Review & Install Video

Hey I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my detailed breakdown of the drive shaft shop one piece carbon fiber and aluminum drive shaft available for the 2005 to 2014 Mustang GT, all 11-14 V6s and the 2007-2012 Shelby GT 500. For all intents and purposes either the carbon fiber or aluminum one piece drive shaft would be a massive upgrade over the factory two-piece drive shaft in just about every way with the only exception of course being cost. Now before I lay down all the benefits of switching to a one-piece drive shaft, go ahead and click on that link below to subscribe to our YouTube channel if you haven't done so already. That way you can see more detailed product overviews like these drive shafts here in addition to other great Mustang bids that are certainly worth the watch. So the drive shaft shop has been around for over 30 years designing and producing quality drive shafts that have been used on everything from record breaking drag cars to some of our very own project cars like Project MMD and Project Coyote. Currently on the site, we are offering both the carbon fiber version and the lightweight aluminum version which again will be a huge improvement over that stocker not only in weight savings but also strength, drivability and performance. First up, let's start with the most obvious benefit of going with a one-piece drive shaft, weight savings. Now I do have the factory 2014 Coyote drive shaft here with me. So let's throw that on the scale and see what we're looking at. All right so the factory two-piece drive shaft is weighing in at roughly 37-1/2 pounds. Take this off. Now let's see what we're looking at with the aluminum drive shaft. So with the one-piece drive shaft, the aluminum version, we're weighing in at 18-1/2 pounds roughly. So we'll take this off and throw the carbon fiber version on and see what the difference is. And the carbon fiber version is just over 17 pounds right now. So there you go. Just by going with a one-piece lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber drive shaft you're roughly going to shave almost 20 pounds off your Mustang's rotational mass. By shedding that much weight off the drivetrain, you're going to notice a couple of different things, quicker revs and improved throttle response and you should even see slightly faster 60 foot and quarter mile times. Another benefit is that you should notice slightly less vibrations that can sometimes be associated with two-piece drive shafts. Another massive benefit is that the one piece drive shafts are just inherently stronger than the factory two-piece drive shaft. For one, you are eliminating the weak spot in the factory two-piece drive shaft and you're also going to be using stronger materials all around from the shaft itself to the CV and U joints much superior compared to the factory counterpart. First up, let's start with the lightweight aluminum version. Now if you want you can click on the link below to head back to our site if you're not there already to learn a little bit more about this guy. Now first up, the lightweight version is going to be a little less expensive compared to the carbon fiber version but will still offer all of the same performance benefits I just talked about a little earlier. The shaft itself has been made from a light weight 6061 T6 aluminum while the CV joint and U joints themselves have been made from extremely strong 300M alloy steel. This is the same steel used in aircraft landing gear and other applications where strength is an absolute must. The carbon fiber version on the other hand is slightly more expensive compared to the aluminum version but you do get a little bit more for your money. In fact, just click the link below if you want to learn more about this guy. Carbon fiber construction does weigh slightly less compared to the aluminum version as we just saw with our scale and when it does come to rotational mass, every little bit helps. Another plus with the carbon fiber version is that even though both options have been rated at 900 horsepower at the rear wheels that carbon fiber construction is going to have a higher degree of torsion and a higher tensile strength. So that basically means the carbon fiber material can handle much more abuse before breaking when compared to the aluminum version. Now even though the carbon fiber is technically stronger in that regard, it does have better elasticity allowing it to twist ever so slightly on those hard launches reducing some of the shock on your drivetrain, your gears and your axles. Because it does have the ability to dampen some of these noises, everyday driving should be a little quieter and free of noise vibration and harshness when compared to that aluminum unit. Getting either option installed on to your Mustang is actually pretty straightforward if you've never done one before but I will say it makes life a lot easier if you have a lift on hand in addition to another set of hands. On the other hand, if you want to do things the old-fashioned way and get on your back underneath some jack stands, well it can be done that way too but just be sure to leave yourself two hours to get the job done and make sure you have a good quality fork wrench on hand just to make sure everything is according to spec. Either way if you do have any questions about the install or about the drive shafts themselves, feel free to give us a call or shoot us an e-mail. Even though upgrading the factory two-piece drive shaft in your ride can be a little pricey, the savings in weight and general improvements overall are worth every single penny especially if your car sees a lot of track time. So be sure to check out the drive shaft shop options for your ride available right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Light Weight. Lighter and stronger than the stock 2-piece driveshaft, weighing it at only 18 lbs and 7.2 oz, The Driveshaft Shop's One Piece Mustang Driveshaft greatly reduces rotating mass to improve your Pony's 1/4 mile track times.

