Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the Stainless Works three-inch Retro Chambered Catback Exhaust System with X-Pipe, available for your 2015 and up Fastback GT. You should be checking out the Stainless Works Three-inch Retro Chambered Catback with X-Pipe if you're a fan of the Stainless Works quality and would like to have a 304 grade material, if you wanna keep things around the $1,000 price point and you want a nice throaty sounding system with just a slight touch of rasp.
Now, Stainless Works is oftentimes a very popular choice when it comes to exhaust systems for Mustang owners for a few different reasons. Now, first things first, this is an exhaust after all, so let's quickly touch on the sound you can expect when using this system. And in my opinion, guys, I think the Three-inch X-Pipe version of the Retro Chambered Catback is gonna give prospective buyers the best of both worlds. You've got a low rumble at idle, or in the lower RPM range. But once you start hammering on the car, you do get a little bit more volume and a small and very livable amount of rasp. Now, breaking out the wake-the-neighbor scale, this thing is definitely gonna deliver, I'd say, a three, maybe even a four out of five on my one-to-five or one-to-wake-the-neighbor scale. It is loud, but there are definitely louder systems available.
My one small nitpick with this system, however, is the amount of drone I noticed when installed. Now, on our stick car it wasn't terrible. You could tell it was there. However, I have heard that automatic owners have endured a little bit more. Now, some people might wanna hear this system at all times, some people might be okay with that. However, there are gonna be other people that don't wanna hear the exhaust that much inside the cabin. With this installed, you will hear it at all times, both inside and outside of the car. Now, this particular sound is the result of both the chambered mufflers and resonators here, along with the included X-pipe. It's gonna result in a slightly higher pitch, just a little bit more rasp as well.
It is worth pointing out that you can buy this exact same system, but with an H-pipe in place of the X-pipe, if that's a sound you'd prefer. Just head over to the product page, check out the H-pipe sound clips and you can compare for yourself. This system does utilize three-inch mandrel bent tubing for the most part here, with the one exception being the two-and-a-half-inch neck down just to connect with the factory-style connection. You can grab this system, however, with their performance connect version, which is going to eliminate this neck down, make it full three-inch from tip-to-tip. But you do have to utilize this system with a set of Stainless Works long tube headers.
Now, as I mentioned earlier, the entire system has been constructed from premium 304 grade stainless steel, including the mandrel bent tubing, chambered mufflers and resonators, and the four-inch mirror polish conical wall tips. Now, that 304 grade stainless is going to be the benchmark when it comes to quality, and is a material you'd prefer to see with any stainless steel aftermarket Catback exhaust, because it will be the best at reducing corrosion. Far better than 409 grade stainless steel, or even aluminized steel. The tradeoff, however, is that it usually comes at a price. But Stainless Works does do a good job of keeping the price reasonable, despite the premium build.
Now, speaking of price, the Stainless Works option here for the Catback is gonna hover right around the $1,000 price point. But when you consider the quality of build and quality of materials, it really isn't all that bad. Now, other materials or other Catbacks on the site that do utilize full 304 grade stainless, including Cooks, Corsa, and even Borla [SP], they all do offer that stainless steel build, but they are gonna cost you a little bit more than the Stainless Works option here. Installation is definitely not gonna kill you on this one, guys. In fact, expect a relatively simple one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter here. It definitely will help with the buddy system removing that factory Catback as it is all one piece and can be a little tricky to move around by yourself.
After that's out of the way, just get to work installing the new Stainless Works system. I would recommend starting from front to back there, using a socket set or even an impact if you have one. We do call this one two hours on the site, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're making noise in a little less than that. As for my final thoughts on the Stainless Works, well, if you can put up with a little bit of interior drone, you're gonna be getting a great sounding, throaty system that will offer premium materials for a price that's very hard to beat given your other options.
