      Video Review & Installation

Justin: If you're looking for an affordable way to crank the volume on your 2018 and newer Mustang GT, well then, you'll definitely wanna give the C&L Performance Sport Axle-Back a listen. The C&L will pack a full stainless steel build along with the straight-through muffler and massive 4.5 inch polished tips all for that mid to high $300 price point. Install will involve some cutting here, guys, as is the case with any S550 axle-back. So, figure middle of the road two out of three wrenches on the old difficulty meter and I would say a couple of hours or so to complete from start to finish. But as always, hang with me for a little bit and we'll walk you through that job later in the video. But let's get right into the sound you can expect with the C&L system in place, and listen, this axle-back is going to peg the bang for your buck meter when it comes to sound. Right? Strong, aggressive tone from the small perforated tube mufflers and one that I feel confident in giving a soft four out of five on my one to five or one to wake-the-neighbors scale which, let's be honest, is pretty stout for an axle-back by itself. Now you do get a little boom inside the car around 2000 RPM on the highway but it's by no means what I would consider one of the worst systems out there when we're talking about drone. In fact, not even close. But the star of the sound comes from these small, straight-through design mufflers that to me resemble kind of a mini ROUSH muffler for the S550 GT. Now those mufflers, again, do feature what is called a straight-through perforated tube design which is going to pass through the muffler's packing, shape the sound a little bit, and take some of the edge off if we were talking about, maybe, a straight pipe design. Now because these are a straight-through muffler, you are going to be increasing your flow and obviously your volume, especially when we're comparing this to maybe a more restrictive factory muffler or maybe even an aftermarket chambered muffler design. But aside from the mufflers, you can also expect full three-inch mandrel bent tubing throughout here all exiting out the massive quad 4.5-inch tips which, obviously, are a bit longer than some of the other systems out there on the site which makes for a very unique look once they are installed. But maybe most importantly here, guys, is the fact that you are getting a full stainless system for south of 400 bucks. Now the tips, you're looking at that quality 304 grade stainless steel while the rest of the system is still nice 409 grade stainless. So, a solid build and one that should definitely last you a very long time without any fear of rust or corrosion. Now the C&L kit does include all of your clamps needed for the install which, again, will require some cutting here in order to remove those factory mufflers. This is pretty much standard for all S550 axle-backs out there and the only way to really avoid this, guys, is to upgrade to a full cat-back exhaust but, obviously, at a much higher price point. But to give you a better idea of how the install will go down, feel free to check out our detailed walkthrough and tool breakdown right now.Male Speaker: Tools for this install: a Sawzall with a metal cutting blade, eye protection as well as hand protection, a marker, an impact, an electric ratchet, a 15-millimeter socket, 13-millimeter socket, and exhaust hanger tool. Now before we get into this install, we're gonna go ahead and show you a clip of how to get your axle-back section off of your exhaust then I'll be back to show you how to get the new one on.Sara: All right. So once you have your mustang in the air, either on the lift or jack stands, we're gonna mark our spot on the exhaust and we're gonna make our cut. Now you can take this entire exhaust off and cut it separately but I think it's a little bit easier to cut it on the car and it doesn't actually need to come off so we can do it right on the car. Let's grab a sharpie and make our mark. All right. So we're going to cut right after this 90-degree bend. You wanna make sure that you're cutting in the straight section and you wanna give yourself as much as the straight section as you can for the exhaust to clamp onto. So our mark is gonna go right at the end of the 90-degree bend and the beginning of this straight here. So right about this area. You can get a straight edge if you wanna be more precise. All right. Once our mark is made, we're grabbing our reciprocating saw and we're gonna make our cut. Try to make sure your cut is as straight as you possibly can so your exhaust can slide over the pipe nicely. All right. At this point, we're gonna remove the large muffler now that it is off the exhaust. We're gonna take it out of the hanger here. If you don't wanna take it out of the hanger, you can remove the two 13-millimeter bolts that hold the hanger bracket on there. We're gonna use one of these hanger tools to just push the post out of the rubber hanger itself. Okay, now we can repeat that process on the other side. Again, we're going for the end of the 90. We're gonna make a mark as straight as we can all the way around to just try to keep our cut as straight as possible. All right. Now we can grab our saw and make our cut. I don't know if I said before but make sure you're using the proper safety equipment and you might wanna grab a friend to put a hand on the muffler as you're cutting. So go ahead and make your cut. All right. Go ahead and take your muffler out. Again, if you have a second set of hands here, could be helpful. Just make sure you're careful as it's gonna fall as soon as it's loose.Male Speaker: Now that you have your exhaust cut and your tips and muffler removed, we're gonna go ahead and remove the exhaust hanger bracket to make things easier on you. This is gonna call for your 13-millimeter socket. Now go ahead and place your exhaust hanger bracket on your new exhaust tip. Grab one of your kit provided clamps, place that over your cut tailpipes, and go ahead and place your new exhaust tip onto your stock exhaust and hang your hanger. Pull your hanger back in place, again, grabbing your 13-millimeter socket, and finally, we can take our 15-millimeter socket and bolt down our clamp. Now repeat those steps on the other side. And that's gonna wrap it up for this review and install of the C&L Axle-Back Exhaust with polished tips, fitting your '18 to '21 GT without active exhaust.