Superior Quality. Constructed from 3.5" diameter 6061-T6 aluminum tubing this driveshaft features a 1350 front u-joint with flange to mount directly to the transmission and a 28 spline 108mm 6-bolt rear CV joint made from an all new 300M material.

Extra Clearance. This light weight one piece aluminum driveshaft features a 3.5" diameter design giving extra clearance needed to avoid interference that can happen on lowered Mustangs equipped with a 4" shaft.

High Speed Balanced. Balanced on one of the most sophisticated balancing machines in the industry, at up to 9500RPM (revolutions per minute) this one piece driveshaft is rated for use up to 900 horsepower.

Application. This one piece aluminum driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop is designed specifically for use on 2005 to 2010 GT and Bullitt Mustangs equipped with either a Manual or Automatic transmission.

Is adjustable Upper Control Arm needed for it? My car is lowered about 1.3 in the front and 1.5 in the rear, along with adjustable LCA and pan hard rod. While still use the factory UCA.

Nick

  • While installing the driveshaft, you can install upper control arms to your vehicle. It would be an upgrade to your suspension but it is not necessary.

Hello, Does this Driveshaft come with installation hardware? Thank you very much.

GruntMarine

  • The Driveshaft Shop Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft would not come with any hardware, so you would need to reuse the factory hardware, or source new hardware.

Will this work with the g force 3650 ? It's an aftermarket tr3650. They claim it fits all stock components of a standard GT.

RoushS197

  • Unfortunately, we would not be able to guarantee the fitment of the Driveshaft Shop Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft with your G-Force 3650. If it fits the way G-Force claims, by using all the stock components of a standard GT, then it should fit. We would recommend reaching out to G-Force to ensure the transmission as it was described.

Will this drive line work on the the tremec t56 6 speed transmission?

07elanor

  • The The Driveshaft Shop Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft is designed to work with the factory transmission for a 2005-2010 Mustang GT. In order to work with the T56 transmission you will need a custom driveshaft that is the proper length for your setup.

Will this work? My car is lowered 2 inches. Most kits are 1 to 1 1/2 inch drops. Will this drive shaft still work. Have the factory H pipe still on, was going to go to a x pipe though. Will that also work?

Nbakern1

  • Dont know if this will help but i have the Eibach sport line lowering kit with bbk long tube headers and high flow cats in to a roush cat back exhaust. when my car was on a lift causing my rear axle to become unloaded there were clearance issues when i rotated the tires. when i dropped it back down there were no problems. with adjustable trailing arms and keeping the rear axle loaded you shouldn't have a problem adjusting it like i had to for everything to work.

Great driveshaft, excellent design and balance perfection!

I purchased just as American Muscle started offering the item. I thought I may be taking a chance, as there were no reviews of real life experience with this product. As always, arrived quickly from AM with all needed parts ready for install. I took my time, using floor jacks and stands. Not a difficult install at all, even on the garage floor. Make sure to clean the rear flange of all debris, bolt in and torque to spec, then go. Buy a nice loop as well, great piece of mind! Don't hesitate, purchase and enjoy the performance gain of this smooth turning excellent piece of engineering! Stop reading this and click 'Add to Cart'.

