Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my review of BBK's Long Tube Headers, available for 2011 and up GT Mustangs. These BBK long tube headers are going to be a good option for the guys out there that are looking for a more budget-friendly long tube header for a more heavily-modified car, like one with forced induction or a nitrous car. And for someone that wants a ceramic coated header, the runners on these headers are 1 7/8 inch, which is slightly different than the 1 3/4 inch offering, and the smaller diameter is traditionally going to be a better option for naturally aspirated cars or those with mild bolt-ons. So just keep that in mind when shopping for long tubes. So this is a ceramic coated header, which is going to be different than a chrome header. BBK does offer these same headers in chrome if you're looking for a more polished finish, and chrome headers are going to be a little less expensive. But the ceramic coating's going to reduce underhood temperatures, and it helps to improve the flow of the exhaust gases, because the coating forces the header gas to only expand one way, and that's out the back of the exhaust. And that's also why you see claims that ceramic coating is going to help increase horsepower. The exhaust gets pushed out faster thanks to the coating, which then makes room for fresh air to enter the cylinders faster. The ceramic coating is also going to prevent any corrosion in the headers and keep them looking better for longer as opposed to chrome or polished headers. The ceramic coating can dull over time though, but the coating isn't going to come off or anything. It just changes in color slightly. And you can see here that BBK gives these headers a polished silver coating, so I'm just going to go ahead and say that over time this is probably going to dull. If you're not really into that dull appearance, you do have the option of the chrome headers like I said before. These are made from CNC mandrel bent tubing, which is going to help with smoother air delivery. The header flanges are one piece and laser cut, which is going to help give them strength and going to keep them from leaking. Like I said before, these are off road headers. And since we're on the subject of cats, let's talk about the rest of your exhaust set-up. Whenever you go from a shorty of factory header set up to a long tube, you are going to need to change your mid pipe to a shorty mid pipe, or if you have an S550, you're going to be looking at header adapter mid pipes. Now with both mid pipe types you will have a choice of going catted or non-catted, and they're going to be three-inch down to two and a half inches for a factory or aftermarket cat-back. The long tubes alone are going to change the sound of your exhaust, and when you combine that with changing your mid pipe, you can expect a pretty big difference in sound here. Obviously, if you go uncatted all the way, it's going to be louder than if you stick to high flow cats, but either way you're looking at a brand new sound and tone when you're done. So, if we move onto price, we have to kind of face it at this point and know that long tube headers are going to be a solid investment. They're pricey and difficult to install, but I'd say that they're worth it at the end of the day. The options from BBK are definitely more affordable than others out there, especially if you're shopping for an S550. If you are, you'll notice that BBK is the only company currently producing long tubes for under a thousand bucks, and even if you have an S197, you're still looking at a grand if you want to go with the big players like Kooks, LTH, Borla, Stainless Works. And then also keep in mind that if you don't already have a shorty mid pipe, you're going to need a little cash for that as well. But at the end of the day, you're looking at both power and sound gains here. In fact, you can expect gains of 20-25 wheel horse, depending on your set up and tune, in addition to an awesome change in your exhaust tone. And speaking of a tune, you will need a tune after the install here. Anytime you go with a serious mod like this you can pretty much expect to need a tune along with it. As for the install, there's no way to sugarcoat this one, guys, and I don't say this often, but if you don't have a helping hand or don't have much experience, it might be better to just take the car to the shop for the install. If you do tackle this yourself, it's going to be a full three-out-of-three wrenches on the scale and a day in the garage. You can do it on jack stands, but a lift will make it easier for sure. So, wrapping things up here, the BBK long tubes are 1 7/8 diameter, they come in either chrome or with a ceramic coating, and they're going to offer some performance and sound gains. You will need to grab a shorty mid pipe, and while long tubes are expensive overall, these ones right here are some of the most budget friendly ones that you can find out there on the market. You can check them out more online for yourself right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

More Horsepower and Torque. A set of BBK 1-7/8" Ceramic Coated Long Tube Headers are designed to improve your Coyote powered Mustang's exhaust flow, when compared to the restrictive stock cast iron manifolds. BBK's 1-7/8" Headers are specifically engineered for use on Nitrous and Force Inducted applications for a significant increase in rear wheel horse power and torque.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduces under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

Quality Construction. BBK Long Tube Exhaust Headers are manufactured from 1-7/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. They feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Required Tuner Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Off-Road Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle highly recommends a custom tune with a Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Additional Required S197 Upgrades. Installation of these BBK Long Tube Headers on a 2011-2014 S197 GT/BOSS Mustang will require the use of a BBK Shorty Midpipe part# 1655 or 1658. Please see options listed above.

Additional Required S550 Upgrades. Installation of these BBK Long Tube Headers on a 2015-2017 S550 GT Mustang will require the use of a set of BBK Long Tube Header Adapter Mid-Pipes part# 1816 or 18160 and an O2 Extension Harnesses(Sold Separately) and Hardware Kit part# 16332. Please see options listed above.

Application. These BBK 1-7/8" Ceramic Coated Long Tube Headers are specifically designed to fit the 2011-2017 GT and Boss 302 Mustangs equipped with the Coyote 4 valve 5.0L V8 engine. These Headers are intended for left hand drive applications only.

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only.

I have a 17 GT with an MBRP cat back now. Are these headers a direct bolt on?

