Review & Install Video

Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my review of the Borla Touring 2.5 inch Cat-back Exhaust for 2015 and up fastback GTs. This is one of a handful of Borla offerings for your S550 GT and it's going to be one of the more tame options with the Borla Stinger S pipe being louder and the Borla Atak definitely being the loudest of the bunch. While this is one of the more mild options that's on the market for the 2015 and up, what I really like about this catback is the deepness of the tone. This catback doesn't get raspy in the high RPMs like some of the other options tend to and that's a really good thing in my opinion, but it really all depends on what you're looking for. This system gives more of that classic muscle car sound and it will no doubt turn heads. So on a scale of one to five, with five being the absolute loudest, I would give the Touring AxleBack a solid two, maybe even a three in terms of overall loudness, especially since this catback does feature a resonator in the mid-pipe. Now this is not the factory resonator, so it does open up some sound and power, but it's still a resonator. It's definitely not the loudest system out there, but it's one of the best sounding in my opinion. It has a really nice pitch to it, making it sound more aggressive and powerful to me. Again, if you're going for straight up volume, then American Muscle does have other options on the site for you, such as the Borla Attack. Going even further with a touring catback, you will notice that the system features 2.5 inch manual bent stainless steel tubing which is perfect for daily drivers and lightly modified street cars. You don't really have to concern yourself with jumping up to a three inch exhaust until you start pushing a lot of boost or big power. Borla is a premium product and it's also a brand that is legendary for its quality. So if you have shopped for Borla before, you know that you're going to be looking at paying top dollar for a top quality product. But just as a side note, Borla doesn't even come in at the highest price point out there. When we start to think about the install, luckily the new S550s have a little thing called an independent rear suspension which just so happens to make catback installs a pretty easy task, making this a solid one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. You should have no issues bolting this thing up and hitting the road, making noise within an hour or two tops. Just as a friendly reminder, this system will only fit the fastback GTs and not the convertibles. I really like the Borla Touring Catback. It has a warmer, but very healthy sound and while it has a higher price point, it's totally worth it, especially when you remember that you're getting the build and quality that comes along with a name like Borla. Be sure to check out a system for your S550 right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Deep, Mellow Growl. Give your coyote powered 2015-2017 GT Fastback Mustang a more subtle sound while still adding power with a Borla Touring Cat-Back Exhaust System. This Borla exhaust not only adds a deep mellow muscle car sound to your GT Mustang, but also improves exhaust flow with the included Mid Pipe resonator for an increase in rear wheel horsepower and torque.

High Quality Construction. Borla manufactures their Cat-Back Exhaust systems from mandrel-bent 2.5" diameter, aircraft grade, T-304 stainless steel tubing for excellent exhaust flow and enduring corrosion resistance. The system includes a Mid Pipe resonator and two high flow, straight-through Touring mufflers that are packed with ultra-durable, continuous-strand sound-absorbing composite filament. The mufflers feature a pair of chromed 4" tips that are embossed with the Borla logo for impressive muscle car looks and sound.

Direct Bolt-on Upgrade. Borla's Touring Cat-Back Exhaust with included Mid Pipe bolts straight up in the stock location with no cutting or extra modifications required. Installation of this Borla Cat-Back can be completed in about two hours with just basic hand tools.

Application. This Borla Touring Cat-Back Exhaust System with Chromed Tips is designed to fit both Fastback and Convertible 2015 to 2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the DOHC 5.0L V8 coyote engine.

  • Yes, the Borla Touring cat back exhaust will work with the ford performance cut and clamp xpipe with the use of a step down adapter as the for performance xpipe is 2.75" in diameter.

In the video, it says it only fits GT Fastbacks not Convertibles but in the product description, it says it fits both. Was there an initial design iteration that only fit the Fastback or was it a mistake when doing the video ? I am asking this because I came across a used system and I am concerned it might not fit my convertible. Thanks !

I already have borla touring mufflers so wonder if I can buy this product without mufflers and how much.

terry

  • Unfortunately Borla does not offer this cat back exhaust without the mufflers.

    Great exhaust

Fitment was perfect. First thing i noticed is how much lighter it was than the stock system. Took around 45 mins. I got this system because i wanted a smooth exhaust with zero rasp, drone, or vibration, but loud enough to make my ears happy. When he backed it off the lift, i thought the exhaust sounded pretty loud for my standards from the outside. Really sounds like a mustang should, but when driving, it is really quiet inside the cabin. It doesnt do much cruising, but at 2k and above you get a really deep tone. Cruising in 6th i dont hear it at all with the windows down. Above 2k on the gas it roars pretty deep. WOT it screams, but only out the back of the car. You would turn heads if you wanted, and i like that choice vs being noticed regardless. I really like the sound with the resonated midpipe. The wife followed me home and could hear my car over her music, it does deliver a sweet mustang sound without being obnoxious. And i still have the option of swapping to the borla xpipe if i want it louder, making it the equivalent of the borla stype, as they share the same mufflers. But imo, this will do just fine. FYI, I was between this and the FR by borla, think i made the right choice. I give the loudness a 3, coming from the prospective of the stock exhaust. I would say it's a good 3 times louder than stock under normal driving, and not comparable at WOT. I just love the idea of driving vibration, drone, and rasp free. If that is your goal, i would suggest this system. However, it wont win you a rev contest.

