Daily Driver Friendly. This SPEC Stage 1 Clutch is designed for bolt-on naturally aspirated and mildly modified forced induction engines. It's best suited to 'Stangs that see daily driver duty and occasional track use, since it offers the most friendly pedal feel combined with SPEC's legendary durability.

    Technical Notes:

    • The 2005-2010 Mustang uses a concentric slave cylinder instead of a conventional throwout bearing.
    • Therefore this clutch kit will not include a throwout bearing.
    • V6's built from 2005 to December 2006 will use Spec flywheel part# SF66A or can reuse the factory flywheel with the SF66 Clutch.
    • V6's built from January 2007 to June 6th 2007 must use Spec flywheel part# SF66A with the SF66 Clutch.
    • V6's built from June 6th 2007 to present must use Spec flywheel part# SF66A-2 with the SF66 Clutch.

change Flywheel (lighter)is it important ?

    • While you may be able to resurface your factory flywheel, we highly recommend getting a matching Spec flywheel for the best fitment and performance, as resurfacing the factory flywheel may not provide the correct fit. We offer the Spec Billet Aluminum Flywheel, item number 60029, which is a match to this clutch and can be found here: https://www.americanmuscle.com/spec-aluminum-flywheel-05v6.html

Does the June 2007 cutoff represent the production year or model year? I have a 2007 V6 mustang, but it was made in November of 2006. Should i buy this or would it fall into the other category as it would technically be a 2007 mustang produced in november?

    • The cutoff date would refer to the actual manufacture date of your Mustang. Since your Mustang was manufactured in November of 2006, this Spec Stage 1 Clutch would fit.

      Worse than OEM

I put the Spec Clutch and lightweight flywheel in my 2005 v6, after about 700 miles *still in the break in period* the car slowly but surely became undriveable. After bleeding the clutch again, and flushing the transmission fluid and nothing seeming to help-- I last resorted in taking it to the shop to figure out the issue. Upon pulling the transmission and examining the flywheel and clutch, it was evident that one of the clutch springs had came loose and cut grooves into the flywheel. I contacted Spec for the warranty (because it was within the 120 days after the purchase date), sent in pictures and told them what happened and was basically told that it was 'normal wear and tear,' which is not even remotely true. Then I was told that I would need to spend my own money to send in the faulty parts with no guarantee that Spec would send out new parts instead of the old faulty parts. Not to mention, every person at Spec that I've spoken to has given me nothing but god awful customer service.

      Works great

Pretty easy install. I had the flywheel resurfaced and installed a new pilot bearing in the flywheel. Ended up getting the pilot bearing from local Ford Dealer. Couldn’t find the correct one online. The alignment tool worked great. I was careful to have it perpendicular to the clutch when I tightened the pressure plate. Transmission slid right in. The clutch has a softer pedal feel than the factory. Other guys told me this is typical of Spec.

      Good improvement

The difference can be noted. Tires now screech when second gear is applied and pedal feel softer. But now the input bearing sounds when engine gets warm. So keep in mind that probably your transmission will need be worked too after this modification.

Very strong clutch love it, only had to resurface my flywheel so I don't have to buy a new one, I would recommend people to buy a new throwout bearinw with your need clutch,

      Great replacement!

My old clutch was on its last breath. Shifting was terrible and I'd always here a squeal when going into first. Not only is that gone but I feel a slight increase in power when I launch into each gear! Great for a daily driver

      Night and day difference

After 142K miles on the original clutch I decided it was time for swap and selected the Spec stage 1 clutch with aluminum flywheel. Everything fit perfectly, stock OEM hydraulic throw-out bearing can be used (of course recommend you replace if doing this job), and the flywheel even came with the pilot bearing already seated. The first time you fire the car up though BE WARNED, this thing BITES HARD. Of course a change in pedal feel is expected with any clutch upgrade but holy smokes batman, as someone who has driven nothing but a manual daily for over 15 years I stalled the vehicle 4 times in rapid succession trying to get a feel for things. Still in the recommended 500 mile break in period so cant speak to longevity but will say once you become familiar with the new pedal feel you will definitely enjoy this setup.

