Install was pretty straight forward. It took about an hour to do. The coupler that goes on to the MAF is a little small. With a little work, it fits right on. I got a couple of additional items to finish the project just right. The existing vacuum hose wasn't long enough to fit on the intake completely so i got a new one. Plus it was older and cracking anyway. My V6 doesn't have the sensor for the extra opening so I used a 1/4" vacuum plug and put it in the hole. After installing it, its sounds and feels awesome. Great buy.

    I Can Breath

Was worth some of the hassle in installing. Hose fittings are not the size of fittings on tube and Had to cut about an inch off the throttle body tube to be able to fit together. After all this the low end response is awesome and really makes the Flowmasters Growl Look at old system and wonder how did it breath before. Throttle seems quicker to respond. Would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

    Bolt on, but...

,,,you'll need a longer valve cover to intake hose vacuum hose - the stock one is not long enough (at least in my case). No directions come with kit, so you have to jump online for the install process. Parts as listed online note that their are two step down couplers - a 3.5" to 3" and a 3" to 2.5" - the kit comes delivered with only one step down. The couplers in the kit are not as pictured - the one that goes between the AMS and the 3" pipe into the intake is much longer, which makes fitting the two pieces together more difficult (but much less likely to come apart once together). Don't get me wrong, it all comes together and the only real hassle is getting the longer hose, but the parts list and pic should reflect what really comes with the kit and there is no excuse not to include directions in the box. I recommend the kit, but wanted to make sure folks know some of the little issues. Since the other options are over 2x the price of this unit, it is still a good value.

It was a pain in the @$$ to install, nothing completely fits right. But the gain was good and it sounds good, especially at high rpms.

    Awesome v6 intake

Took longer than expected because it fits tight on the strut tower finder, not sure I'd be able to put a throttle body spacer because I don't think the intake would fit. But the way it's set up it sounds amazing when you push the gas and I can really feel the HP gain.

    very nice

this is a great first step to getting more power out of your v6. I installed this on my 03 and it gave me more power and it sounds great! my stock exhaust is deeper and you can hear it sucking in air when you put your foot down. the install was not too bad. some of the clamps could have been bigger but they worked, and the fender shield was a pain to get in place but overall not too hard