    Just right!

I researched axle-back and cat-back exhausts and landed on the Borla Touring cat-back. The exhaust note is exotic with just a hint of rasp at lower rpms, but not over the top loud. There is no drone at highway speeds. Cost around $265 to install at the Ford store. I really love this setup, and so does my wife, who thinks it's sexy!

Just what I was looking for

Not too much louder than stock but has a nice deep tone. And best of all , no more raspy sound when I put the hammer down. Nice big tips fit the bumper cutouts perfectly.

Awesome sound, Perfect for a Daily Driver

Easy install, Low Rumble Idle, subtle tone change without obnoxiously loud volume. Neighborhood friendly. Slightly louder than stock at highway speeds but not overbearing.

Borla Touring - What Stock Should Sound Like

I wanted an exhaust to be more aggressive than the (very tame) stock setup but wasn't looking to wake the neighbors or go deaf on long trips, so I decided on the Borla Touring cat backs. I'm very pleased with the sound; it is very rich and deep, and has a nice growl from inside the cabin. This is what the stock exhaust should have sounded like, in my opinion. If i could have compared them side by side (not on tiny laptop speakers) I may have purchased the S type instead to get a slightly louder sound, but I didn't want them quite as raspy as those sounded on the videos. I called and spoke with a very helpful AM representative on the phone, who was able to give me more information about this and various other cat-backs. It's definitely worth a phone call if you have any questions! I had the dealer install this, which was only $60! Great product!

Touring Class Sound and First Class Look

I researched many Catback and Axleback Exhaust Systems before deciding on Borla Touring for my 2015 Mustang GT. The system was installed today in about one hour with the fit and finish being exceptional. As for the sound, it is just what I was looking for; deep tone with a resonant growl that will get attention without being overly loud or raspy.

    Great Product!

It took me forever to decide on a catback exhaust. I did not want anything ridiculously loud (I like my neighbors), but wanted a deep muscle car sound. I finally decided on the Borla Touring, because it comes with a resonator I could replace with an xpipe if I wanted it louder. Harder to go the other way, from loud to quiet. This was perfect for me and the deep growl at idle and at higher RPMs is head turning (without middle finger flipping). Extremely happy. It may be wishful thinking, but it feels like I have more power and torque now.

    Borla Perfect!

I probably listened to 15 different cat-back and axle-back Muffler sound clips on American Muscle. I knew that I wanted a low rumble at idle (like a burble), a bark when I hit the gas and absolutely NO drone on the highway, as I do cruise the highways often. The Borla Touring Cat-Back Exhaust fit the bill across my requirements. I was not disappointed. The Ford Performance-Borla Touring Cat-Back in my last Mustang GT was just a bit too loud for me at highways speeds. Though there was no drone in them either. If you are looking for a cat-back system that is quality throughout, an easy install and you love listening to the exhaust tunes with your windows down, this is the system for you!

    Borla Touring 2.5 Catback Exhaust.

Very pleased that I can no hear the rumble of the downshifts and definitely hear the engine more. I got the airaid dry filter cold air intake too and the car sounds awesome. I like the sound and appreciate how much it gets quiet while cruising at highway speeds. No droning and easy to talk in the cabin. I did not install it myself, so can't comment on the degree of difficulty. It took the tech about an hour to install the exhaust and an hour to install the cold air intake. Great combo if you want to hear the engine more than stock. More articulate sound both front and rear. If you just want a slight bump in rumble and roar, but quiet during cruise, this is the exhaust for you. The stock exhaust looked pitiful compared to the polished Borla stainless.

    European V8 sound

I'm really impressed with the Borla Touring catback it has a really cool sound when accelerating and its tone while driving is a smooth purr but when you hit it, it sounds mean and it is what a Mustang should sound like. Its the best purchase I have made and I like it! Thank You American Muscle for a timely delivery, I will refer everyone who asks me to your website.

Perfect exhaust system for my GT

The OEM takeoff was already developing some rust and had noticeable sections of restriction due to reduced pipe diameter. It sounded OK but lacked healthy rumble that I knew the Coyote should sound like. After installing the Borla 140589, my mechanic and I were impressed by the deeper tone and lack of raspiness. I'm sure that the 300 series SS pipe used will resist corrosion too.

    The Perfect Exhaust

I chose this exhaust because I wanted to keep a resonator on the car. I'm not a fan of rasp and I found that even when replacing the factory resonator with an H pipe, there was still more rasp than I liked. This exhaust is perfect for someone who wants a nicer tone and more volume than the factory exhaust without the rasp. Fitment was perfect, only took maybe an hour to get everything swapped out and then maybe a half hour being super fussy with the tip placement in the bumper.