    Just an Upgrade

it will make some howling noise between 45-55mph a very little quicker launching. Barely noticeable. for about $900 (part and labor), there are much other mods you can do to your Mustang. I have already done almost everything to my Mustang, so I said well, I add this One Piece Driveshaft to it too. Why not

    One piece driveshaft

Paid a local garage to install the driveshaft. Can't really say that there is any difference in performance. Very surprised at the weight difference between the original shaft and the new one piece. A good way to reduce weight for your stang.

    I like it but: Caution

The performance improvement puts a smile on my face but the problem: I have a Kooks exhaust, full length headers with the x pipe. After encountering everyday road conditions (dips) the shaft chafes against the exhaust system. I will need to get this remedied. More money. Just to let you guys know. I had to install by myself on my back with stands and had to get the allen socket so time was extensive

    Brings it all together

This is one of my last mods and I will have to say I was very surprised. Car just felt different. Smoother, revs quicker, and no drivetrain noise. Car feels lighter. Like so many others, when you compare the OEM shaft to this one side by side it's stunning and its no wonder the car feels different. I installed myself and found a socket flex adapter very helpful attaching the shaft to the transmission housing. It helped get the right angle to torque the bolts correctly.

    Smooth as butter!!

Took my brother and me about 20 minutes after we got the car up on a lift to remove the old worn out shaft and install this new one. The car definitely feels livelier. Power delivery is just miles better now. I consider this a must after some serious power and drivetrain upgrades. Excellent product!!

Nice drive shaft but be CAREFUL...

I initially tried to intall on my own but the problem I ran into is torqueing the pinion flange adapter on the rear end. Torqueing at only 57 ft-lbs I had two bolt heads break off leaving me to dig the studs out of the pinion flange with a back-out tool. American Muscle customer service advised I buy the bolts at any hardware store and they would cover it. I doubt a hardware store would carry a painted hex bolt of this type. While they made an "attempt" at recitifying it, I still feel a little disappointed in the response. I contacted The Driveshaft Company (that's the name) who manufactures them on my own and they sent me out a new set of bolts immediately at no charge without question. So either they're willing to accomodate requests unabated, or this has happened to other people and they are aware of it. Either way, The Driveshaft Company came through. Nice product, just a friendly caution!

    great quality

very good quality. much lighter than stock and will need to go to the track to measure gains. around town no noticeable difference. will say if you have rear gear noise or poly bushings will send noise inside car. also other driveshafts require diff. flange replacement that will require an impact wrench and gear oil fill. this one uses flange adapter thats easy to install and worked great. fit and finish was great.

This Aluminum one piece driveshaft spins with a lot less noise. The car now runs down the road with less noise. Beside the weight reduction this is another benefit.

    good but pay attention

drive shaft is great compared to the stock 2 piece shaft. the problem i ran in to was i installed adjustable trailing arms which worked well with the stock drive shaft but not so well with the aluminum one. I just needed to spend a few more hours and make sure the drive shaft was aligned perfectly.

Reducing weight is like adding horsepower

I had this drive shaft installed by my garage. It took them about 1.5 hours and did it while I was having my oil, filter changed and tires rotated. total cost to me with the install and service along with a nitrogen tire fill was $228. Not bad. I was going to do it myself with my brother-in-law who builds and races dragsters, but he couldn't make over so my impatience got the better of me. The shaft is definitely quiter and smoother than the OEM. I've had the car to 90 mph with no vibration or apparent problems. I recommend this to anyone just wanting to make the car better.

    Smooth acceleration

I had my differential fall out the back of my '07 'Stang. The rear axle locked up and drive shaft got damaged. I took the opportunity to upgrade to the 3.73 axle. The dealer wanted over $900 for the 2 piece original driveshaft so it was a no brainer to get it upgraded. The responsiveness is awesome. If you have to replace the original for any reason, make the investment.

    Very Happy!

My stock drive shaft had cracked and was about to snap in half. This drive shaft is way way lighter freeing up power for the engine to turn. My mechanic installed it in his house in a little over 2hrs with the help of a friend. He says that it will last the life of the car and will handle any other mods I want to do to my 05 GT with ease. Cheers!
