Jake: Jake here for AmericanMuscle, and today I'm taking a look at the C&L Super Sport Front Brake Rotor & Pad Kit, fitting various different models and trims of Challenger. Now, before we dive in too deep here, folks, I do want to take a moment to acknowledge that this has a complicated fitment for a bunch of different models and trims of Challengers, so please make sure you double-check it before you buy. We've got it all spelled out on the website for you. You've heard me say before, but brakes are some of the most important components on your vehicle, and if you're gonna go fast, you need to be able to stop quickly too. So if you're in need of a way to stop faster or just replace your stock front brakes, these are a great way to make an upgrade and an excellent way to improve your Challenger's braking performance without blowing out the budget.Traditionally, manufacturers will equip their cars with solid disks from the factory. And while those work fine in most applications, there's definitely room for improvement. One of the best ways to do that is by upgrading to a set of drilled and slotted rotors like these. These are going to be extremely helpful in dissipating heat. Now, heat is the enemy of braking performance as it is with most things, and that's where these channels and the holes on the faces of the rotors come in.Now, as you apply the brakes, friction and heat builds up on the pads and the faces of the rotors, and these channels funnel that heat away from the pads. These holes also allow for another potential escape route where the heat can dissipate and get funneled out of the rotors through these big central vents here. So, all those hot gases have plenty of places through which to escape, and less heat means less chance of fading and better overall braking response. Now, if you've ever had brakes get hot on you before, you know how scary of an experience that can be, let me tell you, it's not a fun one. So doing everything you can to avoid it is worth it. That's all to say that you're gonna get much better heat dissipation, which means that your breaking performance is gonna be greatly improved over stock with this setup. Those vents and holes are also gonna keep brake dust and other debris like water off of the faces of the rotors, making for smooth, consistent operation, no matter the conditions. Combine that with these Super Sport ceramic pads, you're gonna get maximum bite, quiet operation, and low dust. The rotors themselves are constructed from CNC-machined premium cast iron, so similar in construction to your standard OEM brakes. That means that they're gonna last quite some time. They are also perfectly mill-balanced to prevent against vibration, noise, and uneven wear. And with something that is heavy that's spinning real fast on the outside of your car like that, that's very important. As you can see, they're also finished in a bright zinc electroplating, and that's gonna help prevent against rust and corrosion for a long time come. But that cast iron construction means that the overall price stays low. More on that in a moment. And let's not forget about the pads, these are made using a proprietary ceramic compound that's designed to produce a consistent solid bite and also resist fade.Pricing for this set, as you see, it will come in at about $250, which does make it the least expensive full set of drilled and slotted front brakes for the challenger. So this kit is a great value, and you will also get excellent stopping power and more performance versus stock. These also pair nicely with the accompanying rear setup, which we do have available on our site as well.Installation is gonna come in at a two out of three on our difficulty meter, and it should take you about three hours to get the job done. Now, this is a direct bolt-on replacement for your stock pads and rotors, and this is certainly something that can be accomplished at home in the driveway or garage. You're not gonna need any kind of special tools, it's just gonna take you some time. You also get all new stainless hardware in the kit and some high temp brake lubricant, so you have everything you need to get this job done. And to show you that process now, let's head on over to the install bay.Man: Tools used for this install, a breaker bar, 18-millimeter ratchet, 13-millimeter and 21-millimeter sockets, a 1/2-inch drive ratchet, and a 3/8 drive ratchet. Hey, guys, I'm gonna show you how to install our brake and rotor kit here on our 2016 Challenger. So let's get started. First thing we're gonna do, now that we have our wheel off, we're gonna remove our caliper first. There's two 13-millimeter bolts here that hold it in place. You might also need an 18-millimeter wrench here to hold the inside nut here so that you can break this loose. So I'm gonna take my 13-millimeter on my 3/8 ratchet and my 18-millimeter wrench. I'm gonna get in here and take those two off.So, now we have those two bolts out, we're gonna just be able to lift, remove our caliper. I'm just gonna place it out of the way for now and get it out of the way. Next, what we'll do is just remove our brake pads. They're just gonna slide out like that. And then we're gonna remove these two 21-millimeters right here. We're gonna need a 21-millimeter socket and a breaker bar to get these two loose. So as you can see, I got a 21-millimeter on a breaker bar. We're gonna get in here, I'm gonna push down, and they're on there pretty good. And we're gonna tighten them up the same way when we put this thing back together. And we're gonna break the bottom loose. Now what you're gonna wanna do is to remove them. I'm gonna switch this over to a ratchet and a 21-millimeter to get 'em off. Now we'll remove our caliper bracket. Now we're getting ready to remove our rotor. If it doesn't come off because it's froze on, all you're gonna have to do is smack with the hammer here or here, and it'll come right off and come loose. This one's ready to come right off, just like that. Now you're gonna wanna repeat this whole uninstall procedure on the opposite side. Now we have our rotors off. We're gonna install our new rotor onto our hub here and just take it like that. Get it in place. Next, we'll install our caliper bracket. So now we're gonna install our caliper bracket. We're gonna just hold our rotor into place, get our caliper bracket on, take our two bolts that we took off previously, and get them started. The hard part here is just to hold your rotor flat, makes it easier to start it. And I'm gonna start the upper one here. I'm gonna run it in as far as I can by hand. That one down there, we're going to have to tighten up with the ratchet. Now we're gonna take our 21-millimeter again on our 1/2-inch drive ratchet and tighten these up. Now, you're gonna wanna torque these two bolts to manufacturer spec. Next, I'll show you about the clips here before we put our brake pads in place. So now, in the kit, they give us new spring clips that go down on the bottom and up on top here. And they're pretty simple to install. All you're gonna do is just lift up on the old one, pop it off, and remove it like that. Take the new one again, slide it down into place here just like that. And then you just wanna repeat that same procedure on the top one. So now what they give you in the kit is they give you some of this moly grease, which is what you're gonna do, is open this packet up and you're gonna smear it on the back of the brake pad like that where this shim plate is here, and you're just gonna smear it on both sides of that. We're not gonna do that because we're not gonna be keeping the brakes on the car, but you're just gonna smear this on. So now once you get your moly grease on the back of your pads, you'll be able to stick these in place and put them up against your rotor like that. Now we'll be able to reinstall our caliper. Now we're gonna take our caliper. Now, on our caliper, the pistons are all the way back. If you have to, you can use a old pad and some channel locks or C-clamp to push your pistons back to get 'em so that you can put on your new pads. Depending on how your old pads were worn, your pistons will be out a little further. Ours are all the way back. So we're going to just be able to take this, slide this over top of our pads like that and get it lined up. Just push on my rotor here a little bit, and we'll just get this to where it falls into place. And now we'll restart our 13-millimeter bolts right here, and this one. And I'm gonna take my 13-millimeter on my 3/8 ratchet. Run these in. You might need to take your 18-millimeter again, hold the backside of this to tighten it up. We'll do the same on the top one. And now that we have those tight, you're just gonna run a repeat this whole install procedure on the opposite side.Jake: That wraps up this review and install of our C&L Super Sport Brake and Rotor Pad Kit Front for '09 to '23 Challenger GT, RT, TA, and '11 to '23 Challenger SE, SXT with dual-piston front calipers.
