    Review & Install Video

Justin: Hey, everybody. I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com. And I'm going to be breaking down a very budget-friendly catback system for your S550. I'm taking a closer look at the MBRP street catback exhaust system, fitting all 2015 GT's. MBRP is a Canadian-based performance exhaust company that's been making exhaust systems for a wide variety of applications for nearly two decades. Now their systems are definitely known to be on the more aggressive side, and as you guys heard, even though this is their street system, it still offers plenty of bark for that low muscle car rumble, thanks to the included H-pipe. A big thing I do want to point out here, though, with the MBRP systems is the price. Now as I mentioned at the beginning of this video, these things really do offer a great bang for your buck, and they come in at nearly half of the price of some other catback systems available for your 2015 GT. Another thing to point out here, when choosing a street system for your S550, you do have a few options here at American Muscle, including a full blacked-out version like you see here. They also offer a fully polished version of the stainless steel polished mufflers and polished tips. And if you're really looking to save a few bucks, well then they do offer a aluminized steel tubing version, which is basically the same exhaust I have with me here, but utilizes aluminized steel tubing in place of the stainless steel tubing, if you're looking to keep things on a very tight budget. All right. With that all out of the way, guys. Lets get into some of the details here with the MBRP street system. You are going to be looking at 3" mandrel-bent stainless steel tubing again with this kit here, leading into the street series mufflers and then out the 4 1/2" slash cut tips, etched with that MBRP logo. Now since this kit does utilize a true H-pipe design here, you are going to get that low, thumping muscle car tone that's typical when using an H-pipe, as opposed to that raspiness that comes along with an X-pipe. You'll be happy to know that catback installs with a 2015 Mustang are definitely much easier, compared to older generations, thanks largely in part to that new independent rear suspension, meaning there's no over axle pipes or anything like that. And because the MBRP is a direct bolt-on modification, meaning you don't have to cut whatsoever, you should be able to get this thing knocked out in under two hours, especially if you're working with a buddy. So if you guys are looking to crank up the volume on that new GT, but you want to leave some money left over for a few other mods, then be sure to check out the full MBRP lineup here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Classic Muscle Car Exhaust Note. Now you can give your coyote powered Mustang the aggressive exhaust note of classic muscle car with a MBRP Street Cat-Back Exhaust System that has been specifically tuned to get the optimal sound from your 2015-2017 GT Mustang. This catback not only sounds great, but also improves exhaust flow with the included H-Pipe for an increase in rear wheel horsepower and torque.

Muscle Car Rumble. The included H-Pipe not only helps increase power, but it also adds a deep muscle car rumble to the sound of your exhaust with its classic "H" crossover pipe design.

Durable Aluminized Steel Construction. Constructed from 3" diameter aluminized steel tubing for strength and corrosion resistance, this MBRP Cat-Back exhaust system features two street mufflers that end with 4.5" polished 304 stainless steel slant cut exhaust tips. As an added bonus the tips are etched with the "MBRP" logo for true custom styling.

Direct Bolt-On Installation. Engineered to be a direct upgrade replacement for your Mustangs factory exhaust, the MBRP Street Cat-Back Exhaust Kit easily bolts up in the stock location with no modifications required.

Application. This MBRP Aluminized Steel Street Cat-Back Exhaust Kit is designed to fit all 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the 5.0L 4V coyote engine. It is available for both Fastback and Convertible models - Please select from the option field above.

To those who already own this exhaust system, how is the drone on this? I used to have a 2016 v6 with outlaw axle backs and the drone was terrible, I hated it so much, is this bearable with this one?

    Rush

    • The MBRP Black Series Cat-Back Exhaust has little to no drone at any speed. MBRP builds mufflers specific for the vehicle, and drone is one of the many attributes they account for, with having no drone being their ideal goal.

Since this is a direct bolt-on for the factor set-up, how does this work with MBRP 3" long tube headers? The headers say they're designed to go with an MBRP cat-back, but they have a 3" connection where it looks like these are smaller to accommodate the factory headers. I could not seem to find an MBRP product that would bolt up to their 3" long tube headers. Thanks!

    sleeperstang

    • There would be a step down used to allow them to fit together and bolt up correctly. In the case of an S550 you have adapter tubes that come off of the headers that will accommodate the size needed to bolt these up.

Could anyone tell me about the boxes that the exhaust came in? I'm trying to figure out if I can fit them in my mustang with the back seats down, or if I'm going to need someone to haul them for me when I take it to get it installed. Any help is appreciated!!

