- How to Install an SCT SF3/X3 Tuner on your 1996-2012 Mustang
$399.00 (each)FREE Shipping
Hey, guys. Adam here with americanmuscle.com. And today, we're taking a closer look at, installing and of course dyno testing the Bama X4 SF4 Power Flash Tuner from SCT, available with two custom tunes fitting all '15 to '17 Mustang GTs. Now before we break down all the details of the X4 itself and the tunes, what do you say we head over to the dyno, take a look at our dyno graph? Now, guys, we strapped our '15 GT down to the dyno, 93 octane in the tank, completely bone stock otherwise, ran a baseline run, we walked away with 382 horsepower, 359 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. We then, of course, uploaded the 93 race tune from Bama, walked away with 403 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels, that's good for peak gains, 21 horsepower and 24 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. Those numbers right there are pretty good right off the bat but curve gains are even more impressive. Under the curve, we're seeing gains as much as 32 horsepower and 39 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. The biggest torque curve is going to be right at the low end there which is really gonna make such a huge difference on the road higher end of the RPM band, we're seeing really good horsepower gains, but all across the RPM band, really impressive numbers altogether. Now what do you say we break down the features of the X4 here? Now the X4 from Bama comes with those two tunes, 87 octane and the 93 race from Bama, 87 is gonna be a good choice for guys to upload on their daily driver or their weekend warrior, just looking for something a little extra for their daily commute just to make things a little bit more interesting without having to grab 93 pump gas. But if you're really looking to maximize performance as you just saw on the dyno, the 93 tune is gonna be the way to go. The 93 tune is taking a number of other parameters into consideration including air-fuel ratio, timing, spark, and a number of other parameters to really maximize your vehicle's performance and any other mods on it. This is great for stock, modified or even heavily modified Mustangs. Now in addition to those tunes themselves, there's a number of other features to look at. The X4 device does come with a DTC code reader feature built-in, so the diagnostic trouble code being your check engine light, you no longer need a separate dongle or no need to go to AutoZone to get them to read the code. Plug this guy into your OBD2, read the code, get a brief description and you can clear it right on the X4. There's also the gauges and data log screen as well, you can monitor live engine vitals all on the screen at once and you can change them up, things like air-fuel ratio, coolant temp, air intake temp, sensors. You can monitor so many options and cater it to your preference. 'd recommend picking up the windshield mount from SCT sold separately just to mount it up on the windshield and keep it within arm's reach and within eyesight of the driver seat at all times, but of course not necessary. Now data logging is another thing to keep in mind as well, anytime you think you might want a revision from Bama, you can run a data log, record it, send it over to Bama via email and they can take a look and tell you what needs to be changed, if anything, so that's a good feature to have right there as well. Keeps an open line of communication to your tuner. Now with that in mind, anytime pick up a Bama tune and a corresponding device like the X4 or the Rev-X for example, you're automatically enrolled in the Bama Free Tunes For Life Program. What that essentially means is for the lifetime you have that tuner and your vehicle paired, you get free revisions from Bama at any time. That means if you add some of those bolt-on power adders which let's be honest, we all do all the time forever, it's just how it works, things like cold air intake, long tube headers, cat-back exhaust, hit up Bama, they'll revise your tune to include your new power adder or even if you remove anything, they can make your tune, maximize your vehicle's performance given what you put on. So that's a huge value included in this package. The whole thing comes in right around 400 bucks. Install is gonna get one out of three wrenches on our difficultly meter. Anybody can tackle this in the driveway at home with about 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish. I'm gonna show you every single step of the process. Keep in mind I'm gonna walk you through that process inside of our '18 EcoBoost, but know the process for uploading the tune and all of the features on your X4 are the exact same for your '15 to '17 GT, we're just using our '18 as that guinea pig in the car. So what do you say we head over there and show you that clip?Guys, first step here, grab the harness include in the kit, you're gonna plug in this side to the OBD2 port located on the left side under your driver side dashboard. Once that's is plugged in, take the other side, pop it into the slot on the top of your X4 and we're good to get started. All right, from the main menu, I'm gonna take you guys through the process of tuning your vehicle. So select PROGRAM VEHICLE vehicle from that main menu, hit CONTINUE on the STREET NOTICE, put your key in the on position, don't start your engine