Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie, with americanmuscle.com. Here is a review and an install of the SR Performance Muffler Delete Axle-Back Exhaust that's available for the 2015 and up, S550 GT Mustang. We're gonna cover a few things with this exhaust in this video. We maybe be talking about the sound of the axle-back, the materials, and the install. The install for this is easy, it's a two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter but only because you do need a cut in order to install an axle-back on an S550, but we'll talk more about that later. The SR Performance Muffler Delete Axle-Back Exhaust is going to be a system that you should check out if you're looking for a stainless steel axle-back to make a big change in your exhaust note, but you want to keep the cost down as much as possible because, let's face it, exhaust for the S550 can get expensive fast. Muffler Delete Axle-Backs are more budget-friendly than normal muffler assemblies, so in this case, you're getting a ton of sound at one of the most affordable prices. Normally in an axle-back video, I'd start by talking about the mufflers right about now. In this case, we don't have any mufflers. A muffler delete system like this one is going to be loud and aggressive sounding because all that you have here are a set of pipes. A set-up like this is also going to reduce the normal flow restriction that you'd get with a traditional muffler set-up. All that you're looking at here is stainless steel tubing that bolts up to the factory piping, maintains a 2.5-inch diameter, and ends with 4-inch polished stainless steel tips. This is going to make for a very big change in exhaust note. After the resonator, you're not going to have any exhaust filtration whatsoever. As you heard in the sound clips, this is going to be much louder than stock and deeper sounding. The good thing about this axle-back though, is that if you want it to be tame it can be, but it gets rowdy when you lay into it. It's nice, in my opinion, when you get a sound that changes like this one. You have more of a range of tone and sounds to enjoy, and you don't have to worry when you're idling or lightly cruising that your car's going to be too loud. You do come across a little bit of drone with this axle-back. It is a muffler delete system, so I'm personally not surprised by that fact. It's definitely not the worst drone that I've ever heard but it is noticeable. As far as sound inside the car, you can hear that you have an aftermarket axle-back on the car but you don't get the same sound on the inside. It's much more toned down. This makes the drone not that bad, so it's not gonna be a deal-breaker, in my opinion. That being said, and after you guys heard the sound clips, I'm going to label this one as a four out of five on the loudness scale, one being a quiet upgrade and five being a very loud upgrade. For an axle-back, you can't get much louder than this. I will say though that you should keep in mind that you get this volume and this sound with the stock resonator still in place. If you ever change you mid-pipe down your road, or even your headers, this system is going to get even louder, and it has a potential to be very loud depending on what you do with the rest of your exhaust system. Just keep in mind the smaller diameter inlet that this axle-back has, being that it's made from stock exhaust. I mentioned earlier that this axle-back is stainless steel. Stainless steel is the best option when it comes to exhaust. If you're looking for corrosion resistance and a long life from the product, it's going to have property advantages over other materials, like aluminized steel, and it's gonna hold up much better over time. Next, we're looking at price. If you want to pick this axle-back up, you can expect to spend between $300 and $400. As our Performance does also offer this system with black tips, if you prefer that instead, but it is going to cost about $20 more. This is the most affordable axle-back for the S550. That does go back to what I said earlier about muffler delete systems being less expensive. This axle-back still has the 304 stainless steel, though, so you aren't lacking in materials. You're gonna be looking at the typical cut and clamp design with the install for this axle-back since you need to cut all S550 axle-backs. I'm gonna call this a two out of three wrenches in the scale but just because the cutting that's involved. It's nothing difficult, but I just recommend some eye protection and a fresh plate to make the cutting easier. Overall, you're looking at about two hours to get this all done. A lift would certainly make things easier for you here, but the job can be done on jack stands as well if you don't have access to one. Cutting the factory axle-back isn't hard, just be sure to measure twice and plan a mark where you'll be cutting so you don't make a mistake. The new axle-back will come with new clamps for you, so you don't have to worry about that. When you go to install your new set-up, it will probably be easiest to leave everything loose until you have it all lined up and then tighten it down. Wrapping things up with the SR Performance Muffler Delete Axle-Back System, this is a stainless steel axle-back that maintains a 2.5-inch diameter. It's designed to be used with the factory exhaust, or an aftermarket exhaust with the same diameter, and it delivers a ton of sound. As always, you can check it out more online right here, at americanmuscle.com.

