Review & Install Video

Hey everybody, I'm Justin with, and this is my detailed review and dyno test of the VMP X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner, loaded with 3 custom VMP tunes, available for your 2011 through 2014 Mustang GT. So the VMP tunes are definitely going to be more of a premium tuning option available here at AM, with a focus on refined drivability. That's going to be the big separating factor here, guys. Now, VMP tunes are really going to shine with the more heavily modded setups, so your full bolt-on cars, nitrous applications, forced induction, things like that, where VMP has really earned their reputation in the Mustang community. That being said, this is still going to be an awesome option for stock to lightly modded setups, for guys at home who might be more familiar with the VMP name, and doesn't mind spending a few bucks more compared to some other tuning options here on the site. Now before I start breaking down what separates the VMP tunes from some of your other options here on the site, along with breaking down some of the features with the X4 device, let's get to the thing you guys all want to see, and that is the dyno numbers. Now we already grabbed our baseline run using our 2011 automatic GT behind me earlier today, so we reran the car with the 93 Octane VMP tune uploaded, and here are the results. Baseline run using our 2011 automatic GT gave us 342 horsepower and 323 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels. With the 93 Octane VMP tune uploaded, the car is now making 354 horsepower and 350 pound feet of torque. That's good for a peak gain of 12 horsepower over those baseline numbers, and gains of as much as 24 horsepower and 39 pound feet of torque under the curve. Breaking down these VMP numbers a little further here guys, here's what you need to keep in mind. Yes, this is an automatic car, so these numbers might seem a little lower than usual, stick cars will definitely see higher numbers, but overall the car picked up a ton of horsepower and a ton of torque down low, basically between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm, you're seeing huge gains underneath the curve, and that's going to be your main operating range when it comes to driving the car everyday, red light to red light, that's the power increase you're really going to feel. Now of course you did pick up a little bit up top as well, but again, those big gains are down low, and that's pretty solid overall. So now that you know a little bit more about the numbers, let's talk about the VMP tune in depth. So let's quickly address why you might want to upgrade your tune in the first place. Now the factory calibration in the '11 to '14 cars are definitely geared toward the masses, with comfort and fuel economy often times taking precedent over power. So when owners start looking for a little bit more power, an aftermarket or custom tune is definitely a great place to start. As we saw in our dyno jet, the car, no other mods changed, picked up a ton of power and torque, with the tune by itself, in addition to totally transforming how the car behaved. You're going to see improved throttle response, increased low-end torque, snappier shifts with our automatic, and improved drivability. And as the modding bug really starts to set in, as it often times does with a lot of us, that aftermarket or custom tune becomes essential, especially as those more involved modifications start finding their way onto your car. This includes those long-tube headers, larger cold-air intakes, aftermarket intake manifolds, nitrous applications again, or forced induction, any of these things, an aftermarket tune is a must. So why is the VMP tune going to be a more premium option here on the site? Well they have been around in the tuning industry for quite some time, and over that time they've of course really developed their power, as we witnessed with our dyno results, but they've also spent a really good amount of time nailing their drivability, and that's going to be the big separating factor when choosing a VMP tune over maybe some of the other options here on the site. Now very smooth throttle response, no surging, no idling issues, no stalling, things like that. Basically driving around town, the car's going to offer a great driving experience, no matter what your modifications. Now with our automatic equipped car, the shifts again were firm, they were sporty, without any drama whatsoever. You are going to be receiving three custom tunes written directly by VMP, ordered through us here at, a low, medium, and high octane tune, depending on what kind of fuel you guys have available in your area. Now that low octane tune's going to deliver some additional benefits over your factory calibration, namely a little bit more power, some improved drivability, but it's not going to be as aggressive as the 93 octane or high octane tune, because that will typically utilize a little bit more ignition timing and some other things to deliver those bigger gains. And if you should need it, VMP will offer one data log revision if necessary. Since the VMP tunes are a slightly more high-end option, expect to spend a little bit more than some of your other options here on the site, for your GT. Again, they do offer the E85, nitrous, and forced induction tuning, and that's going to add a little bit more to the final price tag. Now those tunes do come emailed to you for easy upload onto your X4 Power Flash Tuner, which does have some nice features on its own. Some of the biggies with the X4 Tuner include a nice bright, full-color LCD screen, which is going to be very easy to see, it can data log with a simple touch of a button, it's going to be able to read and display up to eight different values from your car's ECU at any time. This includes intake air temperature, air/fuel ratio, RPM, cooling temperature, things like that. It can store up to 10 tunes at one time, and it can read and clear those diagnostic trouble codes. And if for whatever reason, you ever wanted to return your car back to stock, the X4 can easily handle that for you with a simple touch of a button. Installing or uploading your custom VMP tune will definitely be one of the easier mods you'll ever tackle with your S197, so for that I'll call it an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter, and that's being a little generous. Now you're first going to want to locate your car's OBD II port, which on the S197 is located on the lower left-hand portion of the dash. Plug the X4 tuner in, and wait for it to power on. At that point, simply navigate the menu to the program vehicle tab, select a tune you wish to upload, and then follow the directions from there, and you should be good to go in roughly 20 to 30 minutes, from start to finish. Having a chance to drive the VMP tuned 2011 GT, I can safely say they've done their homework in regards to drivability, and the power gains are certainly there, like I've already shown you with the dyno results. So even though you are spending a little bit more for the VMP option right up front, you're getting a proven product with an established name that can handle

Increases Horse Power and Torque. From the factory, Ford programs their vehicles to cater to the needs of the daily driver, not the performance enthusiast who adds aftermarket modifications in search of more power. Great deal and great tune

Great tune from CAMP and customer service support has been great. Having to add hood pins because at 160mph, still accelerating in only 5th gear, my hood almost lifted off. Highly recommend this package.

    Great product and support!

Everything so far about this partnership has been exactly what I was looking for. Bama and AM working with an already established tune shop like VMP is very exciting. VMP/Bama/AM has been great with this transition and provided me with an awesome tune. They had no trouble with the tune for my Ford Performance Whipple supercharged 2011 5.0. Car pulls hard and idles very smooth. I do not have any dyno numbers yet but the seat of my pants feels the difference! Old tune would have some trouble time to time at idle and that has been completely eliminated. Hoping to get some data logs to them soon and see what they think but I doubt they need to tweak anything. Very cool that they offer the data log sessions with this option as well. No doubt in my mind the turn around with the data logs will be just as fast as the initial turnaround of the tunes. Basically unless you own a dyno and are an expert tuner you are not going to get a better set of tunes for a better price! Thanks guys!
