Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, everybody. I'm Justin with americanmuscle.com. Welcome to my quick breakdown and Dyno test of the K&N Series 69 Typhoon cold air intake system available for your '11 to '14 V6 powered Mustang. In the land of aftermarket intakes for your 3.7, there are going to be many different choices. What's going to be the deciding factor for you and your ride? Let's start with the name. Obviously, K&N knows a thing or two about making an intake and an air filter having pretty much written the book on modern day filtration. Because of this, they are going to continue to be one of the most popular choices for aftermarket air filters and intakes in the automotive world and beyond. On the surface you can tell that the Series 69 from K&N is definitely going to be one of the flashier options for your V6 that you will find here at AM, and that's thanks largely in part to this bright chrome aluminum intake tube. Of course, most of us would like to say that we install these aftermarket intakes for the performance and the sound benefits, but the improvement in under hood appearance should definitely not go overlooked. Adding to the appearance, you will notice this really cool carbon fiber intake cover or heat shield, one of my personal favorite parts about this intake. It just adds to the overall appearance of the Typhoon intake itself. In addition to that heat shield cover here, the air box itself and the aluminum intake tube, you will notice all the hardware and couplers needed to complete the package. Like most of the aftermarket intakes available for your 3.7 powered Mustang, you will notice that an aftermarket or custom tune is not required when running this K&N. With that being said, though, it's never a bad idea as it's only going to increase your performance and improve your driveability overall. Before we can find out just what kind of gains are possible using the Typhoon intake here from K&N along with that tune, we've got to get this thing installed. The process really couldn't be any easier even for my first-time wrenchers out there and should only take you roughly an hour from start to finish using some basic hand tools. As always guys, I'd like to encourage you to give us a call here at AM and talk to a Mustang expert if you have any more questions about the Typhoon intake itself or any other product you'll find here at AM. All right guys, we already grabbed our baseline run using our 6-speed 2014 V6 behind me earlier. Now with the intake installed, we're going to move the car over to the Dyno jet one more time and see what kind of power we're looking at. Our baseline run using our manual 2014 V6 gave us 245 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the K&N, the car's now making 254 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels, giving us a peak gain of 9 horsepower over those baseline numbers and gains of as much as 18 horsepower and 26 pound-feet of torque throughout the curve. If you're in the market for a premium aftermarket cold air intake for your V6 powered S197 from one of the most trusted names in aftermarket filtration, then be sure to check out the Series 69 Typhoon cold air intake, available here at americanmuscle.com.

Improves Horsepower And Torque. The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake completely replaces your 3.7L V6 Mustangs restrictive stock air box and paper filter element with a high flow K&N filter assembly and a free-flowing aluminum intake tube for a noticeable increase in horsepower and acceleration all while still providing excellent filtration. Power gains of 18 horsepower and 26 ft/lb torque have been seen at the rear wheels.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Cold Air Intakes on the market for the 3.7L V6 Mustangs this K&N Series 69 CAI does not require a computer re-tune. The engineers at K&N really did their homework to improve your pony's power using the stock tune.

Filters out harmful contaminants. The supplied K&N Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with it's unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Washable, Reusable Filter. K&N designed their high flow air filters to be reusable. That means there is no need to buy a new filter every few thousand miles, you can just clean the filter, re-oil it, and save money with a K&N Filter Recharge Kit.

CARB Certified. Best of all this K&N Mustang Cold Air Intake is 50-state smog legal under Carb EO# D-269-48.

Straight Forward Installation. The K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake Kit is designed to install easily with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for proper installation. All necessary parts and instructions are included.

Application. This K&N Series 69 Typhoon Cold Air Intake kit is specially designed to fit the 2011-2014 Mustang's equipped with the 3.7L V6 engine. No computer retuning required.

I've had this mod for a few months now and I was wondering if I need to keep the carbon fiber cover on? Or can I have it off? Will that allow more air to be sucked in?

Bsanch

  • Hello! The carbon fiber cover on the K&N Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake helps direct air flow to the filter, and prevents any dirt from the engine bay entering the intake. While you may be able to run the intake without it, you would not see any noticeable increase in airflow.

