    Review & Install Video

This is a Barton Short Throw Shifter with a round handle for the 2005 to 2010 GTs equipped with the TR-3650. You're gonna wanna check out this shifter if you're looking for a short throw shifter upgrade that keeps a stock-like shifter handle, reuses stock shift knob for a stock look, and if you don't mind paying for the quality and the fitment that Barton delivers with its products. The install for this shifter is gonna be a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You can plan on spending about an hour getting this installed. This shifter offers a 36% reduction in throw, which is right up there with most of the other short throw shifter options but a little bit below. Most of your other options out there are giving you a 40% reduction in throw. But I honestly don't think that you guys are gonna notice the 4% difference here, especially when we're talking about this much difference over the stock shifter. A shorter throw means a shorter length between each gear that your shifter and handle have to travel. The thought here is that the shorter distance means faster shifts and better performance. But other than performance, you're also gonna get a totally different feel altogether. This different feel isn't just from the throw reduction, but it's also gonna be from the entire shifter, its construction, the throw reduction, and its bushings. This shifter is completely made from billet aluminum and stainless steel. Now it's typical to see an aftermarket shifter like this made from CNC machined aluminum where you usually see steel instead of stainless steel. This is a solid piece and it has harder poly bushings that aren't gonna allow for as much movement in the shifter. They're also more durable than the stock rubber bushings are. This is gonna give you a more solid feeling, shorter action than the stock shifter can give you. You do have some options when it comes to bushings and short throw shifters. You can go with the spherical bearing or a harder durometer poly bushing like you see in the shifter here. This is a complete kit in a sense that you're gonna get your shifter and the OEM style shift handle. You will reuse your stock shift knob or you can pick one up with the stock 12 x 1.25 thread pattern if you wanted to. When it comes to price, you can expect to pay, right about the $280 mark. This isn't your most expensive option, but there are other more affordable options out there like the SR Performance option or the Hurst Competition Plus Shifter. But the Barton here is known for its quality and fitment. So you know you're getting a good product with this shifter. But if this is a bit too pricey for you, you do have a handful of other options that you can always check out instead. As far as the install goes, this is gonna be a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You can plan on spending about an hour getting this installed. You will need a socket set to complete this install, as well as a screwdriver, of course, a jack and jack stands too or a lift if you're lucky enough to have access to one. You'll start by removing the shift boot and the retainers so you can remove the shifter. The shifter will just come up once the shift knob is out of the way. There are two screws under the boot that you'll need to remove. Then you can remove the center trim by prying on all four corners. The shifter dust cover will come off next. Then you'll move under the car. You'll need to drop the cross-member. Remove the 2 18 millimeter bolts and put the bolts back in a few threads, loosen the 2 other bolts. You'll need this space here to drop the trans a little bit. Next you'll remove the shift linkage nut and pull the linkage out of the shifter and leave it off to the side. Pull the shifter front support bolt and the rear support nuts. Remove the bracket and the clip, and then you'll be ready to pull the stock shifter out through the inside of the car. You'll swap the stock shifter for the Barton shifter and set the Barton into place. Install the linkage in the new shifter, install the new rear bracket, reinstall the front support bolt, and tighten everything down. The dust bolt will go back into place and then you'll be ready to install your handle. Once the handle is installed, you're gonna install the center trim, the shift boot, and the shift knob. That's gonna wrap things up for the Barton Short Throw Shifter for the '05 to '10 GT. And you check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

      Definite upgrade

Relatively easy install, would recommend a lift if you have access. Had to remove all transmission cross brace bolts and slightly lower transmission to remove front arm and bolt, just no clearance. Shifter is super firm and you know when you are in gear. Bye bye missing 3rd gear. Love it! Took just over an hour to install on a lift.

      Works well

The installation was a real pain. Spent 2 days trying to get a single bolt to mount lol. The performance afterward is well worth the struggle though.

      Fantastic shifter

This is the first short shifter that I have ever installed and I love it! The build quality is excellent. It feels and looks much stronger then the stock unit. The shifts do take a bit more effort then stock, but they are quick! No more rowing motion while changing gears. Also its so much easier to hit 3rd gear under hard acceleration. The handle just wants to center itself with very little effort. There's no guesswork like with the stock unit. The installation was straight forward and simple using basic hand tools. Best of all it fit my 2010 GT perfectly. The front mount is adjustable to fit the 2010. I was worried because of so many negative comments about the fit of some of the lower priced shifters on the 2010. The hardest part of the install was getting under the car. I was using low profile ramps and there wasn't much room for my 6' 2" frame that far back under the car. Probably should have used jack stands. Lol.

      Great Purchase!

This is a great product! The throw is much shorter, and the shifts feel much smoother than the stock shifter. I have had it installed for about 2 months, and I love it. I does take a little time to get it broken in, where the shifts feel extremely smooth. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone and everyone. The install was pretty simple. It only took about 30 minutes.

      BARTON SHORT THROW SHIFTER

I installed this short throw on my car in about an hour, lifting the car took the longest because of the good ol lowring kit lol. Once installed it performed very well, love the shorter throws and the way you can slam 3rd without having to guide it like the factory shifter, I would definitely recommend this for your car!!

      Beefy Barton

This shifter is obviously made by someone who loves what they do! The attention to detail, recessed bolts, overall quality is top notch. It's too bad it mounts out of sight. After installation it was much easier to get in correct gear even at high rpm. I replaced a competitors shifter that rattled and had issues with 3rd gear. This should be a factory option!

Easy Install Great Look. Makes Noise..

Was very easy to install and it looks great no large silver shinyness sticking out amongst my black leather interior. But when in 2nd 3rd or reverse hear a Noise almost like some kind of vibration when in neutral 1st 4th and 5th no noise at all. I know it doesnt add horse but not missing a gear because too much torque and throwback into the seat you cant miss a shift feels like everything is fluid and tight! I'd take the subtle noise any day of the week now (^_^)

      Amazing upgrade!

This is an awesome product! I'm not the least bit "handy" with tools and the install was quick and easy. Shifts are much smoother and the handle doesn't flex like the old one did. Couldn't be happier with this part!

Barton should be a Ford supplier

For starters, I installed my Barton in conjunction with a driveshaft upgrade, so that made my life easier straight away. I opted for the round shaft unit because I wanted to retain my Bullitt shift handle. After removing the driveshaft, the shifter was completely exposed. You still need to lower the trans as much as you can to remove the front mounting bolt. My trick for the install: since I had the driveshaft out of the way, I decided to put the Barton in from the bottom. Because of this, I also decided to put the weather boot on before the install, knowing that I would only have to pull it through the top, making it a lot easier to seat the boot. This saved me much time and aggravation. Overall, this is a great product. I really like the centering spring, and the 2-3 shift is just spot-on. The quality and construction of the unit are top notch, in fact, I was appalled at the stock unit next to the Barton when I took it out. The factory unit looked like an after thought. For the money, you can't beat this shifter.

Best shifter I have used in a Mustang

I've owned several mustangs, all different years and combos and feel like the Barton is one of the best I've installed and used. No need to remove the trans x member to install it just put the car in the air if you have a lift if not use jack stands or four ramps. Installation took around an hour.

      BEST UPGRADE EVER!!!

Night and day difference from the stock shifter. As stated before, not as easy as the video's show but I did it in under two hours with a jack and two jack stands. Really well made in USA product too! Careful putting the new one through the console opening, I scratched mine up a bit. Bye bye missed third gear shifts!
