    Review & Install Video

Hey, everybody. I'm Justin with americanmuscle.com. Welcome to my quick breakdown and Dyno test of the K&N Series 69 Typhoon cold air intake system available for your '11 to '14 V6 powered Mustang. In the land of aftermarket intakes for your 3.7, there are going to be many different choices. What's going to be the deciding factor for you and your ride? Let's start with the name. Obviously, K&N knows a thing or two about making an intake and an air filter having pretty much written the book on modern day filtration. Because of this, they are going to continue to be one of the most popular choices for aftermarket air filters and intakes in the automotive world and beyond. On the surface you can tell that the Series 69 from K&N is definitely going to be one of the flashier options for your V6 that you will find here at AM, and that's thanks largely in part to this bright chrome aluminum intake tube. Of course, most of us would like to say that we install these aftermarket intakes for the performance and the sound benefits, but the improvement in under hood appearance should definitely not go overlooked. Adding to the appearance, you will notice this really cool carbon fiber intake cover or heat shield, one of my personal favorite parts about this intake. It just adds to the overall appearance of the Typhoon intake itself. In addition to that heat shield cover here, the air box itself and the aluminum intake tube, you will notice all the hardware and couplers needed to complete the package. Like most of the aftermarket intakes available for your 3.7 powered Mustang, you will notice that an aftermarket or custom tune is not required when running this K&N. With that being said, though, it's never a bad idea as it's only going to increase your performance and improve your driveability overall. Before we can find out just what kind of gains are possible using the Typhoon intake here from K&N along with that tune, we've got to get this thing installed. The process really couldn't be any easier even for my first-time wrenchers out there and should only take you roughly an hour from start to finish using some basic hand tools. As always guys, I'd like to encourage you to give us a call here at AM and talk to a Mustang expert if you have any more questions about the Typhoon intake itself or any other product you'll find here at AM. All right guys, we already grabbed our baseline run using our 6-speed 2014 V6 behind me earlier. Now with the intake installed, we're going to move the car over to the Dyno jet one more time and see what kind of power we're looking at. Our baseline run using our manual 2014 V6 gave us 245 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the K&N, the car's now making 254 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels, giving us a peak gain of 9 horsepower over those baseline numbers and gains of as much as 18 horsepower and 26 pound-feet of torque throughout the curve. If you're in the market for a premium aftermarket cold air intake for your V6 powered S197 from one of the most trusted names in aftermarket filtration, then be sure to check out the Series 69 Typhoon cold air intake, available here at americanmuscle.com.

Improves Horsepower And Torque. The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake completely replaces your 3.7L V6 Mustangs restrictive stock air box and paper filter element with a high flow K&N filter assembly and a free-flowing aluminum intake tube for a noticeable increase in horsepower and acceleration all while still providing excellent filtration. Power gains of 18 horsepower and 26 ft/lb torque have been seen at the rear wheels.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Cold Air Intakes on the market for the 3.7L V6 Mustangs this K&N Series 69 CAI does not require a computer re-tune. The engineers at K&N really did their homework to improve your pony's power using the stock tune.

Filters out harmful contaminants. The supplied K&N Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with it's unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Washable, Reusable Filter. K&N designed their high flow air filters to be reusable. That means there is no need to buy a new filter every few thousand miles, you can just clean the filter, re-oil it, and save money with a K&N Filter Recharge Kit.

CARB Certified. Best of all this K&N Mustang Cold Air Intake is 50-state smog legal under Carb EO# D-269-48.

Straight Forward Installation. The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake Kit is designed to install easily with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for proper installation. All necessary parts and instructions are included.

Application. This K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake kit is specially designed to fit the 2011-2014 Mustang's equipped with the 3.7L V6 engine. No computer retuning required.

I've had this mod for a few months now and I was wondering if I need to keep the carbon fiber cover on? Or can I have it off? Will that allow more air to be sucked in?

    • Hello! The carbon fiber cover on the K&N Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake helps direct air flow to the filter, and prevents any dirt from the engine bay entering the intake. While you may be able to run the intake without it, you would not see any noticeable increase in airflow.

Will this fit with both a BBK throttle body and an air raid throttle body spacer?

    • Yes this will fit no problems on the bbk throttle body. i actually installed the throttle body after I already installed this cai. The spacer i cant answer that as i do not have one installed.

