Review & Install Video

I’m Justin from, and this is our detailed breakdown of the JLT Series 3 cold air intake system for the 2005-2009 Mustang GT. The first thing I notice when taking a look at this intake is the sheer size of everything, from the tube itself all the way down to that air filter, that’s going to be the big distinguishing factor with this intake versus some of its competitors. The series 3 features a massive 110mm MAF housing, which is one of the largest on the market today. This total combination is going to equate to more horsepower and torque at the rear wheels, and increase throttle response. The JLT features a 4.5” molded ABS plastic tube which is great at resisting engine bay heat especially when paired with that included heat shield. A nice thing about the series 3 is that it incorporates the MAF sensor housing right into the intake tube itself, eliminating the need for excess couplers or housings which can actually hurt your air flow. Due to the very large size of this JLT intake, running a performance tune is an absolute must, but before we go installing the intake and uploading our tune, we want to get a baseline number from our 06 GT back there just to see where we stand. With our baseline run out of the way we’re going to get to installing our intake which should only take us about an hour using standard hand tools. As I mentioned earlier, in order to properly run this JLT intake you will need a performance tune, we’re going to use our custom Bama tune which should really make the most out of our kit. This is going to do a couple of things for us, this is going to optimize our spark timing, adjust your variable cam timing, and get those air/fuel ratios right in the sweet spot. You’re also going to see improved throttle response as well. With our intake installed and our tune uploaded, let’s turn the rollers one more time and see how well the Series 3 performed on our GT. So our baseline run with our 2006 GT gave us 277 horsepower and 282 ft/lbs of torque. With our JLT installed, we put down 300 horsepower and 316 ft/lbs of torque making for a peak gain of 23 horsepower over our baseline numbers, and gains of 30 horsepower and 32 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. The Series 3 from JLT is for the Mustang enthusiast with all out performance in mind, the price is very competitive with other cold air intake kits on the market today, especially when you factor in how well it performs. Of course the added need for a tune will factor in to the overall price in the long run, but if you’re looking to get the most out of your naturally aspirated or supercharged 3 valve 4.6 motor, then the Series 3 is definitely worth checking out.

More Usable Horsepower. With a JLT Performance Series 3 Cold Air Intake and a custom tune installed in your 2005 to 2009 GT you can expect to see average gains of 25 to 30 more horsepower and 21 ft-lb torque at the rear wheels. In addition to an increase in horsepower you will also see an impressive improvement in throttle response.

110mm MAF Housing. With a massive 110mm MAF housing "the largest available on the market" this JLT Cold Air Kit was specially designed for Mustangs making over 350 RWHP, but works just as well on a stock daily driver.

Money Saving Reusable Filter. This JLT cold air intake kit comes complete with a 4.5" x 9" high flow reusable S&B powerstack air filter. So that means there is no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles. Now you can just clean the filter, re-oil it, save money, and go!

Easy Installation. The JLT Performance Cold Air Intake kit was designed to install with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for an easy 1 hour installation.

Required Upgrade. Installation of this Cold Air Intake will require the use of a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for operation.

Application. This JLT Performance Series 3 Cold Air Intake System is specifically designed for use on naturally aspirated 2005 to 2009 GT and Bullitt Mustangs equipped with the 4.6L V8 engine. Will also fit GT's equipped with a Saleen Supercharger.

Technical Note: The use of a SCT SF3/X3 PowerFlash or SCT LiveWire tuner is required to reprogram the vehicles computer for this Cold Air Intake.

  • its completely safe you can drive a infinite miles. check engine will came on because there's more air flow incoming thought the mass air flow sensor so check engine will turn on after your tune check engine will turn off because maf sensor will be recalibrated

I have a Cervini's Ram Air Type IV hood on my gt that does not have the ram air ducting for the stock air box. I am in the market for a cold air that i would not have to worry about driving the car in the rain with the open hood vents. Would this JLT have enough protection from the water or would i need to look at something else? Or do I need to pair a cold air with the cervini ram air kit that bolts up under the hood paired with a cold air? Just not sure what the best route would be with the hood. Thank you ahead of time for helping me.

