Review & Install Video

Hey everyone, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com here with a new and exciting product that gives you the ability to change your exhaust tone on the fly. That's right. I'm taking a closer look at the Varex Axleback Exhaust system from X-Force fitting your 11 to 14 Coyote Power GT. X-Force is a relatively new exhaust company that's based out of Australia and gained a lot of popularity over there and slowly but surely their products are making their way over here to the U.S. where the demand and reviews have been favorable so far. Now again the Varex here is their bread and butter and is really exciting because it does give you full control of your exhaust tone at any time, on the fly, thanks to the remote control operation. Now a tunable exhaust system isn't exactly a new concept. Different companies have done it over the years with varying levels of success, and in fact Roush even implemented it recently on their new S550 cars. The biggest plus with the Varex here is you do have full control over your one at the push of a button here with the included key fobs from inside the car anytime. This means no getting out of the car, no messing with tools, anything like that. So how does it work? Well the Varex has an internal butterfly mechanism similar to a E-cutout that opens and closes with the key fob determining on how loud you want the muffler to be. Now keep it closed you'll have street mode which basically flows the exhaust through a chambered portion here in the muffler, keeping it quiet almost like a stock-like tone. But when you're ready to crank it up a little bit hold that button on the key fob all the way down. That butterfly mechanism swings open and at that point you have the race mode. It switches to a straight through portion of the muffler here giving you that very aggressive tone. The entire Varex system here has been constructed using durable stainless steel, polished to a nice bright finish and includes these four inch slash cut tips. Now the brains behind this operation here is this little control module that you do have to run inside the car using the included harness here but very straight forward and completely plug and play. These two ends plug into the muffler where this end plugs into the 12-vault source in your center console like we did with our 2011. Now guys we're going to call the install of the mufflers themselves about and hour which is standard for axle back and then maybe another 45 minutes to an hour getting your wire all situated. So, as always if you have any questions whatsoever with this exhaust system or if you need help with the install itself feel free to reach out to a Mustang expert. So if you're one of the many Mustang owners out there who can't quite decide if you want your car to be loud or quiet, well now you can have the best of both worlds here on the fly thanks to the Varex from X-Force available at AmericanMuscle.com.

Adjustable Sound. The Varex Mustang Axle-Back Exhaust system features adjustable Varex performance mufflers that allow you to switch from a mellow Street sound to a rich throaty Race style exhaust note or anywhere in between the two with just a push of a button!

How It Works. Varex performance mufflers utilize a sophisticated internal electronic butterfly valve mechanism to direct the exhaust flow within the muffler. In the open position the valve "uncorks" the exhaust flow allowing it to take the path of lease resistance to act more like a straight-through muffler for a rich throaty race style exhaust note. In the closed position the valve blocks the exhaust flow forcing it through the chambered paths to produce a classic mellow street friendly sound. This unique design is perfect for personalizing the power and sound levels of your Mustang to suit your own specific needs.

Stainless Steel Construction. Manufactured from high quality stainless steel for it's superior durability and corrosion resistance, this Varex Axle-back features two adjustable chambered mufflers that end  with massive 4.0" diameter polished stainless steel tips that exit in the stock location for impressive muscle car looks and sound.

Direct Bolt-On Installation. Engineered to be a direct upgrade replacement, this Varex axle-back will easily bolt up to the factory piping without any modifications required for a straight forward installation. The control module can be powered by your Mustangs 12v accessory outlet for plug and play operation or connected to a 12v source - the choice is yours.

Application. This Varex Axle-Back Exhaust is designed as a direct fit bolt-on upgrade for the 2011 to 2014 GT Mustangs equipped with the DOHC Coyote 5.0L V8 engine.

Ask a Question

Since this connects to the 12v, won't it drain my battery when the car is off?

Nick

  • The X-Force Varex Axle-Back Exhaust can be attached to any 12v battery source, and if it is wired in a way that is always drawing current from the battery, it can drain it. We would recommend wiring it with either a switch or in a way that it only gets current when the ignition is in the on position.

Will this fit a 2012 GT500? I see that other GT exhausts of this model year fit the GT500 as well but this product does not have the GT500 listed.

