Review & Install Video

Hey gang, Justin from AmericanMuscle.com here with a couple of Mustang throwbacks. I’m talking about these retro 5-speed shift knobs and available for all 79-04 Mustangs, Flashy chrome shift knobs weren’t all the rage back in the 60s and 70s, chances are if you owned a Mustang or Hotrod back then you would find something similar to either this white, or black knob. Both of these knobs are CNC in a single block of either black or white resin and are not painted, therefore you don’t have to worry about them chipping or fading over the years. I noticed that some of you on the site have mentioned these knobs don’t get as hot during the summer moths thanks to that resin. Installing a new shift knob has to be one of the easiest mods to tackle on your ride. Simply unscrew your factory knob, screw on the retainer nut first then install your new retro 5-speed knobs, getting everything put on shouldn’t take you any more than 5 minutes. And I’ve noticed that some of you on the site have mentioned that once you have installed your retro 5-speed knob you have a little trouble keeping that shift boot up, well I’ve got an easy fix for that and all you need for it is a roll of electrical tape. Once you’ve got your tape all you need to do is wrap it around the top of your shifter a couple times until you have created enough of a lip to keep your factory shift boot up, see, easy and quick fix to a common problem. These shift knobs are a great way to give your ride that classic retro vibe that never goes out of style all while taking it easy on your wallet, check them out.

Nostalgic Styling. Add a cool vintage touch to your modern manual pony with a Modern Billet Retro Style White Shift Knob. This shift knob features the standard 5-speed shift pattern right on top.

Quality Materials. This Shift Knob is a made from a solid white resin compound, not painted! So there is no need to worry about paint flaking off in your hand.

Simple Install. Just unscrew your old stock shift knob off and screw the new knob on, it's just like changing a light bulb.

Application. The Modern Billet Retro Style White Shift Knob is designed to fit 1979 to 2004 5-speed Manual Mustangs or Mustangs with a 12mm x 1.75 thread pattern shift handle.Note. Not compatible with 2003-2004 6-speed Cobra Mustangs.

On the fox body's I notice some have gaps between the boot and the knob. How do you get the boot to go flush against the knob?

  • Hi, To get that look you will need a shift boot retainer that sits at the base of the shift knob.

Will this fit on a tri ax shifter for my 2001 mustang?

Mata

  • The Steeda Tri-Ax Shifter is designed to accept factory knobs. So the Modern Billet Retro Style 5-Speed Shift Knob would work since it has the same thread pitch as stock.

    I'm stuck in the '70s

I just screwed on my new shift knob only hours ago on my 02 GT and I must say it feels so nice and looks great. I like the stock, because I can hold it like a pistol grip, buuut I have always loved the look of a white ball sitting on top of the shifter. I'm 22 and stuck in the '70s. I looove the classics and I love when companys make retro styled parts to add a little nostalgia to modern muscle cars. It looks great, feels great, I highly suggest this product for anyone.

    Works for me

Nice shifter knob, it gives the interior a little retro touch and fits my hand great. It is a little bigger than the picture looks, it is about the size of a Cue Ball..

    Shift knob

Really nice shift knob. I had to come up with a 3/4 inch spacer to fill in the gap under the ball. The factory shifter looks funny without something to fill in the gap between the knob and boot.

    great shift knob

the shift knb looks great.fit was just perfect.was just the right size.i heard other reviews that it was too big, well they must have awfull small hands.as far as other people saying it does not line up straight, all you have to do is hold the shift knob with 1 hand where you want it,and turn the jam nut with the other hand, whats so hard about that? also about the gap under the shift knob, all you have to do is pull the boot up high, past the shift lever, then put the shift knob on,there is no gap!

    Love it!

I have always loved the look of a white billiard on top of the shifter in a muscle car. And now I love the feel of it as well. It adds some retro look to your Pony and feels great in your hand.

    Great Looks, Value

Would have given it straight 5's if it didn't need electrical tape to keep the shifter skirt up in the proper position. Looks awesome, and feels great.

    Awesome

I love the look and feel of this shift knob. The stop nut however did not fit my stock shifter and I had to get a slightly larger one from my local hardware store. After that it was a breeze to install.

    Works great and priced better

Has a good size for me. Seems to fit my hand well, not too big or small. Also has a good weight to it. I was afraid it may be really light since it was so cheap but it is a good weight. Ive had more expensive ones for my old fox and see no difference.

    Great for the money

Just got this knob in the mail and am completely satisfied. For the money you cant beat it. Has a good weight to it, solid, not to big like others say, and it matches my exterior color perfect. No complaints.

Exactly as pictured/expected. Good quality. A bit larger than I anticipated, but very cool nonetheless. Part of an ongoing build to squeeze a 302/T-5 into an MGB. Would definitely recommend.

    happy shifting

This was my first time dealin with AM, and it wont be the last. I ordered the shift knob by phone when i saw the sale price and it was to good to pass up. Install took maby 20 min mostly becuase i used the retaining nut as a shiftboot holder to prevent the gap mentioned in alot of reviews. Feels great in my hands while shifting and looks great. I was a little nervous due to my black and tan interior but i couldent pass up 10$. And im glad i didnt. Only thing is it gets dirty very easy. Just messin around with the nut got my fingers dirty and transfered to the knob. All in all, great knob. I would buy it again in a heart beat, and AM is great and i had my order in 3 days....i love AM and its products

    Good quality

This knob is of good quality but it's huge. I'm gonna say it's as big as a cue ball. I was using a Bullitt S/S knob which is smaller and I didn't think I'd like this bigger shifter knob. I was wrong. It fits the hand perfectly. It's not expensive so I say try it out. I think you;ll be surprised how much you like it. I was.