      No pressure

I chose this as replacement for my OEM clutch under the understanding it would have a similar feel to the stock clutch. Quite the opposite and very dissatisfying. My stock clutch felt very stiff/firm in a good way. I could tell when it was engaged and disengaged. This Spec clutch has way too much give and I have to press (which is a strong word as it feels like it just falls now) the pedal completely to the floor now before I can shift.

      Holy light clutch batman!

I'm just going to start by saying this clutch is reeeeeaaaaally light if you going from the factory clutch like I did. Seriously, my buddy and I spent probably an hour more than we needed wondering what was "wrong" with the clutch and why it was taking so long to bleed it. But the product itself is excellent, there were no issues in the install (took maybe 10 min to put the disc and plate in and tighten all the bolts) it's really easy to use and it grips really well, it's an excellent replacement to the stock clutch.

      Excellent upgrade

I have a 2006 v6. It took the shop only a few hours and it is great. It'll take you a second to get use to it. It is like driving a whole new car. I also got the flywheel. I usually not one to believe the reviews and what but definitely a great buy.

      Worst than stock

This clutch takes a while to break in and takes a lot of work. It slips and doesn't grab right like a regular clutch and gives that old burnt clutch smell every time I take off and trust me it's not my driving. When i tried explaning that to the spec customer service they were stubborn and just kept talking back and didn't help me at all I do not recommend this clutch

      First impression: Stall the engine:/

Just got my car back from the shop today and I must say wow! There is a huge difference in the shifting of gears, especially when starting in first. When I first started the car and started to release the clutch, it jerked really hard and stalled on me. lol. you let off about an inch and the clutch is fully released. I have to get used to it but I definitely love the difference. I would recommend this clutch to anyone. It has a great grip and the only down side I see to it is that it cost twice as much as it would if were a V8 clutch. Other than that, Wow! Thanks AM.

      Clutch Install

The Clutch is great. I have had no problems with it at all. This was my first install on one of the newer S197 mustangs. The instructions were ok with one issue that really took a while to work out. The instructions called for releasing a clip that held the hydraulic clutch line to the slave cylinder. The description could use a lot more detail especially in how exactly to do that it took a long time to both get the clip out and to reinstall it. As simple as it seems that ended up being the most challenging task of the install. Overall though the clutch and pressure plate install went well. I would do it again

This clutch is great! It has much more pull than the factory clutch and it is well worth the price, considering that it was only a little more than the Ford OEM part. Great Buy!

      go to stage II

The flywheel which matches is great, but that's a different review. The stage I clutch lasted 3 months, after breaking it in for 500 miles with soft around town driving, it felt fine. But as time went on, it slipped more and more. It wasn't glazed when I pulled it out. It has no improvement over stock. If any at all.

I am sorry to hear that you didn't have great luck with the Stage 1 clutch. This clutch is meant generally as a daily driven clutch on a non-modded or slightly modified Mustang. If your car has more power than this Stage 1 could handle, then it could cause the slippage problem and the reason why you have now found the Stage 2 to be better suited for your application. The Stage 1 was just too weak for your power range unfortunately. I am glad to hear though that you are happy with the Stage 2 you upgraded to.

      on/off switch

I had a Friend who is a mechanic install the clutch for me, he was really happy with the fit. The pedal is much lighter to throw down than the stock clutch which has made it a lot nicer of a daily driver. The actual disengage part of the pedal throw is only an inch or two which is great when you pounding through the gears. And the grab is far beyond what the stock clutch offers. I have a V6 and having no problem getting rubber all thru second. Excellent part, its only $100 more than a stock clutch at shop cost, so unless you have a connection it'll probably be cheaper than the stock part after markup. Definately recommend this part.

It's not what I would recommend for the lightly modified Mustang V6. Maybe as a stock daily driver, but it hasn't lasted any better than stock.
