Review & Install Video

This is a Barton Short Throw Shifter with a round handle for the 2005 to 2010 GTs equipped with the TR-3650. You're gonna wanna check out this shifter if you're looking for a short throw shifter upgrade that keeps a stock-like shifter handle, reuses stock shift knob for a stock look, and if you don't mind paying for the quality and the fitment that Barton delivers with its products. The install for this shifter is gonna be a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You can plan on spending about an hour getting this installed. This shifter offers a 36% reduction in throw, which is right up there with most of the other short throw shifter options but a little bit below. Most of your other options out there are giving you a 40% reduction in throw. But I honestly don't think that you guys are gonna notice the 4% difference here, especially when we're talking about this much difference over the stock shifter. A shorter throw means a shorter length between each gear that your shifter and handle have to travel. The thought here is that the shorter distance means faster shifts and better performance. But other than performance, you're also gonna get a totally different feel altogether. This different feel isn't just from the throw reduction, but it's also gonna be from the entire shifter, its construction, the throw reduction, and its bushings. This shifter is completely made from billet aluminum and stainless steel. Now it's typical to see an aftermarket shifter like this made from CNC machined aluminum where you usually see steel instead of stainless steel. This is a solid piece and it has harder poly bushings that aren't gonna allow for as much movement in the shifter. They're also more durable than the stock rubber bushings are. This is gonna give you a more solid feeling, shorter action than the stock shifter can give you. You do have some options when it comes to bushings and short throw shifters. You can go with the spherical bearing or a harder durometer poly bushing like you see in the shifter here. This is a complete kit in a sense that you're gonna get your shifter and the OEM style shift handle. You will reuse your stock shift knob or you can pick one up with the stock 12 x 1.25 thread pattern if you wanted to. When it comes to price, you can expect to pay, right about the $280 mark. This isn't your most expensive option, but there are other more affordable options out there like the SR Performance option or the Hurst Competition Plus Shifter. But the Barton here is known for its quality and fitment. So you know you're getting a good product with this shifter. But if this is a bit too pricey for you, you do have a handful of other options that you can always check out instead. As far as the install goes, this is gonna be a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You can plan on spending about an hour getting this installed. You will need a socket set to complete this install, as well as a screwdriver, of course, a jack and jack stands too or a lift if you're lucky enough to have access to one. You'll start by removing the shift boot and the retainers so you can remove the shifter. The shifter will just come up once the shift knob is out of the way. There are two screws under the boot that you'll need to remove. Then you can remove the center trim by prying on all four corners. The shifter dust cover will come off next. Then you'll move under the car. You'll need to drop the cross-member. Remove the 2 18 millimeter bolts and put the bolts back in a few threads, loosen the 2 other bolts. You'll need this space here to drop the trans a little bit. Next you'll remove the shift linkage nut and pull the linkage out of the shifter and leave it off to the side. Pull the shifter front support bolt and the rear support nuts. Remove the bracket and the clip, and then you'll be ready to pull the stock shifter out through the inside of the car. You'll swap the stock shifter for the Barton shifter and set the Barton into place. Install the linkage in the new shifter, install the new rear bracket, reinstall the front support bolt, and tighten everything down. The dust bolt will go back into place and then you'll be ready to install your handle. Once the handle is installed, you're gonna install the center trim, the shift boot, and the shift knob. That's gonna wrap things up for the Barton Short Throw Shifter for the '05 to '10 GT. And you check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

    Barton Short Throw Shifter

This is a great shifter. Precise, beautifully made, no vibration or noise and it feels substantially better that the stock shifter. Barton"s claim to never miss third gear again is legit. It comes with a CD with instructions which were very good. I installed mine without removing the console and it wasn't hard to do.

Barton should be a Ford supplier

For starters, I installed my Barton in conjunction with a driveshaft upgrade, so that made my life easier straight away. I opted for the round shaft unit because I wanted to retain my Bullitt shift handle. After removing the driveshaft, the shifter was completely exposed. You still need to lower the trans as much as you can to remove the front mounting bolt. My trick for the install: since I had the driveshaft out of the way, I decided to put the Barton in from the bottom. Because of this, I also decided to put the weather boot on before the install, knowing that I would only have to pull it through the top, making it a lot easier to seat the boot. This saved me much time and aggravation. Overall, this is a great product. I really like the centering spring, and the 2-3 shift is just spot-on. The quality and construction of the unit are top notch, in fact, I was appalled at the stock unit next to the Barton when I took it out. The factory unit looked like an after thought. For the money, you can't beat this shifter.

    I love this shifter!!

