Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with, here with my review of BBK's Long Tube Headers, available for 2011 and up GT Mustangs. These BBK long tube headers are going to be a good option for the guys out there that are looking for a more budget-friendly long tube header for a more heavily-modified car, like one with forced induction or a nitrous car. And for someone that wants a ceramic coated header, the runners on these headers are 1 7/8 inch, which is slightly different than the 1 3/4 inch offering, and the smaller diameter is traditionally going to be a better option for naturally aspirated cars or those with mild bolt-ons. So just keep that in mind when shopping for long tubes. So this is a ceramic coated header, which is going to be different than a chrome header. BBK does offer these same headers in chrome if you're looking for a more polished finish, and chrome headers are going to be a little less expensive. But the ceramic coating's going to reduce underhood temperatures, and it helps to improve the flow of the exhaust gases, because the coating forces the header gas to only expand one way, and that's out the back of the exhaust. And that's also why you see claims that ceramic coating is going to help increase horsepower. The exhaust gets pushed out faster thanks to the coating, which then makes room for fresh air to enter the cylinders faster. The ceramic coating is also going to prevent any corrosion in the headers and keep them looking better for longer as opposed to chrome or polished headers. The ceramic coating can dull over time though, but the coating isn't going to come off or anything. It just changes in color slightly. And you can see here that BBK gives these headers a polished silver coating, so I'm just going to go ahead and say that over time this is probably going to dull. If you're not really into that dull appearance, you do have the option of the chrome headers like I said before. These are made from CNC mandrel bent tubing, which is going to help with smoother air delivery. The header flanges are one piece and laser cut, which is going to help give them strength and going to keep them from leaking. Like I said before, these are off road headers. And since we're on the subject of cats, let's talk about the rest of your exhaust set-up. Whenever you go from a shorty of factory header set up to a long tube, you are going to need to change your mid pipe to a shorty mid pipe, or if you have an S550, you're going to be looking at header adapter mid pipes. Now with both mid pipe types you will have a choice of going catted or non-catted, and they're going to be three-inch down to two and a half inches for a factory or aftermarket cat-back. The long tubes alone are going to change the sound of your exhaust, and when you combine that with changing your mid pipe, you can expect a pretty big difference in sound here. Obviously, if you go uncatted all the way, it's going to be louder than if you stick to high flow cats, but either way you're looking at a brand new sound and tone when you're done. So, if we move onto price, we have to kind of face it at this point and know that long tube headers are going to be a solid investment. They're pricey and difficult to install, but I'd say that they're worth it at the end of the day. The options from BBK are definitely more affordable than others out there, especially if you're shopping for an S550. If you are, you'll notice that BBK is the only company currently producing long tubes for under a thousand bucks, and even if you have an S197, you're still looking at a grand if you want to go with the big players like Kooks, LTH, Borla, Stainless Works. And then also keep in mind that if you don't already have a shorty mid pipe, you're going to need a little cash for that as well. But at the end of the day, you're looking at both power and sound gains here. In fact, you can expect gains of 20-25 wheel horse, depending on your set up and tune, in addition to an awesome change in your exhaust tone. And speaking of a tune, you will need a tune after the install here. Anytime you go with a serious mod like this you can pretty much expect to need a tune along with it. As for the install, there's no way to sugarcoat this one, guys, and I don't say this often, but if you don't have a helping hand or don't have much experience, it might be better to just take the car to the shop for the install. If you do tackle this yourself, it's going to be a full three-out-of-three wrenches on the scale and a day in the garage. You can do it on jack stands, but a lift will make it easier for sure. So, wrapping things up here, the BBK long tubes are 1 7/8 diameter, they come in either chrome or with a ceramic coating, and they're going to offer some performance and sound gains. You will need to grab a shorty mid pipe, and while long tubes are expensive overall, these ones right here are some of the most budget friendly ones that you can find out there on the market. You can check them out more online for yourself right here at

More Horsepower and Torque. A set of BBK 1-7/8" Ceramic Coated Long Tube Headers are designed to improve your Coyote powered Mustang's exhaust flow, when compared to the restrictive stock cast iron manifolds. BBK's 1-7/8" Headers are specifically engineered for use on Nitrous and Force Inducted applications for a significant increase in rear wheel horse power and torque.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduces under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

Quality Construction. BBK Long Tube Exhaust Headers are manufactured from 1-7/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. They feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Required Tuner Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Off-Road Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle highly recommends a Bama custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Additional Required S197 Upgrades. Installation of these BBK Long Tube Headers on a 2011-2014 S197 GT/BOSS Mustang will require the use of a BBK Shorty Midpipe part# 1655 or 1658. Please see options listed above.