and press CONTINUE.Now it'll give you a bunch of different options to actually modify any tune you select. We're gonna go with 93 RACE but select the one that you want to flash now. At this point, it will move forward asking you if you want to make any additional changes, there's a bunch of menus relating to that, so make the changes you want. We're gonna keep our file pretty much the same that it comes with from Bama. All right, so you want to change anything you see on this menu and hit APPROVE. Continue to SPECIAL OPTIONS including tire size, things like that. So did you change your tire size? We did not. Don't want to change gear ratio and no on the TPMS settings. Confirm that it'll disable your pre-loaded tune to move forward. All right. Key in the on position, if you haven't done so already and it'll save your stock tune to the device and then begin to flash, it'll load 0 to 100 a couple of times. Just let it do its thing, don't unplug it and don't turn the vehicle off unless it directs you to. All right, at this point it lets us know the download is complete, can select DONE and you're good to go.Before we disconnect, I want to take you through some of the other features of the X4. So if you go under PROGRAM VEHICLE, GAUGES/DATALOG is your next selection. You want to make sure the key is on before you move any forward. What this'll do is allow you to monitor live engine vitals on the fly at any time as long as your device is plugged in. Now it's more of a gauge pod, but there's multiple pods, multiple gauges. As you can see on the screen we have two, they're both the same at the moment but they are customizable. Now if you go to the right, you can DATALOG, can record a datalog, SELECT DATALOG FILE, SELECT GAUGE LAYOUT. I'm gonna change that gauge layout to something we can monitor three pieces of information with. Now we have BOOST IN PSI, CONTROL MODULE VOLTAGE and COOLANT TEMP. You can change those, like I said. So in the EcoBoost, you might want a monitor boost, CONTROL MODULE VOLTAGE, COOLANT TEMP, those are all customizable. If I want to change COOLANT TEMP to INTAKE AIR TEMP, we can hit APPROVE on that and it changes that gauge. You can monitor up to eight at a time. If you want to select the gauge layout that monitors eight this is the max. Now it's really useful for guys who want to take care of that information on the fly and again you can record datalogs, send that to your tuner, make revisions, so on and so forth. Now if you hit STOP DATALOG, it takes you back to the main menu.Under that, VEHICLE FUNCTIONS, READ DTC CODES, CLEAR DTC CODES and SPECIAL FUNCTIONS. Now DTC being diagnostic trouble code. So if your check engine light comes on, plug this device in, read the code, get the description and then you can clear it once it's taken care of, no need to pick up any additional device. SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, most people won't touch. CAM relearn, CAM reset, those we'll leave be for now, most people aren't gonna have to worry about that.VEHICLE INFO. This is useful if you're requesting a new tune, if you need access to your VIN number, your ECU strategy code, that's gonna be on hand. DEVICE INFO, similar but for your X4 you'll have the part number, serial number, the firmware and software version, how many unlocks you have, if your status is married, so on and so forth. And then finally DEVICE SETTINGS. You can CHECK FOR UPDATES both plugged in or via Wi-Fi, which I think is very useful. Wi-Fi, if you're in range of the Wi-Fi network, you can connect that to do everything wirelessly. The only big difference here between this and the newer Rev-X is there are no cloud capabilities, so everything is done on the computer as far as downloading tunes. But if you're not too worried about that wireless aspect of it, the X4 is still a really good device. The rest of the settings are pretty much simple for any handheld, BRIGHTNESS, ORIENTATION, you can change to landscape, you can change the THEME from RED to BLUE, you can change it to DARK. There's a number of settings there. There's also AUDIO, so every time you click a button, there's a little beep, you can turn that off here and that way you don't have to worry about that sound. Finally, STARTUP FUNCTION I think is very useful for guys who are always going to want to monitor those gauges that we looked at. The gauges and datalog screen, you can select your startup to go immediately to the gauges screen. So if you have this constantly plugged into your OBD2 and you have it mounted on the windshield, this might be a good thing to take advantage of. Finally, FACTORY RESET. We hit EXIT back to the main menu and that's your X4. Well, guys, that's gonna wrap up my review, install and dyno test of the Bama X4 SF4 Power Flash Tuner from SCT, with two custom tunes for the '15 to '17 GT. You can get your entire kit right here at americanmuscle.com.

Bama V2 Custom Tunes. When you order a SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner by SCT, you aren't just getting a tuner. You're getting the tuner and two Dyno-tested custom V2 Tunes that are written specifically for your Mustang and your particular modifications by Bama Performance. You even get your choice of octane level. Bama includes datalog reviews to ensure your vehicle is fully optimized. Bama offers your choice of two different tunes including Performance or Race.