    • It is not going to arrive pre-put-together inside the box, so you shouldn't have a problem fitting this inside of your Mustang.

I am looking at this and the Stainless Works Retro Chambered Cat-back w/ H-Pipe. The SW says it shaves off 22lbs, how does the MBRP stack up in overall weight? Will it take off as much, more or less than the SW? And what about power gain comparisons? Thanks.

    kyleS550

    • The Stainless Works 3 in Retro Chambered Cat-Back Exhaust w/ H-Pipe - Fastback (15-17 GT), item # 384842, (http://www.americanmuscle.com/stainlessworks-catback-sm-2015gt.html) weighs approximately 64 pounds. The MBRP Street Cat-Back Exhaust w/ H-Pipe - Stainless Steel weighs approximately 61 pounds. Both are significantly lighter than the stock exhaust system. Both of these Cat-Backs will give you a great power gain when installed with other accommodating parts and a custom tune.

I have the base gt. I see in some pictures some have the base without much less prominent valence (like me) and others have the premium or pp version with a full rear valence. The fitment in the pics is really variable. Some with the larger valence protrude much more. Is this adjustable and to what degree ? What’s the min and max inches length it will protrude from a base Gt? I know it won’t be flush. I want to make sure what I see in pics was adjusted vs luck of the draw with pipe length.

Review from MBRP XP Series Cat-Back Exhaust w/ H-Pipe - Street Version (15-17 GT)

Louder than I thought- lovin it!

If this the street version, I picked the right one over the "race version". The exhaust crackles on startup, but settles into a low throat-ed burble soon after. On anything other than mild acceleration after being under go, it is obvious that the beast has been awaken. Exhaust noise can be gloriously brought forth with a quick jab of the right pedal. But, on the other hand, while cruising, there is a little more than mild increase in NVH. When under full throttle, however, get ready for for the crackle supported by a bass lower louder than stock. Not as profound as I would want, but I guess you have to live with that if you want a decent sounding exhaust on acceleration, but don't want drone that is headache inducing. Underpasses are my new thing with this exhaust. Everybody's exhaust sounds louder in confined space, but-dear God- this exhaust will overcome all others on full throttle. It is an attention getter. Last thoughts: This is a stainless steel catback for a littlte over 600 bucks. Fit and finish are spot on for that amount- or more. But if a polished and perfect musclecar sound, with acceptable drone at cruising speed for long trips without having to shift to a lower gear, then this is not for you. This is a quality exhaust that will bring smiles to the face of Mustang owners that relish the musclecar tradition- big horsepower, pedestrian pricing, mass production- and can accept their car for what it is.

      Loud but not Obnoxious!

Didn't feel like spending $1500 on a cat back exhaust so this seemed like a good alternative after seeing this system listed as a one of the "Best Of" cat backs. I didn't want to do just an axle back since it requires cutting the pipes on S550's. Last car was 2011 5.0 and I had the Roush axle back on that car. The MBRP is not quite as loud as the Roush, but still has a solid deep sound. Crackles on start up, and under WOT is plenty loud. No drone during regular driving at 70 MPH. Install was easy as I put the car on a lift and had a buddy to help with the pipes. Taking off stock system is a 2 man job since it one giant piece and weight a good 75 lbs. Fit and finish was perfect and I am completely satisfied with the exhaust system as a whole!

      Should have done this first....

Prior to purchasing this, I bought the Mishimoto H-pipe and used that with the stock mufflers, sounded good, but I wanted more sound. I then purchased the Pypes Pype Bomb to replace the stock mufflers, I got sound alright along with headache inducing drone!! I expected some drone with that set-up, but nothing like what I got. So, I then purchased this set-up. I should have gone with this first, the install was super easy, less than an hour and the sound is awesome, the headache inducing drone is also gone, you get some with this set-up, but it's nothing compared to my last set-up. For the money, you just can't go wrong with this system.

      Holy smokes, it can scream...

Love it, love it, love it... Definitely the head turner (that cop the other day also agreed but it was my fault for being dumb). Can't beat that deep growl at startup. Also, pinging the throttle on a down shift has become my favorite hobby. Another one: revving like a madman in a tunnel/underpass... I'm not joking, it startled me the first time with the windows down, LOUD. In the mean time it's very tame in the low RPMs so you can fly under the radar if you so desire (but why would you). One piece of advice, make sure you pull the tips out at least an inch clear of the bumper or you will melt the reflectors (I never liked them anyway). At the end of the day, you can't beat the value: half the price for that rumble?!