Additional Required S550 Upgrades. Installation of these BBK Long Tube Headers on a 2015-2017 S550 GT Mustang will require the use of a set of BBK Long Tube Header Adapter Mid-Pipes part# 1816 or 18160 and an O2 Extension Harnesses and Hardware Kit part# 16332. Please see options listed above.

Application. These BBK 1-7/8" Ceramic Coated Long Tube Headers are specifically designed to fit the 2011-2017 GT and Boss 302 Mustangs equipped with the Coyote 4 valve 5.0L V8 engine. These Headers are intended for left hand drive applications only.

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only.

If I install the BBK 1-7/8 long tubes but I already have an H pipe do I need the the mid pipe adapter?

  • Depending on your year-model mustang and the h-pipe, you may need a mid-pipe adapter with these BBK 1-7/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers. The BBK 3 in. Long Tube Header Adapter Mid Pipe, item 389770/389771 is required for these long tube headers on GT S550's.

I have a 17 GT with an MBRP cat back now. Are these headers a direct bolt on?

  • The BBK 1-7/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers would bolt right up to your block, And the Mid-pipe you get would bolt up to your catback. I have posted a couple of links below for a guaranteed fit mid-pipe one off road and one catted.

Why do I need the BBK mid pipe adapter? Can't I use my stock cats? In other words, can the BBK long tube headers be purchased without the mid pipe adapter and be used with my stock cats that are already being used with my CORSA Extreme 3 in. exhaust?

  • The BBK 1-7/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers will require Mid pipe adapters in order to connect to the remainder of your exhaust due to the design of the headers. A mid pipe adapter is used as a compound bend is required to connect these two pieces.

I intend on super charging my car later down the road so I was thinking about running these instead of the 1 3/4 version. With the proper tune, will my car run right until I decide to use forced induction? Would my car run right with a super charger paired with the 1 3/4 header?

  • The BBK 1-7/8 in. Ceramic Long Tube Headers can be used on non boosted applications, however they will give up some low end power over 1 3/4" in setups like this.

Great Power Sound Gains! Worth Every Penny!

SUMMARY: I had the 1 7/8" headers, Catted X-Pipe shop installed and car Dyno tuned (Brenspeed in Tx did the work and the tune) and picked up 40 RWHP and 25 lb-ft RWT along with amazing sound through my Flowmaster Hush Power Axle-Back; and to my surprise, my fuel economy is 3MPG better. WORTH EVERY PENNY. Breakdowns below for you on different aspects to consider if you want to read them. INSTALL: FIRST - Find someone that has actually done a few installs on an 11-14 Mustang. They need to know what they are doing and you will get a legit quote. Expect to pay around $750 for someone that knows what they are doing. Any quote above or below that means they aren't experienced at it. I had Brenspeed in TX do the install and a Dyno Tune for me (I do have life time BAMA tunes which have been good for me, but wanted to get the most I could without doing data logging sessions). They did it all in one day no problem. A professional shop that has done this many times with all the right tools and a lift took 7 hrs. to install. Take that into consideration before you tackle the job yourself. FIT and FINISH: Installer said they went on with no problem. However, BBK is the only manufacturer that uses a different bolt pattern (i.e., some new and some OEM used to install) that requires a lot of attention to get right. Additionally, for those with lowered mustangs, the collectors on my car (1" drop front, 1.75" drop rear) are no only 5" off the ground. For those that went lower, you may want to consider the higher priced Kooks that fit the same as the factory headers with regards to ground clearance. FINISH on these headers is awesome, they look amazing under the hood and don't discolor because of the Ceramic coating. SIZE: 17/8" vs. 1 3/4" LTH's. Moving more air in or exhaust out means bigger is always better. AM advises that the 1 7/8" are for forced induction cars which is true that they are better for that. However, you a) will have to spend money to put these on later if you elect to force induce the car and b) with the right tune, the 1 7/8 work no problem for NA cars and you will get more power and better sound. SOUND: I have a Flowmaster Hushpower axle-back. The sound is terrifying at WOT to anyone that is not a muscle car junkie; those that are will be so excited to hear it that they will need to change their underwear (I have to do laundry more often now)! Idle is deep and powerful. No drone at cruising speed. Any touch of the throttle to accelerate normally (which is hard to do) yields a deep Nascar like sound that draws a lot of ready for it. POWER GAIN: Real and immediate! A totally different car that I have to learn how to drive again. Great gains all the way through the power band. Low End requires additional throttle feathering to stop from spinning my 10" wide wheels. Mid-Top End requires attention. With each HWY entrance, I roll past 100MPH so quickly now and my car wasn't slow to begin with. You really have to pay attention or pay the tickets. MUST DO: If you buy the Catted X-Pipe like I did, you will need to get some DYNOMAT Insulation and Heat shielding. The CATS no longer line up with the factory heat shields, they end up in between so you can and will feel the heat in the car without it. This is not expensive and I highly recommend it. You just stick it to the bottom of the car. Consider yourself warned.