      • The BBK 1-7/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers would bolt right up to your block, And the Mid-pipe you get would bolt up to your catback. Will 3inch mid pipes fit these headers?

      • That depends on your Mustang, but generally the answer is yes. If you have an 11-14, BBK offers a 3 inch midpipe specifically designed for these headers. If you have a 15+ BBK offers 3 inch connector piping, which 3 inch midpipes indeed fit with.

          Great mod!

I had purchased these headers along with the bbk catted x pipe. First of let me just say that these headers are the real deal! I had wanted to purchase them for a long time and was finally able to. They sound really great and really gives my car a sound. It really does turn heads and has been receiving nothing but compliments everywhere I go. I wanted an exhaust that would be loud, but wouldn't be obnxious. With these headers and the catted x pipe you can still have a conversation with your passenger. If you wanted to go catless then for sure your car would be much louder. However, for my purpose and having a daily driver these headers are great!! My friend could hear me from blocks away. I also felt a nice increase in horsepower with these headers. The car pulls a lot harder. However, now I will discuss the downside to these headers and that is the install. I had known how painful it was for a long time prior to purchasing them. If you are doing it on jack stands like I did then all I have to say is don't start the install too late if you need the car. It did take a lot of work and I had 2 other people helping me. The main issues is clearence. The drivers side was painful to remove and install. But the passenger side took a very long time. You have no room from the top to do anything. Which is why it is required that you remove motor mounts and jack up the motor. You have to do this in order to both remove and install the headers. There was also no room to even tighten them due to the pipes being in the way on the header. I also had to remove the starter, motor mounts, disconnect steering column etc etc. The install took me a few days doing it a few hours each day. It also included removing and manipulating many things in order to make everything work. It was difficult due to clearence as well as items that you have to remove. It is doable and I sure did it, but it will take time so make sure that you are ready for it. Also, upper o2 extensions are required for these headers. The post cat o2 extensions are also required. However, I did not need them because I was able to bypass it. The o2 cable going to the harness was tapped and you can cut the tape and run the sensors directly to the x pipe. However, becareful cutting it and it will take some time. Otherwise, just buy the o2 sensor extensions. They are worth it and will definitely be a good set up especially if you have other mods such as an CAI and the Boss 302 intake manifold.

          Great Long tubes!

I Love, love, love these headers! I had a friend who is also a working Ford certified mechanic install on another’s friends lift and it took the entire day despite having the tools and lift. There were unexpected delays with incorrect exhaust bolts sent (wrong thread pitch) and other minor issues. Once installed with a BBK off road exhaust kit and O2 extender harnesses it was and amazing sound to hear upon cold start-up. It’s very loud with an SR X-pipe and flowmaster outlaws. I am going to replace the outlaws with flowmaster Flowmaster Super 44 Mufflers - 2.50 Center In 2.50 Offset Out. Now its just obnoxiously loud and too much noise for even me. Get someone who knows headers and has done them before too to do it and have patience too, it’s a whole day of work and worth every penny too once installed. Now to tune it and make even more HP and add more goodies for even more HP! Get these long tubes and you will have $ left to buy more mods!

          Great headers

I paired these with the 3" Borla Atak cat back exhaust and it is extremely loud. I got the off-ride bbk down pipe. I personally love it but its not for everyone. They sound extremely clean though for the volume they produce. I actually did gain a good amount of performance with them as well. Cold starts are amazing. Idling after the car warms up is beautiful. Overall reallllllly great addition to your mustang. Shop did it in one day for 600 flat. For some videos of how it sounds you can follow my ig @Skyman_jojo.

I paired these with a catted mid pipe, X pipe and Borla atak mufflers sound is amazing. if you want to cruise and be quiet you can but when you get on it... Holy smokes its loud! I had Watson Engineering do the instal they are the people American Muscle did the video on ford performance a few months back. they said instal went smooth other than issues with bolt clearance and having to move an ac line temporally out of the way. took them just about 7 hours total to have it wrapped up.

          Sound is bliss

Had a great time installing these bad boys. Set aside a day when you have nothing else to do and get to it. Do yourself a favor and remove the K member. Its 8 bolts that will make your life way easier. With the K member out the old manifolds were a breeze to remove and the new LTH were easy, and I mean easy, to put in and tighten down.

          Fantastic fit and quality

My mechanic told me that these were a great fit, great quality, able to use the stock/oem block bolts, sensors all ligned up. He has not installed these headers on a 2014 coyote before, but has installed on various other models, and he liked the way everything went. It took them 6.5 hours. I love the sound and performance so far. These are connected to the BBK catted x-pipe, to the Pypes bomb system. Very loud, it screems at around 4,000 RPM with a high pitched scratchy roar, love it. I can't wait to get my new tires and take it to the track.

          Great Buy

Had zero problems with installing these in my drive way on jackstands over a weekend. I paired these up with the BBK off-road xpipe. The fit and finish are excellent. I noticed a significant power gain. After reading other reviews I expected my car to be loud as heck, but its actually very mild at part throttle. I think it really depends on which axle back you are running (I have the RTR axle back). My car doesnt sound raspy like most other mustangs I've heard, in fact its quite throaty. Im very pleased with these and would recommend them!

Look and sound great. I had a shop install them and they actually recommended these over some higher priced options, because they knew they would fit without any unexpected issues. Power seems up in the higher rpm ranges and the sound is completely different. It’s much louder and just sounds mean.
