Review & Installation Video

Hey Justin from here, taking a closer look at these very budget friendly intakes from SR Performance, available in black or polished fitting all 96-04 Mustang GTs. This kit completely replaces the power robbing factory airbox in your GT with everything you see here, including a reusable high flow intake filter, heat shield, lightweight aluminum 2 piece intake shield in that polished black finish, and all the couplers and hardware needed for the install. If you didn't know, cooler, denser air results in more horsepower, so with that in mind, this intake puts the filter right in the fender well, allowing for maximum cool air, especially when paired with that heat shield, that should prevent any hot engine bay air from entering the intake. Ok so we all want to know just how much power this intake is going to make, but in order to do so we do need to grab a quick baseline run from our automatic 2000 GT behind me, and then get to work installing this SR Performance intake. Removing the stock airbox and installing the new SR Performance intake is a pretty straightforward task that should only take you about an hour using basic hand tools. Keep in mind you will need to transfer the mass air housing and sensor to the new intake, because the SR Performance intake does not come with either. Even though the SR Performance intake does not require a tune, we are going to upload one of our custom 93 octane Bama tunes, in hopes of seeing some sizeable gains with this setup. This tune is going to optimize our spark timing, perfect our air/fuel ratios, and as a result we should be looking at some drastically improved throttle response. And for our automatic here we're looking for increased shift firmness, in addition to adjustable shift points. Alright, with our intake bolted up and our tune loaded, we're going to fire up our GT one more time and see how we do. So our baseline run with our automatic 2000 GT gave us 222 horsepower, and 260 ft/lbs of torque. With our cold air intake and bama combination, we put down 249 horsepower and 295 ft/lbs of torque, making for a peak gain of 27 horsepower over our baseline numbers, and gains of 35 horsepower and 54 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. Not only do we pick up more horsepower and torque using this setup, but we also improved our under the hood appearance as well, so even though this intake doesn't have a big brand name attached to it, it certainly held up its end of the bargain, and delivered some nice gains for a price that's very hard to beat. So be sure to check out an SR Performance cold air intake for your 4.6 right here at

More Horsepower And Torque. Replace that restrictive stock intake, throttle body and upper intake plenum with a SR Performance Combo Kit from AmericanMuscle for more horsepower and torque. This combo kit will greatly improve your engines incoming airflow path to produce more useable power and to increase throttle response.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Throttle Body, Cold Air Intake and Upper Plenum Combo Kits on the market today for the Ford Mustang this SR Performance Combo Kit does not require a computer re-tune. The engineers at SR Performance really did their homework to improve your Pony's power using the stock tune.

70MM Bore. Your 4.6L's stock throttle body is a restrictive 56mm, choking off airflow and keeping your Mustang from giving you everything it has. But this SR Performance throttle body and matching  Upper Intake Plenum features a generous, free flowing 70mm single bore design for significantly more air to feed the fire under your hood.

Reusable Filter. SR Performance designed their Cold Air Intakes with a reusable high flow cotton air filter. So no there is no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles. Just clean the filter, re-oil it, save money, and go!

Easy Bolt-On Installation. This SR Performance Intake Combo Kit is designed to be a straight forward install with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for a simple 2 hour installation.

Application. This SR Performance 70mm Throttle Body with Cold Air Intake and Upper Intake Plenum is specifically designed to fit the 1996 to 2004 GT Mustangs equipped with the 4.6L V8 modular motor.

Application Note. 70mm throttle bodies work great on stock or mildly modified 4.6L Mustangs, if you already have or are planning on more aggressive modifications, you may want to consider a SR Performance 75mm throttle body kit.

what type of power gains (without bamma tuner) I have a 98 gt 5 speed . Ok you guys installed these parts but that was with a bamma tune and it clearly says you do not need a custom tune forvthem, I understand it was for best results but without the tuner involved how much power could we expect just simply bolting on those 3 parts . I.e have exhaust but that's it .. thanks in advance

  • Less than but maybe 20

which throttle body which throttle body would be better? the SR Performance 70mm or 75mm throttle body?

  • If you plan on going forced induction then go 75mm but if not go 70mm. Too much air can cause power loss.

What can I expect with this mod alone. I am debating on whether to buy this or not. How much HP and ft/lbs would I expect but just using this mod alone. My engine is bone stock so when this mod alone ( no tune , CAI , or intake plenum ) what gains will I see performane wise ?