Review from MBRP XP Series Cat-Back Exhaust w/ H-Pipe - Street Version (15-17 GT)

      Amazing bang for your buck

The MBRP cat-back system is a great exhaust for the money and is comparable to other systems costing A LOT more. MBRP is a Canadian company and has been in the aftermarket exhaust business for over 17 years. This system includes FULL 3" tubing, an h-pipe, polished mufflers and super polished 4.5" tips, which can be adjusted in or out from the rear facia (something many systems don't offer and is a must in my opinion, since some people don't like their exhaust tips sticking out too far). As for install, it's super easy and fits PERFECTLY. The biggest tip I can give during install is make sure the h-pipe is completely flat and LEVEL, otherwise you will have a hard time getting the tips to be centered in the rear facia. Also don't tighten everything down until AFTER you are happy with the rear tip placement. An extra set of hands will help with the final part of the install/placement. Detailed instructions are also included. As for the sound, I absolutely love it. What I love most about this system are the various tones and sounds at different rpm levels and throttle positions. Under normal driving it sounds nice and deep, and at full throttle it sounds LOUD and ANGRY. And in-between, whether coasting or in the upper rpm's, well it sounds just like a V8 should. The tone is deep and not raspy like some other systems. I'd say this is gives that classic Mustang sound pre-2011 Coyote. I've had several compliments on it already, the latest from the fuel delivery truck driver when I pulled in for gas. There is maybe a tiny hint of drone at 1500-ish rpm's in 6th when accelerating, but it's very, very minimal and perfectly acceptable for a full cat-back system that sounds this good. The exhaust is pretty quiet at highway speeds in 6th and isn't annoying at all. If you want loud, just downshift to 3rd or 4th :) . I recommend the street version vs the race as that system definitely has drone and is louder too. If you're considering the Roush axle-back like I was, just spend a bit extra and get this, a proper cat-back system that will really open up your big bad V8.

      Almost perfect

I've owned 4 mustangs over the years, some of the mods I've made have been extreme some modest and I've made my fair share of mistakes. The MBRP catback when you've gone extreme is a step down but after spending stupid amounts of money trying to find the perfect tone I have come to the conclusion that this exhaust is an amazing neutral ground, not overly dynamic at idle or cold start but phenomenal when driving. This is the perfect exhaust for someone looking for a sporty, nasty sound when getting on it but want to hear your cabin mates when just cruising. I recently had the flow master outlaw on a 13 GT and loved the idle, hated the drone, hope this review helps. Just a small note, I've spent thousands of dollars from American Muscle and hands down one of the best companies I have ever had the pleasure to deal with.... thank you AM, it's nice in our day and age to deal with people who care about what they do!!!

Low grumble, screams when you want it.

Has a nice low grumble at idle and deep muscle tones during normal acceleration, low RPMs it's a few notches louder than stock, but not at all "loud". When you really punch on it and get into the upper RPMs it can scream and it sounds freaking cool. It's not super loud, but you will definitely turn heads and it's much louder than stock. It's honestly a great balance of tone/volume. In the first week I've already gotten handfuls of compliments, my favorite being "it sounds exactly what a Mustang should sound like." Can't beat the price either.

Great agressive tone without being to loud

I was a little skeptical buying this exhaust because the price is half that of others like it. But let me tell you there is nothing cheap looking or sounding about it. Great deep, aggressive tone at startup and the lower revs and when you give it some gas the system howls like a v8 should. This isn't an overly loud exhaust which is exactly what i was looking for. Aggressive sounding while not being annoying to others around.

Had this installed at the local Ford dealership without incident. Immediate and loud improvement over standard exhaust! As others have posted, keep it under 4K, and this purrs with a low, throaty growl. Let the horses run over 4K and a demon is summoned and released underneath the car... and he's angry!

I wasn't sure which catback system to buy. I was reluctant to purchase this one because it's half the price of most others. I certainly don't regret purchasing this one! I am extremely pleased! Listen to what your GT has to say

Exhaust and h-pipe bring your Mustang to life. The exhaust is loud, but not obnoxious. I daily my GT in Wisconsin so every start is a cold start, and my garage is below my neighbors (they have yet to complain about how loud it is, but maybe they are just a fan of American Muscle). The sound is a perfect volume level but I wouldn't say that it has a very sophisticated note. Getting a cat-back for near axle-back pricing was a nice alternative to cutting my stock exhaust up for the axle-back In the case that I want to swap it out prior to selling car etc. Once the car is on jack stands install took about 1hr.