I have the K@n xdfidex 69 Typhoon Air Intake. I love the looks, have not driven with it on as car is off the street for winter. Will update you when I can try it. I am thinking of installing the BBKI 73 MM Throttle Body. Will this fit into the Typhoon coupler with out trouble or will I need a larger adapter? Thank you Oldognutrik

oldognutrik

  • This K&N Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake will fit with the BBK 73mm Throttle Body, item 56146, however, since the throttle body is larger, you may need to warm up the coupler to stretch it over the throttle body due to the tight fitment. http://www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-85mm-throttlebody-112v6.html

    Great Mod!!!!!

First off when accelerating you definitely notice a powerful increase and with my rouse axle back exhaust just makes the sound more aggressive and when around 3 to 5rpm you hear the intake flowing in tons of air! I would definitely recommend this intake to any v6 owner. Next up a custom tuner to bring out the intake's full potential and a aluminum driveshift to eliminate the terrible 115 speed limiter......all in all thanks AM definitely plan on shopping here again plus the delivery was quick!!!

    Looks and Sounds Great

Install was a breeze, noticeable sound change even with factory mufflers. Exhaust note deeper especially when accelerating 3500-4500. Love the look of the KandN the chrome tube and carbon fiber cover really adds to the engine bay. There are cheaper intakes but I have always been loyal to KandN due to their reputation.

    Product defects

The KandN Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake arrived with a small scratch on the chrome tube that was not noticed until after installation. The filter cover did not fit well and I had to use a rat tail file to enlarge a couple of screw holes to make it fit. The serial number stick on tag would not stick on (to anything) - it appeared to have been in stock too long. Otherwise, the entire product looks good in the engine room.

    Fit was not perfect

Product was great, the fit where the vacuum hose did not fit under the indentation of the cover of the manifold. Throttle body spacer helped.

    Wow.

Wow, ok so for starters this was my first time installing an aftermarket mod to my V6 and well i have to admit it did take a minute or two to figure out half way into installing but other than that it was easy peasy ( not a patient person ) and when revving up oh my goodness can you hear the difference and it is pretty awesome. I would definitely reccomend this product if you were looking to get a Cold Air Intake. Thanks AM.

    I love it!

Right off the bat could feel the additional hp when jumping on the freeway. It actually gave the car a different more aggressive tone as well when accelerating which I didn't expect but absolutely love. My only issue with the kit was the hole placement for the carbon fiber cover didn't exactly line up so I couldn't install one of the bolts so I got 5/6 so it is secure but i would have liked to have them all installed. Other than that great product about to look into getting a a cat back exhaust and throttle body as well.

    Best intake Ever!!!

The 69 typhoon is the best intake ever! I installed it myself following the instructions in the box and it was pretty simple to get it done. It took me about an hour or so from start to finish. Haven't taken my car to the dyno but it does feel like it's gained a few extra horse power. The car feels faster than it was before, much louder for sure since I've also changed the exhaust, and there is plenty more air being sucked it by the typhoon intake into the engine, and the best part is that you can actually hear it do it when you step on the accelerator! I just love this new intake!

    Great first mod

This was my first mod i have ever done to my 2013 v6 mustang. It was a fairly easy install and it took me around an hour to get the intake in. The intake gave my car a noticable power increase and a nice new tone to the stock exhaust. I would definitely recommend this CAI to a friend.

    Good Performance Upgrade

The Typhoon was fairly easy to install with just basic hand tools as advertised. The only problem I encountered was when trying to mount the air box adapter one of the holes in the air box was off just a little. It was easily remedied with a small round file. That made the install a little over an hour. I'm very satisfied with the kit overall and especially the performance increase. The company was a breeze to work with. I'm very pleased with the service.

    Great Investment!

This is my first mustang I've ever owned, I loved it without the intake but it's even more fun with the intake, has a mean growl even with the optional lid attached, I can notice a power gain when really punching it, overall it was definitely worth the money, I highly recommend for anyone looking for a horsepower gain and making your mustang a little louder, sounds amazing when you punch that accelerator a lot of fun!

    Great Part

Easy to install, noticeably increases engine sound, and also looks nice. Great intake overall. The only negative thing I'd have to say is the carbon fiber cover screws were too tight so they wouldn't go in, I bought new cross screws for it.