I just purchased this jlt cai. I'm badgering trouble getting the coupler over the throttle body. I have a larger throttle body than stock. Any tips on how to stretch the coupler to fit ? TY for your time.

  • You can help make the coupler a bit more flexible so it fits on your throttle body by soaking it in warm water, or applying heat using a heat gun.

Which throttle body would pair great with the JLT cold air intake

  • Hey Lat, we actually did our own build where we paired the JLT cold air intake with the BBK twin 62mm TB (56015) and were more than pleased with the results!!

I read the reviews already here and figured, "oh, what the heck" and went for it. However, I was not really expecting anything significant. The installation was easy. However, the bracket that connects to the throttle body does need to be just a bit tighter than 'hand tight' on the instructions or it will pop off. Just a turn more than 'hand tight' did the trick there. The rest was very simple. I will say that the hood struts I had bought earlier also helped, as I am 6'3", and having the hood up higher and no pole in my way makes working under the hood easy. Okay, back to the CAI. I have a DiabloSport Predator tuner for my 2009 GT Convertible. I selected the JTL CAI 93 Octane Tune, let the computers talk amongst themselves for 3-4 minutes to load the tune. I then started the car, and right away heard a new, throatier sound. Performance wise, the improvement far exceeded my expectations. It is as if I have a whole new car. From take off through 100MPH, I noticed much more response to the accelerator, as well as those nice bursts of speed. The only thing you need to be aware of, if you live n a cold climate, is that you just can't start and go if it is really cold out side. Just start the car and wait for a mere 20-30 seconds. You will hear the sudden change in the idle, and then you are all set. I called both JLT and DiabloSport, and they say this is normal for a CAI when it is really cold. Appearance is great. As others have said, it really changes how the engine compartment looks. A sort of 'I am gonna whoop you' statement! If you are sitting on the fence like I was, get off and just do it. You will not regret it.

performance gain, but watch out for dealer fixes!

I purchased the combination JLT Cold Air Intake and Bama Tuner. Installation was relatively easy and the performance enhancement noticeable right away. I am not sure that fuel economy was enhanced much, although instructions claim that it should be. I experienced problems though when I received check engine lights related to fuel air mixture that required me to take the car to the dealer. Once the dealer flashed the car's computer to put in a new fuel pump, the bama tuner was locked, and I had to completely uninstall the JLT intake to protect the car's engine. The instructions are woefully inadequate for lay users, who can experience problems when the car comes in for service. Now that I understand the product better, though, I am pleased with overall performance.

    What a difference!

I immediately felt the difference from stock, of course right?! Accompanied by a new tune from Bama, this CAI really woke my 3v up! Not one complaint. Build and material quality is excellent, and it delivered what was promised. What more could I ask for?

    Pretty good for the price..

I had some trouble getting the rubber seal that goes over the throttle body over the plastic but besides that it wasn't to hard. I noticed a slight power gain but I also installed the BBK 62MM throttle body at the same time. I LOVE the fact the when my car gets to 3,200RPM's or so the engine just drops in sound and gets very deep and aggressive now it's almost as if the car just suddenly got very angry. I'd recommend this product, I always feel cold air intakes are a little to expensive for what they are and what they do but in the end it benefits air flow and increases power and best of all...deepens the sound of the engine.

    Beware of Hood issues

I was bought the jlt series 3 for a present I know for a fact the jlt is the best for the 3v engine makes the most gains of any on the market. So yes when said and done I enjoy this product but beware.... Installing wasn't to bad other that getting the heat shield between the fan shroud and radiator. Buttttttt a design flaw was found the top of the heat shield is to tall. When installed the hood closed and latches but drivers side where it's located pops out noticeablely. The heat shield is to tall I had to sand down the plastic to get my hood to close properly. Amd another side note was the filter had greasy substance on the inside of the tube and was so excessive popped off while drive yes it was on tight. Removed the grease and worked fine. So beware that there will be some fabrication required apron install . I do like it when it's all done.

