Review & Install Video

Hey everybody, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and welcome to my quick breakdown and Dyno test of the K&N Series 69 Typhoon cold air intake system available for your '11 to '14 Mustang GT. So why go with a K&N for your S197? Well, it's safe to say they know a few things about intakes and air filters having pretty much written the book on modern day filtration. Now because of this, K&N continues to be one of the most popular choices for your aftermarket intake and filter needs in the automotive world and beyond. Now of course most of us would like to say we install aftermarket cold air intakes mainly for their performance and sound benefits, but the improvement in under hood appearance should definitely not go overlooked, especially with the K&N here. As you can see, the Typhoon intake is really going to pop under the hood thanks largely in part to this bright chrome aluminum intake tube and my personal favorite part about the intake, this carbon fiber heat shield, which is really going to set this thing apart from some of the other intakes on the market. However, since making more power is what we're all about here, let's talk about how the K&N will help you in that regard. Now this cold air is going to replace that cheap paper element filter in your GT with K&N's high flow reusable oiled intake filter and basically allow for more power no matter what your modifications may be. One of the nice things about the K&N Series 69 Typhoon intake is that it does not require the use of a custom tune. So for those of you guys out there who might not be ready to pull the trigger on a tune just yet but are looking for some of the performance and appearance benefits of an aftermarket cold air intake, this would be a great option. Nevertheless, running a custom tune is going to be a great idea as it's only going to increase the performance on your GT while also improving your driveability yet maintaining reliability at the same time. Now doing a cold air intake is one of those things I recommend for everybody out there as it's definitely one of the easier mods you'll ever tackle with your Mustang and really should only take you about an hour using basic hand tools. As always guys, if you have any more questions about the Typhoon intake from K&N or anything else here on the site, feel free to reach out to us anytime. We already grabbed our baseline run earlier today using our automatic 2011 GT behind me. So now with the K&N installed and that tune uploaded, it's time to turn the rollers one more time and see what the numbers are. So our baseline run using our automatic 2011 GT gave us 358 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the K&N, the car is now making 375 horsepower and 358 pound-feet of torque making for a peak gain of 17 horsepower over those baseline numbers and gains of as much as 25 horsepower and 26 pound-feet of torque under the curve. So if you guys are in the market for a very attractive no tune required cold air for your Coyote powered S197, then be sure to check out the Series 69 Typhoon from K&N available right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Improves Horsepower And Torque. The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake completely replaces your Coyote powered GT Mustangs restrictive factory air box and paper filter element with a high flow K&N filter assembly and a free-flowing aluminum intake tube for a noticeable increase in horsepower and acceleration all while still providing excellent filtration. Power gains of 25 horsepower and 26 ft/lbs torque have been seen at the rear wheels.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Cold Air Intakes on the market for the 5.0L V8 Mustangs this K&N Series 69 CAI does not require a computer re-tune. The engineers at K&N really did their homework to improve your pony's power using the factory tune.

Filters out harmful contaminants. The supplied K&N Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with it's unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Washable, Reusable Filter. K&N designed their high flow air filters to be reusable. That means there is no need to buy a new filter every few thousand miles, you can just clean the filter, re-oil it, and save money with a K&N Filter Recharge Kit.

Straight Forward Installation. The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake Kit is designed to install easily with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for proper installation. All necessary parts and instructions are included.

Application. This K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake kit is specially designed to fit the 2011 to 2014 GT Mustang's equipped with the Coyote 5.0L DOHC V8 engine. No computer retuning required.

Technical Note. This K&N Cold Air Intake is not legal for use in California or other states adopting California emission standards.

Want to confirm that you need to re-oil this after cleaning. Which oil do you use also? Thanks.

Bruiser

  • The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake does require oiling after being cleaned. We highly recommend K&N's Recharger Kit which includes their cleanser and oil, which does not damage the filter. Unfortunately, we do not carry the Recharger Kit, however, this is something that you should be able to acquire at most auto-parts stores.

With the top cover on, do you still hear the typical and expected intake sound like the other intakes without a cover?

dohc97

  • With the cover on, you will most likely still be able to hear the sound but it will be muffled. It will not be as prominent as an open CAI.

    Amazing air intake

I wanted to get one with a lid bc on my 2014 gt, the vents are directly above the filter, so I wanted to keep the water out. I didn't want to spend this much but I'm actually glad I did. I haven't tuned it yet but I've been riding around with it for around a month and it feels and sounds great. Not to mention it looks awesome. Also took me about 45 min to install. Very easy. Highly recommend.

Excellent Product for my 2013 GT

I was hesitant to buy this at first because of the price. it was just more expensive than other brands. however with the 2013 GT, i was more into the closed type manifold with roofing to avoid dust and water dropping in from the hood vents. Never the less, it improved a lot of my car's performance, even though my exhaust is still stock, the power and responsiveness really was paid off.

    Great product!!

I debated on something a lil cheaper but with this mod I'm glad I spent a few bucks to actually feel the increased power! Rpm barely exceeds 6k on 2nd gear and you can feel the power while throttling. Install easy with basic hand tools. Worth the money just do it!!!!

    Great intake

This intake is a great addition to your Stang. Looks super clean under the hood and the contrast looks great with the stainless tube and carbonfiber cover. Super easy install as well. Nice for price and there is no tune required which is nice if you are looking for a slightly cheaper alternative (recommend go pop for a tune, makes a world of difference) highly recommend this product.

    Love this Typhoon!!

I replaced my Roush CAI with this KandN Typhoon after deciding to buy the Bama X4 tuner. WOW....the combination has really woke up the beast in my 2011 GT!! Installation was easy, with the help of precise instructions. The carbon fiber cover screw hole alignment is off slightly, just had to flex the air box slightly with each screw. The air filter needs to be mounted BEFORE it says in the instructions though. I could not get it seated while the collar was screwed to the air box. Easy fix!!! I highly recommend this CAI. It looks great under the hood!

    K N Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake (11-14 GT)

Easy to install, took no time at all. Excellent fit and really dresses up the engine compartment from the plain stock filter. I did notice the difference right away, a lot less hesitation when you hit the gas! Gives the GT some more growl as well. Would definitely recommend this part.

    2013 GT/CS

Unboxed the kit, everything was complete and the instructions were easy to follow. Noise-wise it is a little louder at higher RPM, which is nice. Did not notice any real performance gains that made me go WOW. It needs to be paired with a real tune for maximum happiness. The intake is a really good looking intake for engine showoff. Few things I did not like: 1) There were some metal flakes inside the intake tube from where the MAF machining had been done, so I chose to inspect/clean the inside of the tube first really well, as no one wants that in their motor. 2) The MAF location is kind of poor, it puts a bit of strain on the electrical connector, I released one of the clamps that holds the wiring harness on the front clip to give it a little more relief but im not a fan of it. 3) The airbox doesn't fit quite as snugly into the stock cold air duct as I would like it to and wiggles a SLIGHT bit.

    Great Addition

I love the way this intake looks and fits. The fitting into the stock air hole on the grill was a little tricky. One downer is if you have a loud exhaust like me then you don't really hear the intake sound. Overall great addition.

Want to give it one star....

Only reason because of its bad butt-ery (for the kids). Placed into my girls 5.0 and made it that much faster than my Mach 1. Fits great, looks great, sounds great, and performs great.
