      Review & Installation Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com here with a review and install of the Borla ATAK Axle-Back Exhaust for the 2005 to 2009 GT Mustang. We're gonna be talking about a few different things with this exhaust today, but mainly we'll talk about the sound of the axle-back and the install. The install for this is easy. It's a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. There's no doubt in my mind that the Borla ATAK is gonna be for the GT owner out there that's looking for a high-quality system that's gonna deliver a ton of sound. The ATAK is by far the loudest and most aggressive muffler in the Borla lineup, which also includes the Touring and the S-Type. Borla says that ATAK stands for Acoustically-Tuned Applied Kinetics, which is basically Borla's fancy way of saying that this muffler will be loud, but it's not gonna get distorted or sloppy. So the main component in the system is really gonna be the ATAK mufflers, and that's the component that is really gonna set this system apart from all of the other options out there.Borla designed this muffler to be very similar to a race muffler and its less sound absorbing materials than Borla's other options. The course of the mufflers are custom-tuned for the GT Mustang, and they give it a very specific and aggressive sound. Borla says that it actually produces the highest available decibel level that's street legal. There isn't any drone with the system, which is actually a pretty awesome feature to have being that the system is as loud as it is. There also isn't any of that high-end distortion that you normally hear with a loud system. The system does have some raspiness to it, and a crackle or gurgle on decel occasionally. If you compare the ATAK system to the Touring and even the S-Type, in my opinion, it's more of a higher pitched tone. I'd say that the Borla S-Type muffler produces a slightly deeper tone. Now, with all that being said, I am gonna give this a four out of five on the loudness scale, one being a very quiet system, and a five being a very loud system. Keep in mind that if you ever change your headers or your mid-pipe down the road, this could open up even more noise for you. So if your biggest deciding factor when you're shopping for an axle-back is loud, I'd say that the ATAK from Borla is probably gonna be one of the top choices here at AM. If you aren't looking for that loud, then Borla does have those other options that I mentioned already. When it comes to materials, you're looking at 2-3/4-inch manual-bent stainless steel tubing. The ATAK mufflers are Borla's race-type mufflers, which are straight-through mufflers, and this system has 4-inch prune stainless steel tips with the Borla logo embossed on them.As far as price, you can expect to pay between $500 and $600 for this axle-back. Like I mentioned earlier, this is one of the top of the line options as far as tune, sound, materials, and fitment, so it is gonna be on the more expensive side. Luckily, if this one's out of your budget, then there are a ton of other axle-backs for the Mustang that you can check out. This is a direct bolt-on item, so you're looking at a very easy install. I'm gonna call this a one out of three wrenches on the scale when you look at difficulty. Overall, you're looking at about one hour to get this all done. A lift would certainly make things easier for you here, but the job can be done on jack stands as well if you don't have access to one. This axle-back very simply folds right up into the stock location, so you won't have to cut or modify anything. Just looking at dropping your old axle-back and the new axle-back will come with new clamps for you, so you don't have to worry about that. When you're going to install your new setup, it will probably be easiest to leave everything loose until you have it all lined up, and then tighten it down.Wrapping things up here with the Borla ATAK Axle-Back, this is a loud system, the loudest from Borla, and it doesn't hav

        Looks and sounds awesome !

I loved the sound of my stock 2006 mustang gt, but after 12 years of same quiet sound level, I was ready for a change. These axlebacks will transform your mustang into sounding like a real muscle car. I guarantee you will have a big smile on your face from start up to driving it around. This is also my wife's car and she loves the sound. As far as the install goes, the only issue you might have is getting the old mufflers off and getting the new ones to fit snug enough on the axle back exhaust pipe. I had one get loose after driving a few miles. This is common when you hook up a new exhaust to the old rusty exterior part of the exhaust. My mechanic applied high temperature silicone sealant to make the fit more snug. Don't try to over torque the clamps. No problems after the sealant was applied. The exhaust is perfect even for a daily driver. No drone. It can be quiet at low rpm's and loud enough at higher rpm's to get peoples attention.

        5 2007 GT - RobertD

        Sounds and looks awesome!

After weeks of reading reviews and listening to sound bytes I decided to purchase this system. I’m really glad I did because I love the way they sound. I also installed a Magnaflo catted H pipe at the same time and wow is all I can say. It has a nice low rumble at idle and gets loud when you get on it. Until some of the thrill wears off I turn the radio off and roll the windows down so I can relish in the sound. I’m also finding any excuse to drive my car now lol. I ended up welding the system instead of using the clamps and I didn’t need the new hangers. It took 7 hours to install the h pipe and the borla only because I ran into a few issues, broke a stud off in the manifold, had a bad welding tip then ran out of argon gas but it was worth the effort!! I would highly recommend this product!

        Exactly what your Mustang needs.

I decided to cough up $550 for these expecting them to be the best. They certainly did not disappoint, perfectly balanced tone for cruising speeds and idling, but wakes up when you give it some gas. I don’t normally write reviews on this site, but given how worth it it was for me to choose the Borla ATAK over others,I know they will speak for themselves

        Nice aggressive growl!

Nice aggressive growl over stock. Was undecided between the S Type and ATAK, but super glad I chose the S Type. Hear that the ATAK was a bit more of a raspy tone whereas the S Type is a deeper tone. I'm stock until axle back, and enjoy the tone. Quiet when off the throttle, but get on it and it's music to my ears! Didn't want to get anything too obnoxious in sound as my wife may be driving our 07 GT vert also. Would recommend to anyone looking for a deep aggressive tone. Borla is awesome! AM was awesome as well with the fast and free shipping. Thanks

On a scale of 1 to 10 how loud are these compared to straight pipe (with orx) would it be quieter or would it sound basically the same

      • The Borla ATAK Axle-Back Exhaust will be a very loud, aggressive axle back, however these will not approach the levels of a true "straight pipe" muffler delete and will offer a more mellow tone than straight pipes, especially with the cats in place.

I’ve seen some sites sell a BORLA ATAK muffler that looks similar to standard chambered mufflers and are typically around $100 cheaper. What’s the difference between these bullett style atak mufflers and the chambered style atak mufflers? Thank You

Would these be louder then a muffler delete? I have a after the car x pipe but other then that still have stock cats, would it be louder then my muffler deletes?

      • These would not be louder than a muffler delete axle back.