    Makes a difference

I bought my '08 with a flowmaster axleback system and no real performance mods. I bought the tuner about six months later - that made a huge difference. Six months after that, I added this air kit. I researched and in a number of spots, folks said it was the best one on the market, though I think with any plastic-tubed kit (not metal - metal conducts and holds heat), you'd see similar results. I purposely did things this way, because I wanted to see what the performance gains were separately from the tuner and the air kit. The tuner makes the biggest far. But, adding the air kit and retuning for it still gave me some additional dyno to prove it, but I can tell. Also, the car sounded great with just the exhaust, but the CAI added a lower, growlier note to it.

Great looking CAI, cant speak for the HP gains, haven not been able to dyno it yet. The Installation of this product is Horrible. Speaking for the shroud, its a horrible design, the installation was not the easiest, and i have installed plenty of CAI before. I had to squeeze the heat shield between hoses and lines and wires for it to fit right. the bolt supplied to attach the shield to the fan and radiator is not the right fit, had to use stock and that was too short but i made it work. the design of the air filter and the intake tube is not ideal due to it sloping down, its hard to get the filter in and out. im not sure if the hose intake plunge at the bottom is supposed to swivel but it makes me a little uneasy. the rubber sleeve could be a little wider in my opinion. other than that, the car mad a beautiful growl went i turned on the ignition, looks great! no leaks, and im looking forward to dyno, find out if i broke 350HP on my gt. i do recommend it to others.

    Noticeable difference!!

Took a little less then 30 minutes to completely remove the factory air box and replace it with this cai. After installing I flashed the 93 octane tune and changed the tune to add this intake on it. There was definitely a difference in performance after installing it. Couldn't give exact numbers but throttle response is definitely increased! Also my gas mileage has increased 2.5mpg on highway which I drive 90 miles daily. It also adds a very nice appearance under the hood, everything mounts up perfectly. I would highly suggest this and a tune for some start up performance mods. Jlt makes a very durable intake and this has the biggest intake housing out of all the others. American muscle hasn't let me down! Thank you guys for the fast shipping and amazing customer support!

    Poor fit

I bought this with the SCT package. I am happy with the purchase but mostly because of the tuner. The air intake itself leaves much to be desired. The fitting for the vacuum hose is loose and spins freely. When I try to tighten it it slips on the threads of the intake which means it's stripped, because it's just a hole in the plastic tube. The wire mesh of the filter rubs the ABS hard lines and I cannot adjust for it not to no matter what. A different style filter should fix this. The heat shield is a tight fit and the instructions tell you to just smash it between the hoses. Poor fit. I will give it a high rating for performance since it works fine as an air intake when used with the tuner. Overall it does what it's suppose to at a lower price but I would spend more for a higher quality part with better fit and finish if I could do it over again.

    Expected more..

This intake fits and looks fantastic. The performance gains however are less than expected on my daily driven 07 gt. I already had a muffler delete and tune, and did not see much of a gain with the intake and new tune. It does however give the exhaust a deeper note and sounds great at WOT.

Make sure to wear a diaper...

I'll first address a few concerns. If you have an aftermarket throttle body, you've got NOTHING to worry about other than getting a new metal clamp. The rubber fitting for the throttle body fits right over my BBK, and I had a 2" clamp on hand, which I had to cut down originally as even that was too long. All you do is go to the plumbing section of your local hardware store, get a 1.5" or 2" hose clamp, and you're good. Second, this thing DOES gain over the JLT previously released. I've seen the dynos, and I just felt it. I'd highly recommend this and a tune from Bama, you will not regret it!

RWHP and RWTQ Gains with 93 Tune.

Went from plus or minus 245RWHP and 245RWTQ to plus or minus 277RWHP and 297RWTQ after installing this JLT 3 with a 93 Race tune with an auto trans. Sence this is a JLT review I can say that I did before and after dyno pulls with and with out the jlt while the race tune was still onboard and got on average 12RWHP and only 8RWTQ numbers for just what the intake did. So I would say other high flow mods would better accept the incoming air making the JLT 3 that much more needed.