I put this in with one jack stand on its lowest setting and I'm not small (gym, lots of gym)...its not as easy to pull out the stock shifter and put the Barton in as the video makes it seem, I did not lower the transmission through had to fight it in. I got home at about 8pm change clothes...installed the shifter and sequential tail lights with a little bit of time to dawdle around... was done by 10 something not hard to do at all... The shifter is awesome, works great I like it better than the Hurst shifter... plus it looks OEM which I wanted... I'm very happy with it!!!

    Barton shifter 2008 Bullitt

Once stock shifter out (difficult to get through opening), Barton installed easily with right tools. Better install video than Barton's is one at CJ Pony Parts ( sorry for the competitor mention American Muscle, but I do prefer your site for ease of searching, prices, quick shipping). Nicely made shifter, looks exactly like stock when installed. Nice short throw, but only 4 stars because of the increased effort for the shifts, and took some practice getting quickly back into 1st at a stop. 2nd to 3rd shift much better than stock. Overall a good upgrade.

    Huge Difference

I was very excited to install the Barton Short Shifter to improve the shifting experience over the stock shifter. When it arrived within a couple days and with the help of a lift, it installed very easily. I had more issues removing the stock shifter than installing the Barton shifter. All parts fit perfectly. I noticed an immediate difference in the shifting. First is a little snug, but each gear just drops into place and the travel between second and third is extremely minimal. Highly recommend the Barton for a quick and noticeable upgrade to the stock shifter.

    Beast of a shifter!

This thing is a beast. I could feel the stock shifter bending when shifting under normal driving conditions. The Barton shifter has no give even under extreme punishment, I couldn't be happier. The shifts are also very smooth and a super short.

    You need this!!

I didn't think the short shift would make that big of a difference in my car. 0-60 definitely improved, well enough you can actually feel the difference. I think this is 1 if the best investments I've made for my car and would highly recommend you do the same. Install is a breeze if you know how to turn a wrench..

    Short shifter up grade.

Love this Shifter, no more wondering if 3rd is going to cooperate on a quick shift, why was this not a standard shifter from factory.. FORD??? I'm not a mechanic, but watched the video..ok.. not as quick as the video indicates, and the fight with the rubber dust boot will challenge ones patience, but the end result is an amazing upgrade and a pleasure to use.

    Barton Short Throw Shifter

What a difference!! Just as advertised, this was an easy install and made a huge difference in shifting. I installed in about two hours because I took time to clean under the console from the previous owner's soda accident. The straight install would have been 90 minutes or less. The only tricky part of the installation was making sure the forward bolt went in straight and didn't cross thread. The quality of the part was as billed too. The Barton shifter makes the OEM unit look like a toy. Shifts are now more firm and crisp, no more slop. Going from second to third is a sure thing. Thanks A.M.!

    This shifter is awesome

After doing a little research I chose the Barton short throw shifter because of all the positive reviews. The install was a breeze took about a hour start to finish. Product was very well constructed and a big improvement from the stock. Having owned three mustangs and in comparison to the hurst and the roush short throw shifter this Barton shifter really delivers. It really is a must have upgrade if your looking for a short throw shifter.

    Barton Short Throw Shifter

It is well worth the extra money to me to get this one that has the solid milled rear mount bracket. Installed it in a 2008 GT/CS. Took my time putting it in. The most time was spent figuring how to remove old shiter up and out, you do it from inside the car car. I could intsall this in 30 to 40 minutes if I had to do it again. My wife really loves how it shifts as well.

Great shifter, changes the driving experience entirely.

So I parked my '07 GT up on ramps and went at it after watching the install video. Total time was actually just a little bit over an hour. All in all a very easy job, you just end up contorting your body to get at a couple bolts underneath. The shifter came complete able to accept the stock knob, but didn't come with any knob itself (which didn't bother me I'm keeping the stock knob until I decide which I want). It is a very stout and solid billet construction, makes the stock shifter look very flimsy by comparison. After a test drive it is very stiff at the moment, which I'm sure will change the more I drive it. It wants to center itself very strongly, and as you shift it, the feeling is substantial - like you are actually doing something to change gears as opposed to the stock jello model. The shifter moves into its respective gates quickly without hanging up on anything. The best part - the shifter barely moves to change gears! The reduction is huge after driving it, very impressive! After throwing it in and driving it I would totally recommend this model to anyone!

    Really enjoy this shifter

I wish I would have bought this shifter originally 2 years ago instead of the Hurst. This is exactly the fit and feel I was looking for in my Bullitt. Shifts are tight and smooth whether casual driving or hard acceleration.

    A Must Do!

Replacer my Hurst short throw shifter with this Barton shifter and it sure makes a big difference. Shifting is much better. You have confidence in what gear you are in and it just feels much more heavy duty. I would definitely recommend this product.
