Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey everybody. I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my review of the Borla Stinger S-Type Catback exhaust system available for your Fastback 2015 and up Mustang GT, with your choice of either a black or polished tip. Now the Stinger or S-Type is one of a few different offerings from Borla available here at AM including the Ford Racing by Borla Sport, and touring catbacks, the Stinger S-Type here, and of course the louder ATAK system. One thing I really like about the S-Type here is that, yes it's going to give you the volume as we just heard with our sound clips, but it's going to have a slightly deeper tone compared to that ATAK system. The ATAK is going to be the loudest of the four. There's no getting around that, but it does have a little bit more of a higher pitch, or a little bit more of a rasp even though they both utilize the same X-pipe here. So if you're going for a little deeper tone, you might want to consider the S-Type. All that being said, again this thing is definitely going to deliver in the volume department. So for that reason it's an easy three out of five, maybe even a four out of five on our one to five, or one to wake the neighbors scale. Again if you're going for straight up volume, then you definitely want to consider the ATAK, or maybe even check out the Corsa Extreme. Going into the S-Type a little further guys, you are going to stumble across a few different options when ordering your system here at AM. Let's start with these tips. You can see we have the black option on the table with me here today, but you can also pick up the S-Type with a chrome or polish tip. In addition to that, the system is available in both a two and a half inch Mandrel bent system or a full three inch system. Now for most naturally aspirated daily drivers or street strip guys out there, the two and a half inch system is going to be just fine. However, once you start pushing big boost or big power, then you might want to consider picking up the full three inch system from Borla instead. In addition to that quality build, guys, you are getting a great fitting system, and that should definitely not go overlooked here at the Borla. This thing practically puts itself on the car. So for that we're going to give it an easy one out of three wrenches on our overall difficulty meter. Obviously all the work is under the car, so figure jacks, jack stands, or ramps if you got them, a lift if you're lucky, and then maybe an hour or two from start to finish before you're making noise with this thing. I do want to point out again this system I have with me here today is only going to fit your fastback GT, convertible guys will have to look for another system. In the end I really enjoy the S-Type from Borla. Sure it's a lot of dough, but it's going to give you a great sounding exhaust note that's well rounded without being overly raspy, and you're getting the quality that comes along with a name like Borla. So be sure to check out an S-Type for your S550 right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Aggressive Throaty Sound. Add an aggressive throaty exhaust note to your coyote powered 2015-2017 GT Fastback Mustang with a Borla 3" Cat-Back Exhaust System that features a pair of Stinger S-Type mufflers and 4" embossed chrome exhaust tips. This catback not only sounds great, but also improves exhaust flow with the included X-Pipe for an increase in horsepower and torque.

Race Car Growl. The included Borla X-Pipe not only helps increase power and performance, but it also adds a loud raspy, race car like growl to the sound of your exhaust with its modern "X" crossover pipe design.

High Quality Construction. Manufactured from ultra smooth mandrel bent 3" diameter stainless steel tubing to improve exhaust flow, this Borla catback exhaust system includes an X-Pipe and features two straight-through "Stinger" mufflers with 4" chromed stainless steel tips that are embossed with the Borla logo for both aggressive sound and impressive looks.

Works with Factory and Aftermarket Headers. Borla engineered their 3" catback exhaust to work with both the factory manifolds and larger aftermarket long tube headers by including step-down adapters and intermediate pipes. This lets you install the catback on your bone stock Mustang with the option of adding long tube headers or other performance parts in the future without having to purchase a whole new cat-back system.

Application. This Borla Stinger S-Type 3" Cat-Back exhaust system is designed as a direct bolt on replacement for all 2015-2017 GT Fastback Mustangs equipped with the coyote 5.0L V8 engine. Not compatible with convertibles.

Technical Note. The included mufflers are 49 state drive-by noise legal, not intended for use in the state of California.

Ask a Question

Will this exhaust fit the Stainless Works (Performance) long tube headers without any modification of fabrication? If not, then which that are street legal?

ErikT

  • We do not see any issues running this cat-back with the Stainless works headers as both piping will be the same size.

Is there a noticeable difference in sound (volume and tone) between the 2.5 inch and 3 inch diameter pipes? Thanks!

LKN

  • There will not be a noticeable difference in sound between Borla Stinger S-Type exhausts based on diameter. For a different exhaust note you would want to look at a Borla exhaust with different mufflers.