Performance V2 (87-93 Octane) - The Performance Tune offers a seamless blend of power, performance and drive-ability. Improving the overall driving experience of your Mustang, the Bama Performance Tune improves vehicle acceleration, increases power throughout the entire RPM and improves throttle response with revised timing, fuel and VCT maps. This tune is suggested for the aggressive daily driver that is looking for more "get up and go."
Race V2 (91-93 Octane, E85, Race Fuel) - The Race Tune is designed for maximum performance and ensures the largest increase in vehicle performance. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory as timing, VCT, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. This file is designed for "Race Use Only."
Technical Note About Fuel. Use of E85 will require larger fuel injectors such as Injector Dynamics ID1300 or Ford Racing 47lb/hr Injectors. Unleaded race fuel can also be used, but Stoichiometric points must be supplied.
Compact Design. The SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner measures in at 2.7-inch wide X 5.5-inch tall making it much smaller than the original SF3/X3 for easy storage in your center console or glove box. The cord is detachable and there is no battery or power supply needed. It uses the power from your vehicle's diagnostic port or computers USB connection.
Full Color Display. The SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner features a full color 2-3/4-inch diagonal LCD screen with user adjustable portrait or landscape modes. The SF4/X4 also has a convenient power saving auto dim feature.
Built-in WiFi. The SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner is now WiFi-capable meaning you will no longer have to plug it into your PC/Windows computer to receive the latest SCT firmware updates. Once setup with your Wi-Fi password, the X4 will download the latest firmware updates via the internet.
Data Logging and Monitoring. With a full color LCD display, the SCT SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner makes it easy to read the Built-In Data Logging and/or the Real Time Data, so you can view popular sensor data such as EGT, Air/Fuel Ratio or any other 0-5 Volt source.
Diagnostics Tool. The SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner can also be used as a diagnostic code reader. Save yourself hundreds of dollars each year by reading and clearing your own Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) rather than paying a dealer to do the same. It's as easy as a few simple steps.
Easy to Load; Easy to Restore. When you load your custom tune on the vehicle, the tuner automatically stores your vehicle's factory settings. To return the vehicle to its factory settings, just plug the tuner back in, select the option to restore the factory settings, and you're done. This is ideal for visiting dealerships for warranty work.
Not CARB Certified. The SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner is not CARB certified, therefore it is not legal for use in California or any other state adopting California emission standards. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only.
Application. This Bama SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner by SCT with 2 Custom V2 Tune Files by Bama Performance is specifically designed to fit all 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the 4V DOHC 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, including automatic and manual transmission models that are stock or running basic bolt-on modifications such as a Cold Air Intake, Throttle Body and/or Full Exhaust System.
**Please Note: The SCT SF4/X4 Power Flash Tuner ships blank from AmericanMuscle, the custom tune files will be emailed directly to the end user within 2-3 business days from Bama Performance. Heavily modified cars are not tunable with a mail order tune. Click for restrictions. Membership in the Tunes for Life program is valid for as long as you own the car that was originally tuned and is non-transferrable.