  • Better throttle response, and <10 hp at wide open throttle. If you were to get a tune for it you would see more gains from it for sure. If you planned on doing more mods the SCT tuner would really be beneficial. I would do all your modding and then get the tune to include all the mods. So buying the CAI - SCT Tuner package last would be my suggestion. You can tell Bama tuning all the mods you have done and they will write you a tune that will get the most out of all of them. It's not cheap to mod a Mustang, just take it one step at a time, and have fun!

Review from SR Performance Black Cold Air Intake (96-04 GT)

    I can feel the difference

Shipped in two days. Went in easily enough. Only two issues were that I had to use one of my own hoses to make it fit, and it came a little different than displayed. In the display it has it coming out of the throttle body and curving in to the panel so that the filter sits horizontally. However, the one I received had an extra 90 degree welded on, so rather than sitting horizontally, my filter is sitting vertically in my fender. Had to use a pneumatic drill on the clamp to make sure it stayed. Other than that it works great. Can feel the difference in horsepower and throttle response, especially in the higher rpms.

Review from SR Performance Black Cold Air Intake (96-04 GT)

    Stack Racing CAI

I went with this CAI because i liked the idea of taking the air from outside the engine compartment. I had a K&N CAI on my old Mustang and perfomance wise they are definitly the same. Install was a little trickier than i thought it would be but still only took 45min. Also the air filter is smaller than i thought it would be so i will probably try to find a larger one that will still fit into the wheel well. This is an excellent product none the less and would put it on any future mustang. P.S. from 6000-6500 RPM it absolutely WAILS like a banshee.

Review from SR Performance 70mm Throttle Body (96-04 GT)

    Ya Baby

I love that big intake sound at full throttle (if it didn't do anything else that would be worth it) and it opened up the top end (did the plenum install too). Easy install after watching video and reading American Muscle articles. Just drilled out the throttle cable slot before assembling anything. Put it all together on the bench first and it went on the car in thirty minutes without a hitch. Close attention to the position of the TPS and teflon around all vacuum fittings and the car idled perfectly. Hint, replacing the throttle cable, cruise control, and return spring is easier before bolting the mounting bracket back on top of the plenum. By all means do the plenum too it allows the airflow of over a 100 cfm more. I got all items on sale... so worth it.

    Pretty Good deal

Decent product. I don't see any major downside between this CAI and the other ones from BBk and the like. Paint does scratch easily so be careful when installing it. I had to reuse one of my old hose clamps so don't throw them away until the job is done.

Review from SR Performance Black Cold Air Intake (96-04 GT)

    Good deal

I chose this CAI because it has the filter in the fender, its not chrome, and the price was tough to beat. Delivery was typical for American Muscle; packaged so it didn't get damaged in shipping and fast--in other words, excellent. Installation was straight forward with the exception of some slight clearance problems with my strut tower brace. This caused a bit of adjusting and making a rubber pad to protect and quiet the spot where the intake tube and the brace contacted each other. The paint finish on the CAI looks good but is very poor quality. Even the hose clamps scratched the finish and the slightest contact with anything scratche the paint off. I'll be repainting mine with better paint or have it powder coated for looks and durability. All-in-all, I would say this is a good product.

The part is easy to replace.

The throttle body was quick and easy to fit. Two small issues, the hole for the throttle cable was to small, I had to drill it out. Having warned me the old sensor screws were difficult to remove and easy to damage, you could of given me knew ones. I had to replace them to finish the job.

For the money, this is a great kit. Added a little more pop off the line, and the fit was pretty good. I have the IAT sensor integrated with the MAF, so I had to plug off the extra hole in the intake with a rubber grommet from a local hardware store.

    Good for the money!

Fitment was great except for the rear vacuum nipple which required a larger hose. Rpms seem to hang slightly longer than stock, but only around 1100 rpms then down to normal. This aids in rev matching and overall in town driving with a manual! Worth your while! Thanks AM!

    Who needs Accufab?

I purchased this with the Edelbrock 70mm throttle body. Installation took about 30 minutes with very few tools. Fit and finish was excellent. Throttle and lower intake faces were flat and true and there are no leaks. The piece is solid and looks better than most I've seen on the market. If you've ever considered the Accufab plenum, but didn't have the cash, you need to consider this plenum for your pony.