More Power and an Aggressive Sound. If your looking to wake up the sound of your GT and the entire neighborhood for that matter, the SR Performance Muffler Delete Axle-Back Exhaust is for you. By replacing the factory mufflers with a set of straight pipes you will add an extremely loud and aggressive exhaust note to your V8 powered Pony. This Muffler Delete Axle-Back won't only improve the sound of your Pony, but it will also improve its power as well. By eliminating the restrictive stock mufflers you will increase exhaust flow for a noticeable increase in both power and performance.

Quality Construction. SR Performance manufactures their Muffler Delete Axle-Back from 304 stainless steel tubing for superior strength and long lasting corrosion resistance. Featuring mandrel bent 2.5" diameter tubing and a set of straight through exhaust tips, this Axle-Back will dramatically out flow the stock exhaust system. The included 4" 304 stainless steel exhaust tips are polished to a bright brilliant shine for a classic muscle car appearance.

Cut & Clamp Installation. The installation of this SR Performance Axle-Back Exhaust system will require cutting and removing the stock muffler assemblies. The new muffler assemblies will install in place of the old. Clamps and instructions are provided.

Application. SR Performance Muffler Delete Axle-Back Exhaust with Polished Tips is designed to fit both Fastback and Convertible 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the DOHC 5.0L V8 Coyote engine.

Ask a Question

Will I be able to install this muffler into a 2003 Mach 1?

vincentb

  • Unfortunately, this part would only fit the 15-17 Mustang GTs. It would require modification to be installed onto a 2003 Mach 1.

will this still bolt up to a system that has a resonator x pipe delete installed ?

falcon

  • Hello, As long as the x-pipe is "stock" length it should bolt up. I recommend giving our team a call so we can more accurately answer your question.

Looks muc better then the over size stock mess

This is a good looking set of axle-back exhaust. I did find that the hanger arm on this set did have to be bent some to get them to hang in the center on both sides. There could be more detail put into how the mounting bracket is welded to the pipe.

    LOUD!!!

This is really loud when paired with my heartthrob H-pipe. When it starts cold you better hope your neighbors aren't home because it roars. It is a little louder then I expected but I love it. I just drove from s.c. to n.y. (about 1500miles)and back after installing these and I did not get tired of it or feel it was to loud the whole trip. It is loud when you want it to be but quiet enough to drive through places known for pulling cars over with loud mufflers(ithaca ny). It is very low rumble that is crisp when it crackles off and screams when your getting on it. I did this myself with the car on jack stands within 1 hr. Easy install for me and it definitely gets the attention it deserves now

    The bad apple

The box it came in was kinda tore up and it didn't have any clamps in the box. Which AM sent me some came couple days later. the exhaust pipe on the elbow looked like it had been beaten on already just didn't want to hassle with sending it back and wait to get another one since wasn't gonna ruin the way it sounded. but after being put on it sounded great just how i wanted it to sound. plan on getting an h-pipe soon.

    Great bang for the buck.

DON'T waste money on other overpriced muffler deletes. Install was quick and easy and took less than an hour. Everything fit together perfectly. Ignore the instruction to remove the muffler hanger. The install is much easier if the hanger is left in place. In my case I left the resonator on and the sound is much improved over the stock system but not too loud that it is going to wake the neighbourhood. It will be louder if the resonator is removed. I have heard catbacks on these cars, that cost 3 times as much and the sound is the same and in some cases better than those expensive systems. I would recommend these.

What better way to let everyone know your car is serious than some great sounding exhaust. I love the raspy sound of these pipes! They are plenty loud, but surprisingly mellow when your idling.

    Wow!

Hard to believe the difference this exhaust made to my GT with the performance package. I am using these with the Ford Racing resonator delete and I mean the sound is just nineteen-sixtiesbig block muscle car all the way! Best sounding car since my 67 GTO. I can't say for sure what the difference is in Horsepower but I would say with these and the resonator delete probably at least 25 to 30 horse.