91 and 1o1 tune
talked to Justin over the tuning department, felt super confident with the info he gave me and i went ahead and ordered the tuner. bama doesnt offer a nitrous tune any more, but what is available on the tuner, when you load the tune, is the ability to change your timing at WOT, making it possible for you to adjust BAMA's tune to add nitrous. unfortunately, BAMA will not walk you through any of the process, or really explain whether or not this is indeed the function of this option on the start up screen. Also, it is not very clearly explained how you can maintain your stock tune, as when you go to load a tune it will say: stock 5.0 tune 91pump 101race the stock 5.0 tune however is simply the last tune taken out of the car (per Bama) so if you load your 91 tune, then load your 101 tune, then try to load the "stock" tune, it will be loading the 91 tune, not a factory tune. for the tune. on the stock tune the car would break traction on 1 to 2 shift, but not 2 to 3. it ran a 9.80 1/8th mile on street tires, little prep track, and a 3000rpm launch. after the tune the car will certainly break traction 1 to 2, and 2 to 3. same tires, same track, same launching RPM the car ran an 8.90. granted, the tune included accounting for the CAI, the GT350 throttle body, spacer, and exhaust. Justin required that i give him a specific race fuel for the 101 tune (im not certain why, other than maybe the pre canned tunes were RandD'd with specific fuels) but i told him VP's c10 as it is the most common fuel i can get, however, i plan on running ms109 as well. I have not tested out the 101 tune yet, but plan to in the coming weeks. all in all, if you put a CAI or exhaust or upgrade to a larger throttle body, i would recommend this.Helpful (1)

My only complaint which would be related to any tuner to be honest, would be the downloading of the files. My recommendation is to go live with them and allow them to temporarily remote access your computer so no mistakes are made. I had some trouble with this since they clearly state there's a small issue with Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. They do provide the steps, links and information but it can become a bit overwhelming. With remote access Vincent quickly resolved and restored everything necessary to get the tuner going and ready to plug and load on my GT. Took him less than 5 minutes, well worth the wait on hold.Helpful (1)

Very happy with this tuner and tunes. Took a bone stock mustang, threw a JLT CAI and this tuner on it and I can't believe the difference it made. Well worth the investment. NOTE: The description says it will come pre-loaded with tunes - it will not, the tunes will come in an email. The toughest part about this tuner was downloading the updates and downloading the tunes and not getting an error code (#110A1) when trying to flash the car. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY - it took me 3 attempts to finally get it. Make sure the updates are applied to the tuner before you download the tunes.Helpful (4)

Can’t Download Email Custom Tunes
Can’t Download Email Custom Tunes. My tuner does not see the custom tunes on my Windows 10 PC. Right now until help answers me, it’s a useless piece of expensive equipment. I can’t install my cold air intake until this is resolved. Extremely disappointed!!!!!!!Helpful (0)
From what I understand, this tuner goes not come with the ghost cam programming. How do I get the ghost cam tune and how much does it cost? Also, can the ghost cam tune damage the variable timing components?
The Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner is capable of supporting a ghost cam tune, which can be requested through BAMA when submitting your tune information. We recommend consulting with BAMA to ensure your Mustang is capable of supporting a ghost cam tune. This will not cause damage to any valve train components, and is covered by the free tunes for life.
I have a 2017 GT with AirAid intake and Borla exhaust. I see in questions that the Bama X4/SF4 comes with one tune. Is that tune for a stock GT? Do I need to get the tune when I buy at first to match up with what I have in the car now? Or is that tune ok to use right out of the box? Or order it first with a new tune to match to what I have already?
When you order the tuner, Bama will send you a form with a few questions in regards to the modifications you have done on your car. You will supply them with the needed information so that they can create the custom tunes for your vehicle. The tuner will come with the custom tunes on it.
Does it leave a signature on the computer and does it void the warranty
The Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner can be traced by Ford through their PCM Scanner. While the dealer may notice the Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner has been installed, you are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.Magnuson - Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302) states that legally, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty on a vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can definitively prove that the aftermarket part caused or contributed to the failure in the vehicle.
Would this be able to tune a gt350 intake manifold with an 87mm throttle body and JLT intake?
The Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner can tune a vehicle with all those modifications.
I live in CA, will the tuner store my stock tune so I can switch back to stock tune if I need to have my car smog checked?
The Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner will allow you to save the stock tune on the tuner. So if you ever need to go back to the stock tune, you have the ability to do so.
Most dealerships will void the warranty with tuners yes.
Since the custom tunes only change the normal driving setting, there would not be an advantage to changing the vehicle into track mode. When uploading a new tune, we highly recommend driving the vehicle through a full drive cycle to the computer to adjust to the tune. A drive cycle is typically 70 miles.
Bama Performance would not be able to tune for aftermarket supercharger or turbo applications. They would not be able to tune your application. You will want to take a look at the VMP tuner these will work with your set up. http://www.americanmuscle.com/vmp-sct-x4-tuner-3-tunes-sc-1516gt.html
Hi, A tune update is usually required when installing a CAI intake on a 15+ Mustang, to get a tune update emailed to you, you will need to order a Bama Tune File (Free Tunes for Life Members Only) Item# 38051 either over the phone or on the website and fill out a new tune sheet. Here is the link http://www.americanmuscle.com/free-sct-custom-tune.html
The Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner would work with 15-17 Mustang GTs. This tuner would come preloaded with the first custom tune. Any retunes in the future would need to be downloaded from a PC to the device.
Once the tuner is prchased, your modifications would be sent to Bama for the tune to be made. Yes, this device can tune the vehicle if returned to stock.
Yes, this Bama Performance tuner includes a Tunes For Life membership.
Bama can indeed tune for this application.