While a tune is not required, would a computer re-tune have any significant impact on performance?

    • A tune can affect the car in quite a few ways. Most tuners have a 87 octane performance tune, and a 91 octane performance tune. Both of which explain themselves, one's meant for 91 octane, the other is meant for 87 octane. Tuner's modify how a car's computer thinks, this means the tune can do a number of things which can also relate to fuel:air ratios. This leads to a somewhat noticeable power gain, while also increasing engine reliability as these tunes are meant for Mustangs, and for their trim. In short summary a tuner can indeed provide an impact on performance? Significant probably not. You won't see a thirty horsepower increase. But a tuner can aid fuel economy, and possibly milk out more horsepower from your air intake. At best another 5-10 horsepower in most cases.

So regardless of what air intake of my choice, it comes with an air flow sensor?

    • The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake and all other Cold Air Intakes we currently offer will reuse the OEM Mass Airflow Sensor.

I have a question here. I already install this intake. But I feel something is not normal. I can hear sound like sucking air at 1000 to 2000 rpm, the sound is not noisy, but It's always there. Is this what it should be? BTW, I just can hear that when I drive, if I park and push gas, the sound will not appear. 1 answer

Great product. The instructions were a little difficult to follow, but if you know your car and know your tools, you’ll be fine. Sounds good and looks great. Definitely able to notice the gains. Good job KandN.

      came with dents

the product came dented, everytime 2500rpm it makes a stranger noise (not throttling it) for a split second. I'd go for a intake that needs a tuner tbh, the intake was pretty basic to put together and install didnt want to return just because its a hassle and then have to wait for a new one to be shipped

Installation was swift and it looks good but the lid doesn't fit well at all. I had to take a small round file to make the holes line up and there really isn't much of a seal to it. An open top that seals to the hood might have been a better idea.

Easy install little gain in power gives your car more of a growl and looks good under the hood. I drive 110 miles a day to work and have noticed I get better mpg with it on.

      Awesome CAI

I’m not a gear head in any sense of the word and I was able to get this in. The first time it took me about 90min but the second time I installed one on my wife’s car and it took maybe an hour. Noticible difference without a tune! I can wait to get a tune to see the full potential.

      Measurements off

It’s very good saves gas but it was to big I think the measurements were done wrong the carbon fiber top didn’t allow the hood to close! Other than that is good not so much power increase.

      Disappointed

Just prior to installation my son and I used the track app on his '14 v6 Mustang to time 0-60 3 times each way and averaged All within 1 tenth one way and 2 tenths the other. After installation did the same on exactly the same stretch and LOST a tenth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Called American Muscle and was told to check all vacuum connections. Did that and no change occured. I will call KandN as recommended by American Muscle. Looks good, but I was going for performance and didn't get it. Out about $400! I overall rated 1 star because installation went fine except requiring a little effort to bend some to get the chrome pipe to fit, but there is no way to give negative stars on performance.

      Moving The Needle

I am not entirely sure about the performance gain, but for some reason, my mpg improved by .2 of gallon after installation. My Mustang sounds brilliant and combined with intake extender, felt "peppier" than the stock device. I put this on to improve mileage as I use my Mustang for occasional long distance trips (1K miles) and I will know more in a week, but I do notice that when I "punch" it, the engine does not take that "deep breath" before engaging. Definitely put some hop this little V6.

      She can breath better

Found out my factory intake was all cracked so getting this CAI was a good decision. Now my car doesn't hesitate between 40-80 mph during a pull like it used to. My friend said ill really feel a difference though when i get a tune next. Really a good investment. your factory intake needs to be replace with this beautiful CAI asap. nothing better than popping the trunk and see that shiny chrome pipe and carbon fiber as well. The instructions were not that detailed in some areas so it took a little longer than an hour but wasn't too hard.

      Worth it

I've been waiting far too long to order and install this intake. It isn't technically difficult at all, just a squeeze to make a couple things line up proper. Once installed, wow is the sound improved!! Its hard not to stomp the gas pedal with how this livened up the exhaust. Idle and cruise is no louder, but its tough not to accelerate quickly. On my first road trip with it, I drove conservatively and it seemed as if my mileage was slightly better. The jury is still out on power, I don't think it is a significant gain there. Will it ever pay for its self in mpg gains? Likely not, but glad I did it anyway.