Has anyone ever heard these with an h-pipe? I see the reviews saying these have a great low sound, which I want, but an h-pipe would theoretically make it even lower and the classic muscle car burble/rumble more pronounced, which sounds appealing.

Is this exhaust a direct fit with borlas long tube headers? Or would I need other parts?

MM

  • This Borla Stinger S-Type 3 in. Cat-Back Exhaust will be a direct fit with the Borla Long Tube Off-Road Headers, Item 389218, and would not need any additional components. http://www.americanmuscle.com/borla-lt-headers-2015gt.html

    Best of all worlds

I just got a shop to install this form. They handled the ordering for me, did install while I waited when it arrived. Cold starts are much louder than stock, sounds like a demon above 2700 rpm with WOT, has little better low rumble than the 2.5 at idle imo, almost dead silent in 6th at highway speeds (1400-2000 rpm). No drone (unless you accidentally shift into 6th at 40mph and rpm drops to 1000-1100 rpm-- so unless you like to do 40mph in 6th this system has no drone.) 1.5 hour install at $100 per hour in Texas.

    Sounds Awesome

Exhaust system was delivered complete. Installation was a breeze, took roughly 2 hours with a auto lift. Everything fit well and sounds like a mustang should. The tone of this exhaust system resembles that of the stangs from the 1960's when you open up the throttle. Light rumble at idle and cruising speeds with no droning. Definitely recommend.

Installed on 15 GT, my first install. Had some issues with lining up the tips just right but overall the install went well using the instructions provided. Sound is amazing and deep growl that I wanted.

    Easy install - good sound

Sounds good, and install was easy. Solid quality. The right tip is slightly off center when looking at the rear and can't be adjusted due to the way the hanger is positioned and welded. Sounds deep at lower rpm -in a good way-and then gets pretty loud and higher tone with more rpms

    Great Exhaust upgrade from stock

This install took me and a friend about 2.5 hours, 40 minutes of which spent trying to figure out the best way to jack up the car. Exhaust went on clean, only 2 different size bolts during the whole install, so super simple. Been driving for a week now, and loving the sound! Exactly what I was looking for - nice deep tone, but not over the top, and of course no droning at all.

    Great Exhaust

Install was extremely easy, fitment was perfect. The sound is great, it has a nice deep tone and doesn't drone loudly while cruising at 2K rpm. When you get on it, it's very noticeable and doesn't have too much raspiness. Perfect exhaust for me and my kids love it too! It took about an hour to do the exhaust with just jacking up the rear end of the car and throwing it on jack stands.

    Awesome!

The Borla system provides 3 levels to satisfy all interests. The S-Type is the middle on the volume scale and it is just what the doctor ordered. It's a little loud for my taste upon startup but it quickly settles down to a nice growl. I love it!

    Different from the rest

I got the Exhaust as promissed, Box was a bit wartorn and patched up having survived a UPS shipment. Slight damage to a Muffler which made the install time almost 2 Hours Other than that, That moment when I first started my mustang, it roared to life, loud, beefy, throaty exhaust note that I did not expect. From previous reviews and videos but only from the 2.5" Borla S-type catbacks it was mentioned that there would not be that much difference, well, there is. Using a stock header setup gives you the option to upgrade without having to change the exhaust. Starting it up with a cold engine, it Roars...its pretty loud but as the engine warms and dropps back to op temp it has a pretty deep, throaty note that I Love. Cruising on the highway its a few decibels higher than stock exhaust but when under a load such as stepping on the gas or going up a hill, the exhaust is a bit more pronounced in the cabin. Passing a left lane slow driver.... They will definitely be aware they have Managed to upset someone .

Borla Catback S Type 3' Exhaust

The sound is aggressive and is there when you want it to be but also quiets down when cruising. This was my first mod to the s550 and I have no regrets! I installed myself with a buddy and it took us about 2 hours to complete. It is loud but of course the ATAK is loudest which is why i gave it 4 stars but I am not complaining this exhaust always puts a smile on my face when I drive around town! Headers are next!

    Can't beat Quality

Had the Roush Axle backs which I paired with ford performance xpipe and was awesome... upgraded to Kooks Headers and this exhaust not believing that could be topped for sound... was I wrong.... amazing... as always American Muscle customer service is second to none... I called them probably 6 times and they were patient and supportive... absolutely quality exhaust... and no drone...