Is there anyway to operate this system using a switch inside the car. Love the system but my only dislike is a remote keyfob, also will the mechanism be safe for Midwest daily drivers ( snow and salt) and lastly if the electro is system fails is there a bypass to arrange the valve in a fixed position?

Will

Are there any horsepower gains with these mufflers?

jackw

  • Hello! I would not expect to see any gains from the X-Force Varex Axle-Back Exhaust, as any gains will be small. If you're looking for an exhaust that increases horsepower, we have plenty of cat-back exhausts that will give a solid gain.

    Installed on 16 gt

Bought this axleback for my 16 gt they do not fit right out of the box I had to cut a little bit of the pipe on the inlet side to match the bend of my existing pipes and cut and move the hanger was bit of a pain but works and looks good in the end. Paired with my flow master scavenger x pipe and sounds so good very nice tone and volume could be a bit louder but it's good enough I'm sure it will sound even better once I install my long tubes.

Nice install. Run around quite until the other Detroit motors show up and let them know what you think after the touch of a button. Passenger side was a little difficult to center. Make sure you have a Dremel with cuttof wheels.

    Exhaust note

Doing it by myself was not as easy as I would have liked it to be. In saying that I took my time and got it installed in four hours. I hard wired it into the car with a on/off switch. otherwise I would have had to plug and unplug the power and that would have not worked for me.. The sound is different, but I am getting used to it. I start the car up in the morning with it closed and when I am on the road I open it up. :-) ( Oh air ratchet is a must!!!!!! )

    Pricey but worth it.

I installed this exhaust this weekend and am thrilled with it. It works as advertised. Stock quiet when closed, excellent tone when open. Not ricey, no drone, just great tone. And the lopey idle from my track key is exquisite!

    Excellent product and customer service

Didn't know what to expect. I was concerned that the sound would be louder at the closed position than the stock GT. The Varex actually is a bit quieter than stock but when you open the butterflies the Stang comes alive. At full open position it sounds just like the Shelby GT 350. That's the advantage of having the butterfly in the muffler and not a header cutout. The remote control works immediately and is a perfect size. This is the only unit I have found that has remote controlled variable sound ability. I did the wiring but had a shop install the mufflers. It only took them 45 minutes.

    Sounds great!

I had these installed on my 14 Gt and they sound awesome, no 2000rpm drone and best of all my wife can quiet them down with the touch of a button. We did however have some fitting issues, they seemed to hang lower than the stock and had a difficult time getting them up to the stock location, it appeared to be the hangers were a bit longer. Otherwise they work great

    New Contender Hits The Streets

This Exhaust is a superb addition to my build list, I've had other mustangs in the past and here in Cali, cops are real rude when it comes to loud and or straight pipe ANYTHING. This system let's you run whatever build you want and having the ability to muzzle down when in residential or cop heavy areas, the tone is very nice, mean raspy and to the point. Should sound amazing with other bolt ons.

    Broke after one day

After struggling to get them to line up correctly for 5 hours I finally got them on then I was very disappointed to hear that on "race mode" or all the way open they are barley even louder than the stock vehicle and are not anything you want to put on your car if you want it to be loud

    JUST WHAT I WANTED

As stated by previous, reviewers this axle-back exhaust system is expensive. The fit and finish warrant the added expense. The automatic butterfly motor on each can also warrants the added expense. The ease of opening or closing the valves from inside the cabin is just what I wanted. Mama hates allowed car, daddy loves allowed car. Varex delivers exactly that with the X-Force axle-back exhaust system. The only problem I have encountered so far is that my gas mileage is gone down as I can't keep my foot out of the floorboard.

    Great Product

Was on the fence with this exhaust and the Corsa sport or Extreme, glad I went with X-force Varex system. Mouse quite when valve is closed, sounds stock from the interior and when they are open still not too loud but deep growl with minimal pops, very aggressive.Looks and quality are great, install only took 1.5 hours. If you want your cake and to eat it too this exhaust is for you.Only issue I had with packaging, looked like someone tossed in a box and sent it to me. 1 muffler had a scratch and 1 tip was flattened with a ding near the rear of the double wall, nothing visibly wrong when installed but still bothered me to spend that much and have it show up like that. I was able to fix the tip and the scratch on the muffler is pointed down so not a big deal I guess.otherwise I love it so far.
