- Pypes Mid-Muffler Exhaust 2005-2010 Ford Mustang GT Installation Guide
Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I have with me the Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back exhaust system fitting all 2005-2010 Mustang GTs. The biggest benefit of going with a mid muffler setup is the elimination of any possible drone, which can be especially problematic on automatic cars. This is made possible thanks to the muffler location and the longer tailpipes. Taking a closer look at the Cat-Back itself you’ll notice right away it’s very similar to Pypes’ Pype Bomb Cat-Back exhaust – both systems use the M80 muffler, and both systems also use 2.5” mandrel bent stainless steel tubing throughout. Where the kits differ is the tips – where the Pype Bomb uses those massive 4” megaphone style resonated tips, this kit uses a more traditional style 4” tip. Because of all this you can still expect a very aggressive exhaust note out of the system. Installation of this new Cat-Back really shouldn’t be all that bad, removing the factory setup first and then getting this Pypes Cat-Back bolted on should take you about 2 hours from start to finish. Now let’s hear how the Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back exhaust sounds compared to our factory exhaust.

Technical Note. Americanmuscle recommends adding the 2005+ Mustang 304 Stainless Steel Exhaust Hanger Kit from the drop down option above, to provide more strength, stability and a cleaner installed appearance. If you have a 2007 Mustang you may need the kit for correct installation.

Do not buy
All I hear is rattle, rattle, rattle, because they don’t fit right, they just hammer my panhard bar. Sound great but not worth it.Helpful (0)

I love the exhaust note from this system. It, along with the Pypes after cat x pipe, and LTH, gives a higher pitched more mellow tone than the MBRP's that they replaced; not saying anything bad about the MBRP's. The two pipes that connected to the mid pipe had to be welded in place because they were not flared to slip on; this being the only thing that frustrated me about the install. It is a beautiful system, with an intoxication tone, especially on acceleration. I would do it again if I had another S197.Helpful (0)

Mid pipe M80 great exhaust note
The Pypes mid pipe cat back has a great finish and sound amazing paired with off road x pipe but the fit leaves a little to be desired as they could have made the pipes just a pinch longer so it would go together a little better I had to move some of the pipes around to get them all to fit properly if only 1 of any of the pipes would have been about 1/4 to 3/8 of a inch longer this would have fit perfectly with that being said I am extremley happy with the sound quality and loudness of this systemHelpful (5)

Wouldnt purchase again
Tail pipes fit poorly, not even at all, not even worth modifying, better off building a mid muffler system on your own. Sustem needs a rethink and a quality improvement.Helpful (5)

Packaged well, seems to be good quality, and looks good once installed. Installation was easy as all parts fit as they should. Lining it all up so it didn’t rub and so it was somewhat centered on bumper was a different story. Since it is in 4 pieces (3 with bends) slight twists in a pipe change the whole geometry downstream. 2 hrs to install initially, but had to walk away to sleep on it. Fresh eyes the next morning helped to adjust the pipes so they lined up OK. Pass side still isn’t perfect in bumper, but I’ll live. Sounds good! Just what I was looking for for the convertible with two car seats. :-)Helpful (8)

They sound good at the 3000 RPM plus range, would like a little more sound at an idle. Going down the highway there is no extra sound in the car if anything a little less sound. As for the install they look great once i readjusted them for an hour to get the tips in the same place. And the one thing it doesn't say, is you need to cut out the old exhaust if you are on jack stands in the drive way instead of a car lift.Helpful (7)
My 2006 Mustang GT has Magnaflow aftermarket exhaust. The car is bone stock except for the mufflers. It has a terrible drone around 1800-2000 rpms. I would like to get rid of this drone. I don't really care how loud the exhaust sounds..the V8 always sounds good. Are these Pypes Mid-flow mufflers they way to cure the drone?
The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust will have significant amounts of drone, especially on automatic Mustangs.
If someone wanted to remove the mid mufflers for a direct straight pipe exhaust where you replace the mid mufflers with a metal pipe, is that possible? I just wanted to double check
You certainly could do so! You receive the kit of course in pieces to then install all together. Simply just leave out the mid-muffler during your install, and make sure you have either done the measurements or find a good exhaust shop to fill the gap appropriately.
Will this work with stock headers for my 2010 mustang GT convertible or do I need to upgrade them?
This cat-back exhaust will bolt up directly to the factory h-pipe without any issues.
I have Varex X-force Mufflers (Axle Back) for my 2008 Mustang GT and was wondering if the Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust would be compatible with this axle back or any other Axle Backs from any other brands of Axle Backs
As long as the exhaust tubing is the same size, we don'tsee why the axle back and cat back tubing wouldn't bolt up. You may have to make some modifications depending on the exhausts you choose to bolt together.
I have Pypes Long Tubes with an o/r h pipe, how would this sound with that combo. Would there be a lot of drone? Would it be crazy loud?
The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust uses straight through, resonator style mufflers, and will be very loud with significant amounts of drone, especially when combined with an off road mid pipe.
The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust will use a muffler delete Axle-Back, whereas the Pypes Pype-Bomb Super System Cat-Back Exhaust will utilize a Pypes Pype Bomb Axle-Back in addition to the M80 mufflers. The Pype Bomb Axleback has resonators built into the tips, which will make the super system quieter than the mid muffler, but also give it a more unique tone.
The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust does not have a CARB number, so we cannot guarantee if this would be legal in your area. We suggest reaching out to your local authorities to see if this exhaust system would be legal in your area.
Compared to Pypes Pipe-Bomb Super System cat-back, this Pypes Mid-Muffler cat-back will be much quieter. If you follow the "Loudness" chart on the exhaust page, this Mid-Muffler cat-back will have mid range loudness compared to the Pipe-Bomb Super System which will have top range loudness.
The exhaust comes with all of the components required for installation, however, some 2007 models require to use of an exhaust hanger kit. We do carry the SR Performance Stainless Steel Exhaust Hanger Kit, Item 20021. http://www.americanmuscle.com/pypes-2005-stainless-hangers.html
Hello! The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust are designed to fit the factory exhaust, so it may require some modification to mount up perfectly.
This will mate up with the BBK X-pipe as the diameter of the pipes are both 2.5" however some custom modification may be needed for best fitment. Please consult with a trusted exhaust shop for further information.
No, 2006 V6's have a single exhaust. You would need a true dual exhaust kit to make this work.
The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust (05-10 GT) may be able to mate up with the X-Pipe that comes with the Ford Performance True Dual Exhaust (05-09 V6) item #24087 (www.americanmuscle.com/ford-v6dualexhaust-0509.html) because the piping of both are 2.5" however there may need to be custom modifications made to properly connect the pieces.
Yes, I have one installed on my 2006 V6 and I'm happy with them. I recommend this product.
If you already have the Pypes Mid-Muffler True Dual Exhaust with X-pipe, you don't need to purchase this kit. It is the exact same system only without the X-pipe. Only difference between the (2) is how they bolt up and the V6 system includes the required X-pipe for the conversion. Hope this helps!