    Absolutely awesome!!

For the first time ever doing long tube headers install everything was pretty straight forward. I did the install my self in my garage with some good old jack stands. Dropped the k member, motor mounts and stock shortys. That's the route I found easiest with some home depot tools hahahaha. I did it over the span of a week just because it was easy and I wasn't in a hurry. But once the headers came in it all went back in like butter! I had to remove the battery to get to the rear passenger bolts just for ease. Steering shaft had to be taken loose as well. They slide right in with the right amount of room. Once installed they look freaking awesome! And sound amazing! Definitely recommend especially if you are going for some more power!

    Took longer than expected

I ordered these long tubes with the BBK off-road X-pipe and they arrived promptly and in good condition. I installed them in my garage with jacks stands and a friend over the weekend. Probably 12 hours of work and neither of us had done this before. The instructions BBK sent with the system contradicted the instructions on the website which led to a lot of confusion about which exhaust studs were removed. We followed the paper instructions sent and ended up using all 5 exhaust bolts included on one side of the motor. When we got to the other side and realized the other 5 bolts were a different threat pitch we ended up reusing all the exhaust studs. They fit just fine but when the headers were fitted on the studs become close enough to the pipes that a ratchet won't fit and I had to use and open and wrench and tighten all the nuts which took a long time. My car is now crazy loud and aggressive sounding.

    BBK longtubes

The headers were shipped quick and packaged nicely only problem is they send you two half sets of header bolts that if you don't pay attention like me then you'll strip a hole and throw your phone and it'll shatter and then att will send you a phone that's newer and better so all in all I'm happy and loud. And i don't give a friggin heck so I bang gears and listen to bald eagles yell.

Just what I was looking for

These headers are great looking and not nearly as difficult to install as what I've heard. The sound coming from my stainless works retro chambered exhaust is awesome with the addition of these headers and since they're ceramic coated, the heat under the hood is greatly reduced compared to others. I might even but a set of these for my 04gt . Great product, couldn't be happier.

This was one of my first mods to my car and one of my favorites. Really nice tone, thing screams at wot like a banshee on fire and when not on it too rough it rides with a deep rumble and beautiful melody. My only advice beware of going with "high flow cats ;)" will attract a lot of attention wanted and unwanted and drones a bit while at 60-70 mph highway speeds. Can be balanced really nicely with some reputable brand name axelbacks. Going that route will eliminate the drone and will give you a really good deep tone while still having the mayhem at full throttle.

BBK 1 7/8" Ceramic Long Tube Headers

This was a self Installation on a 2012 Boss 302 Mustang using floor jacks, jack stands, and regular tools. Advise you go to YouTube and watch videos for your particular install, there are plenty of videos out there. On difficulty scale of 1-5, I rate this at a 4, mainly because I had to install without a lift, working on the floor under the car, and the difficulty of access to and removal of some of the stock header nuts and motor mount bracket bolts. Would have been a much easier install with a lift. Provided installation instructions were very helpful, but again, recommend watching YouTube installation videos prior to installation. All necessary installation parts and hardware were included and the headers fit perfectly. Opted to reuse the factory installed stock exhaust manifold studs and nuts which made the installation easier. Otherwise, you will have to remove all of the factory studs to use the provided header bolts. It was necessary to lift up the engine a couple of inches to get the motor mounts back in after bolting on the headers, but overall the installation went smoothly. Just follow the instructions, be patient, and the installation will go well.
